Final Decision : Volksgarden 600w vs. CAP E&G 1kw : Start to Finish in ~1 week

To be clear I'm talking about the vertical grow coliseum and your reference to Heath. He signed up here but hasn't posted much ;)

Wizewizo is doing some interesting vertical work with the spinner.

Yeah I'm watching to see his work on here. I was talking about ANYONE who pulls that off will make me want to retire. I like to just throw a wrench into the mix for wheel. I know reading this makes him think about one. LOL..Just mess'n w/ you Wheel. I like Wizewizo's work. I've done something like that myself in the past. Dont get me wrong, their alot of work and pull off fantastic yeilds BIG UPS TO HIM!! But Heaths' is just plain sick.(not trying to kiss his a*s or anything) Its just I honestly hope he will post a journal here at some point, along with some of his breeding info. Definetly a valuable member.

Sympathies.

Guess if you can do a close-up of a fan leaf and the trichomes are so thick between the fingers that it looks like it's growing shiny webbed feet... All is not without hope.

:thumb:

thanks bro, it's definitely a great smoke. . . now i just want more. ;)

I'd love to see a coliseum grow here ;)

2 g/watt possible
Sorry to hear the wheel is going into mothballs. I've enjoyed the shows ;)

You've got some serious sticky there on the Eng, best wishes for a strong count :surf:

thanks Soniq, I may not have done a great job with it, but i think i did a great service to those who want to see it in action. will it work? yes. Can it work great? yes. . . but are you at the very top of your game? do you make a mistake here or there? can you dial everything in just so? if not, she can be a real bitch.

Mark my words, my next journal will top 1g/w. :goodluck: I'll leave the 2+g/w to heath. lol. anything over 1 is gravy baby.

tiered grow, but not really coliseum style exactly. . . more like a hybrid. . . 1/2 Ebb n Gro on the ground, 1/2 Aero on the wall. 1kw. . . I need over 2.2 lbs from the 4x8. . . much more than double anything i've ever done in the past. . . but this grow was the first time I've ever run anything larger than 600 w. . . and that was in the wheel. . . 400 w is the biggest light I ever used outside of the wheel till this very grow. so still some growing pains, but the EnG is so useable, it wont have as hard a learning curve as the wheel for sure. plus I am familiar with ebb n flow in general and with hydroton.

Couldnt agree with you more. 2g/watt..Wheel I'm going to retire if you pull that (not that I dont think it's not do able, cause it is)..it'll actually make me want to build one..LOL

Don't worry bout that, you won't be retiring anytime soon. lol. . . but when i pull over 1g/w i still bet you'll want to tier. lol. :ganjamon:

well, lets finish it up OK?

Some EnG harvest shots. . . not really any good close up close-ups. . . I'll take some from the cured buds I have now.

The EnG Came in at abut .5 lb. . . not impressive, but I could really tell that I stalled them out with the drought just before they were supposed to get fat, so girth here leaves much to be desired. Next time, with no drought, i bet these girls double their weight in girth.

well here we go:

I gave them a very close trim this time:

this one is not the biggest, just chose one at semi-random to give an idea of avg. cola size.

EnG-Fin-06.JPG

here is a rough cut. . . from here, all the trim is saved for sugar leaf stew or something like that. Point is, it's frosty trim, saved and used. the rest is tossed.

these are vacuum sealed, and have a built in hand pump. . . keeps the smell out of my small apt. this is obviously not all of it, just the biggest best colas. they are mine. Also the wheel is all mine so I can de-seed as I smoke. My family gets charity from the smaller stuff. lol.

Beautiful Budage.

Love the 420 Pic!!! Props bro.

thanks man

:cheertwo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::cheertwo:

I'll :rollit: one. As a toast..:grinjoint:

thanks bro ;)

very nice. no more seedy mexi weed for you ;)

thank god. Finally stash again!!!

:bravo:

When I first saw them I thought they were those tinted Pyrex baking dishes, lol.

Herb: It's what's for dinner.

Man, what a dish!

thanks bro, lol yeah, the vacuum thing is convenient. cheap at big lots.

hey brotha of the wheel. So I made it threw most of your journals and I must applaud you for all the great info and thank you very much for sharing.
check out my journal I put them right into 12/12 from the go right out of the clone box and I have not used any additives. just A+B bloom.
I know your tired of the wheel but before ya hang her up TRY THAT BUSHMASTER you bought I really dont think you'll be dissapointed.
and here is a fiew more tips
loly pop the plants when your done vegging then hit them with bushmaster.
flush once a week with clearx
trim the leaves (the bigger suckers) at week 4 and 6-8 to let the light into the canope
trust me these things will help your yeld drmatically.
my first run of the wheel I did not do any of the tips I have posted except the leaf trimming but I am excited to try all these methods myself (my clones are ready I'm just waiting for the ones in there to finish)
I hope you keep spinning bro cause I know you can make it work and make it work well

good luck man

Thanks bro, but the wheel has already been taken down and has been stored. . . I'll get back to it when I move somewhere with more room.

Actually butch was right when he said I had this grow buy the short hairs up until the unplugged pump trajedy. . . up until that point, I had solved most of the big problems that plagued my earlier grows. . .

this round I had very healthy root structures
No stem rot or any wicking problems from overwatering
No salt buildup or lockout

if only i had forgone the drought mistake, I think i would have had a very respectable pull. . . If the 16 plants i pulled were the biggest and best and each gave me 10 grams. . . and the plants that made it doubled in size without that stress, then that would have been 200g + 160g = 3/4 lb. . . . just goes to show, in the wheel i dropped about 2/3 of my weight from the drought, whereas i lost maybe 1/2 of my yield at most in the EnG.

I agree on the lollipop, but i just understand why now. . . i think the auxin flushing makes all branches grow fairly evenly, sending a good portion of plant energy to branches on the bottom that doesn't get much light. . . you need to trim those up to get the plant to concentrate on the top (it doesn't know its the top)

i whole heartedly agree with a weekly flush.

I'll give her another go someday. . . just need a break, and something more robust for now.

if you want me to check out your journal hit me with a link bro. . . .I rarely search for new threads anymore. . . .make it easy on a stoner. lol.

My Quest for silence. . .

So with the wheel out of the picture for a while, my room just got much quieter. . . A great thing if you live in a double. on the top floor no less. . . I believe my neighbors actual words were "sounds like a death ray over my bedroom". . . . They're pretty good peeps though, i moved it to a different room with carpeting and tried to make it better, but it was always audible. they said nothing more for over a year. they deserve a break too i guess ;)

now. . . to make everything else as quiet and stealth as possible. With no grow going on, I am free to play with all my equipment, my layout, the plan. . . I am obviously getting way smaller in scale with one less tent and one less wheel. i was doin too much.

Surprisingly, set up the way the CAP instructions tell you to, the unit is pretty damn loud itself. shooting a jet of water down two feet into a barrel of water makes an unmistakeable sound, and it is fairly loud too. lets see what we can do here. . .

fist, the tiny stream of water shooting out of the dumb siphon elbow is loud as hell. toss that thing and replace with a T piece, and on the side that is acting like that pinhole, use a piece of hose to connect a ball valve to control flow, and point it at the wall of the barrel. silent. now, for return line; replace with an elbow, point at the wall, silent. in the control bucket; I rotated the elbow 180* to put the elbow part in the bucket, and splash it off the wall. silent.

now, the pumps in the reservoirs vibrate. if they lie on the floor the vibrate the floor. . . solution was I cut the poly hose so that the pump hangs 1" from the floor with out touching it. kills vibrations. silent. My Ebb n Gro is now in Stealth Mode

If you are in my room, you can hear the ballast fan, the air pump that is suspended to dampen its vibrations. and a slight trickle of water for 15 minutes of every 4 hours, and I do mean slight (Feeding time). and everything is running. . .

no fans, no air circulation, no carbon filters (well, maybe cycle one every so often), all water cooled, and it's working like a charm. without the 600 on the room is cool and the tent gets to about 6 or 7 degrees above ambient, and the chiller is not on, so i can use it on the res as it was intended. water cooled is silent, and completely the shit. . . i still have to try it in the summer though.

pump up some co2 next time, maybe i can get a co2 controller if i don't need a bigger chiller, although it might be doseable with a timer since i can infrequently cycle my carbon filter if i want. there will have to be AC in the tent in the summer anyways. not sure if I have the juice to run one and a big chiller. . .

anyways,
if you are in the next room, you can hear nada. hopefully my neighbors will hear nada.
I can close everything and it stays temperate for the first time in a long time. . the only thing making any real heat is the ballast and the radiation. and it isn't all that much, the water takes it all.

after i build the aero unit I'll start up again... hopefully before the summer heat sets in.
when I do, my room will officially be
"STEALTH SCHMODED"

EnG'ers out there, are you schmoded? I am now ;)

;)

Awesome mods man. I like my Eng noises... makes me know its still working lol.

I want to quiet the fan noises. Ever try the duct mufflers?

nope, seen them at the hydro shop, but I've never seen one working. . . . i guess no need for me to anymore either. I got rid of my inline fan. . . it was so loud i never even ran it for 5 minutes.

Thanks, bro, yeah that makes sense if you don't have to worry about others and guests, but when you live in a shoe box. . . quiet is pretty important.

I guess it doesnt bother me over the fan noise lol. Really though thats my biggest complaint is the noise 2 x 6 inch 450CFM fans make. If I could quiet the fans than I'm sure the next loudest thing would bother me.

Like a small (effin) LearJet it sounds like!!!

I'll :grinjoint: to that!

Often there is noise involved in air moving through the "duct" work if it's that accordion-like stuff. That can be solved by using rigid metal duct wherever possible.

Some of the quieter axial fans that I've seen had a few small V-shaped notches cut into the trailing edges of the blades. If you've got an old fan that you're not using and can afford to experiment on you might try doing so.

As for squirrel-cage fans... I don't think anyone was ever expected to be able to sleep just a few feet away from a Dayton blower, lol.

ALL fans make more noise when they are dirty. Not just when stuff is wrapped around the shaft and causing it to work harder, but on the "blades" too. I know people try to keep their grow rooms clean but over time things happen. Check/clean all fans regularly. Also lubricate the ones that are not sealed/no-maintenance ones with whatever the manufacturer calls for.

And sound-absorbing tile, acoustical ceilings, double walls with an air-gap in between and a sound-absorbing liner (rubber mat?) at the frame contact-points never hurts. Even laying rigid Styrofoam insulation on the floor as a base might give a measurable result.
