First Indoor 200-250W CFL With Auto Dark Devils

Nice to have you aboard Stupidface!

Day 42

I've got a few new toys over the last few days. Grabbed myself a proper Bluelab soil ph pen.. as i intend to do soil grows for the foreseeable future. It also works in coco, just stick the pen in the media and get a direct reading! (As well as water testing)

Also grabbed some Geo Pots to try out for my GG Allin's. Unfortunately i only had enough soil for one pot, so the other is awaiting transplant. Interestingly, the transplanted GG has suffered no shock at all and has surpassed it's sister in 24 hours.

I also have a new 85w tube heater, which i've mounted at the back of the tent. It wont be required for a month or two, but i wanted to get it sorted.

I also picked up some CalMag and some Seasol (Poor mans Rhizotonic. I read some reports and it seems like a negligible difference at 1/10th of the price). I will start a new journal once this one is finished for the GG's so people don't come looking for a CFL grow and see i'm using an LED.

Lefty and Righty are starting to fatten up nicely. They are finally getting some girth to the buds. I have noticed some slightly burnt tips, which don't seem to be exclusive of the top leaves. I thought it was light burn, but i'm not so sure. Some are turned up, some down. Very crispy and fall apart if you grip them.. however it is limited to only the very tips. From the research i've done it looks more like a nute burn... but i was dosing so lightly until the last couple of feeds it's hard for me to believe it.
I'm keeping the light at 115w for now, as the higher buds appear to be fuller and fatter. I'm thinking the full 135w might be too much though..

Lefty got 2L of food tonight. I added 2ml of CalMag and dropped the Bio Flores down to 5ml as per the schedule. I'm thinking one or two feeds left before i stop and start flushing? Righty is still a bit damp so i wont feed for another day or two. I'm hoping my Canna Bio Bloom arrives by then, but at this stage I've probably missed out on it being of any use.

I feel i've learned a lot in this grow, and hope to improve with the next. I'm already looking at other peoples amazing grows (Looking at you Stupidface and Troy01) and feel I've got such a small harvest and could've done better. But.. I have to keep reminding myself it's only the first run.

Edit: So after some more research im wondering if the tip burn could be heat stress? Tent was at 35 celcius when i got home today. Chucked some ice packs in there and got it down to 30 as quick as i could.

Here's some happy snaps for tonight:

A good ph pen is a great purchase. I had problems on my last grow because of a cheap pen and has been much smoother this run with a better meter. What have you been aiming for when ph-ing your feedings?

The burnt tips likely started from nute burn but the heat is probably making it worse. It's also possible that unused nutes have built up in the soil so even though you are feeding light it's environment may still be too hot. At least you'll get through the first grow with some nice smoke and lots more knowledge to rock the next one.

Funny you should ask about the ph.

I only bought ph-down as my tap water is 8.2. I've been bringing it down to 6.5 or so, then adding nutes as the organic nutes say you generally don't need to adjust unless you have hard water above 7.5.

Yesterday i had some rested water that i Ph'd to 6.8 then added Bio Flores and CalMag to. I tested it and it was like 4.7. I didn't have any ph-up so i tipped it out, grabbed some fresh filtered water from my house (particle and carbon, i haven't used this for the plants before but wanted to remove the chlorine) and tested it raw... 8.2
So i added cal mag.... 7.6
Then i added Bio Flores.... 5.5

So the recommendation of adjusting if the water is above 7.5 is confusing as it still dropped like crazy with no prior adjustment. Should i be adjusting after to bring it up? I thought that the soil basically took care of this for you within reason.

Thanks for the thoughts regarding nute build up. Should i maybe just give Righty a flush with fresh water today instead of a feed? It would only be the second time in their life cycle they'd have plain water since i started feeding. Could be a good side by side to see if it really was the problem.

I use a different brand of nutes so what i do may be wrong for what you are using, but i always ph after adding the nutes. Around 6.4-6.6 in veg and 6.8-7.0 in flower. I only really worry about the ph i'm putting in, and not so much what the ph is in my soil. My first grow i only bought ph down but the bloom nutes tend to drop the ph a lot and it caused me issues in my last grow.

Also i have been alternating between feeding and just water each time they get a drink, might be worth a try unless your nutes specifically say to feed every time. As far as flushing now, i guess it depends how much longer til you plan on chopping. You will want to do a flush around a week before you chop, so if you are harvesting in the next 2-3 weeks you could wait for that. If they are going longer than that it might be worth a flush.

Thanks for that. Yep i have around 2-3 weeks left according to the expected harvest date, so i might light feed and then start with clean water next. (When you say "flush" and "plain water" do you use the terms interchangeably? Or do you mean running lots of water through for a"flush" and "plain water" is just a regular watering without additives?)

Ill also take your advice and do plain water every second feed for the GG's, unless they look hungry. Cheers!

It looks like they have a lot of growing left in them. They're hungry, feed them my friend.

Day 46

Had to move indoors for a few days as we just had a heatwave. Id fed Righty Friday afternoon and wasn't happy with how it was progressing. By last night, i thought it had gotten worse and the burning was spreading. I flushed 20l of water through her and ph'ed to 6.5 and then gave 1/3 strength Bio Flores to get through. Hopefully this get her across the line. The runoff was very dark for a good 10 litres, so I'm guessing it was over nute.

Lefty is looking great apart from burnt tips. I've noticed the undergrowth is very dark green, so I've stopped feeding and just gave fresh water. It was a toss up to flush or not but ill do it next watering i think. She is a good drinker so she should be ready in 4 days or so.

The GG's are doing well, with one clearly bigger than the other. I intend to top or fim soon, i haven't decided which yet.

Looking great but they sure are hungry. Yellows and purples, save that for the last two!

I think you may be right about Righty, but she is too weak to take heavy feedings. Very slow drinker and everything i do seems to upset her, so she's riding it out.

Lefty is actually a very good color despite the pics. Good purple color on the buds and undergrowth is crazy dark green almost blue, and tips are burning so i don't think she needs anymore food until harvest.

But i am kinda winging it all at the moment, and trying to take it all in so next grow should be better.

Thanks mate! They are fattening up nicely now. Flushing Righty was the correct decision as the burning and colour loss has stopped, so I'm stoked! Lefty is exciting me, lovely colours.

The GG's got FIMed yesterday, will update in the next day or two the result.

Soaking another Dark Devil now to join the GG's and should all finish roughly the same time.

Well i noticed something strange last night when checking the girls.

Righty (the more sickly of the two) has quite an obnoxious and unpleasant smell from the buds. I can't see any mould and there is a fan constantly blowing on it, plus the buds are not particularly thick.

Lefty smells totally different and sweet.

Should i be worried or could this just be different phenotypes? I pinched a tiny bud of the bottom and smoked it, and it definitely tastes like it smells.

Yea unfortunately I've got them in the same tent as the vegging plants, so humidity has been fluctuating a bit. We just had 4 days of heavy rain which also pushed the humidity up a bit. I've tried to combat by using the heater where i can and have the fan blowing directly on the flowering plants and also exhaust on full. Buds got a tiny light sprinkle of rain when i took them outside to check the true color, but I'm talking less than a few mls. Humidity says 50% but went up today when i watered the GG's, however the meter is also right above them so not an accurate reading.

If anything though, the healthy looking plant is so much denser so i would think it would develop mould problems way before the other would.

Another thing to note is the bad smelling plant stays very wet for a long time. I flushed 6 days ago, and it still feels quite heavy. Lefty on the other hand, is almost bone dry and ready for a watering.

They are in darkness at the moment so once lights on kicks in (2.5 hours) ill go and take a photo and break one open.
