Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

Interesting how much they've flowered mines in a similar position where the fence blocks a couple of hours morning sun.

Yeah they are in full on flower mode compared to my girl, but she gets most of the sun all day, just a bit of shade in the arvo :thumb: also think its a lot to do with his ferts he uses, like them amgrow pellets you mix into soil, doesnt even know if they are for flower or veg

Damn, I wish I had the space to get myself set up with another couple of tents.

Actually, it's not so much space as a household member who would give birth to fully grown angry spitting cobras if he found them.

Its great running a few tents, keeps everything flowing nicely and gives me the chance to have a good play around :) I just wish i had more space, maybe double the area i have now would be perfect :thumb:

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

I have been thinking the past few weeks about a project i want to get started on come winter time, im hoping i have the space by then, basically want to start messing around with my light schedule to see what can be achieved. Im not talking these 24/0, 20/4, 16/8 schedules etc, about to lose the plot and make my own days, here is where the insanity comes into it i guess, to start with i will flower a plant under 24/12 making her 1 day equal to our 1.5 days :thumb: my thoughts on this is flowering is determined by the dark hours not light, if i can pump an extra 12 hours of light into her each day without seeing any adverse effects im sure the flowers would double in either size or resin production. I will be using my shortest flowering time strain possible at the time as increasing the day length x1.5 will increase the amount of days x1.5, in other words a 8 week strain then becomes a 12 week strain, or maybe it will work the complete opposite and finish a strain even quicker, this is why i want to test :thumb: The only thing i cant wrap my head around is the timer situation, im literally going to have to set each day individually or do it manually which is not possible, then got to thinking about the nanolux ballast and the dongle that can plug in (which i dont have) and also the router you need but then could be controlled completely by PC but the only issue is the additional hardware is like another $200, I may be able to work out my hours over a 7 day period so that its the same schedule each week and just use the digital timer if im lucky.

Sorry guys just thinking out aloud

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

I reckon if you do this, the plant will get up and walk out of the tent.
Would be interesting to actually see what it does.

Surely someones played with lights like this? Would be a shame if
it went tits up and didnt work, especially if you use a bunch of power
and time in the process. Have you had a search to see what people have done?

Not trying to put down the experiment, i'm just too stupid to understand
how it would work and dont want you to lose a crop :)

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

 it should work but i will up the dark hours a bit more than my example hehe, i have seen a lot of tests with lights in a 24hr period but never anything stretched over longer days, this in no way would be an experiment i run alone, ill still be running my full flower tent :thumb: so a loss is no big drama if major catastrophe, just another thing not to try again
I have been doing a bit of math and right now my two best options using a digital timer setup over a regular 7 day week to us would be either 28hr days (6 day week) or 42hr days (4 day week), i probably make no sense to everyone else but i know what im talking about  this is more a mental note for me incase i forget lol

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

examples,
26 hours on, 16 off, this makes it a 42hr day, 4 of these days are equal to 7 of our days.
15 hours on, 13 off, would make it a 28hr day, 6 of these equal our 7 day week.

meaning when the timer gets back to monday (or whatever day your timer starts at) will be exactly the same schedule each week, no messing around setting it all the time or manually have to turn lights on and off.

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

I dont even know how you guys set them digital timers.lol. I use the old dial style jobbies.
If you've worked it to 7 day cycles you could do it on a basic timer. Keen to see what
happens.

When are you setting this up feral? or are you just toying with ideas?

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

Sorta toying with ideas right now, have been thinking about it for some time now, wont be able to do anything till at least winter when i can control temps a bit better as right now id be mad to have my lights on during the day, been 35c+ last week or so, but also need more space before i think about it. the reason i started thinking about it was my problem with turning lights off for photos each night, sometimes i set the timer to always on as i cant really see the screen where its plugged in  this means the lights stay on till the next dark cycle or a few hours before if i have already noticed, have not had any problems with hermys from this activity as it has not interrupted the dark cycle. Now if you on the other hand realized the next day say 4 hours supposedly into the dark cycle and switched it off, the plant would only then get 8 hours of its darkness before lights come back on again, this is what i used to do and was looking for light leaks and all this other crap trying to explain my hermys  Every now and then is not too bad and shouldnt have any problems but i seem to do it in clusters

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

Right so back on track, a little less stoned and a lot to get through :) This post will be a little update including how i go about defol and topping with a bit of explanation in lamens terms  this is in no way saying you have to do this and there is only one way you can go about it, thats dead wrong, take what you like and apply it ;) be warned there is no technical terms or expressions used

Decided to do this after seeing how much the 8 strain dwc needed cleaning up

Topping/Defoliation

Screenshot_2100.png

First up i made this pic above to explain what im talking about, ill start with topping, we all know what it is, we take the main top from the stem leaving however many nodes we want to grow into new branches, in my case i have left 2.

Screenshot_2101.png

Now i hear you say well that was easy and done, yes and no, a lot of people will leave the main fanleaf for that stem/branch intact, anyone watched what happens after you take the top and leave the leaf? that leaf will be the first leaf that will slowly die off on the plant, its job is done, while it is dying off though the stem will continue to lengthen so you end up with a lot of stretch by the time these new nodes grow and ready for topping again. So what do we do to stop that branch from gaining length? simple, take the main fan, it will stop it and the plant will not waste any more energy on that stem, it simply becomes a highway for the newer growth, it will still thicken, our fans attatched to our new nodes become our main fanleafs for the new branches and the plant does not stall in any way.

Screenshot_2102.png

Screenshot_2103.png

So working in a normal veg situation i will continue to do this right up until a week or two before switched to flower, once in flower you will soon see which are the dominant branches and which ones need to be cut out :thumb:

Now i hear you ask what about if i dont do topping, can i still defol? yep, think of it in the same way, That leaf is there to grow one branch, any sub-branches have their own fans to control their growth, if you want to stall growth to a certain branch take the fan, what this also accomplishes it forces all of that branches energy to the sub-branches which will then explode with growth :)

In flower is pretty much exactly the same, to maximize stretch leave the fans intact, once stretch is over they will start to die off and the energy then shifts to the sub-branches, in this case the buds, or we can do natures work and speed up the process when we notice stretch is over. Now here is the interesting part, say you have a branch that just takes off and you are running out of room in your tent, take the main fan and it will stall the lengthening of that branch ;) I read everywhere about people not knowing what fans to take in flower to maximize light penetration, i usually try to keep the fans intact to the main cola as much as possible but any lower i will take if they are blocking light, problem is once you start removing fans to budsites in flower you will force it to foxtail. A bud is essentially a whole cluster of nodes and going by my theory if you take the fan it will then force all of its energy to the "sub-branches" which then take off in all directions out of the bud, ala foxtails.

These ones i have taken right back as i dont need big plants for breeding, will be too hard to manage if they are too crowded, even still i have left minimum of 8 tops each which is way too many lol. Most i think have before and after pics, be warned, i went at them hard!

So moving over to the veg tent tonight i was supposed to do work with Sour D male but after moving the other Sour D it had grown so much overnight needed a tidy up and a tie down. should look good tomorrow :)

In flower, White Jack has shot up another 2" overnight, will probably drop her down after changing her res in 2 days, day 5 today.

So if you have any questions, i will try my best to answer them, if there is something you dont understand ask and ill explain if i can, if you think im an idiot, tell me :) Hope all is well, have a great one guys and gals :thumb:

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

I can't believe you don't run a timer. My lady wouldn't know if she was Mary or Joseph if I tried to run the lights manually.

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

 i do run timers, i was just trying to get my head around the longer light schedule and how i would achieve it on a 24hr timer or if id have to do it manually, impossible but a digital timer spread over a week i could work something out :thumb:

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

OK, guess I misunderstood.

This place seems awash with Aussies or is it just pure happenstance that that is what I seem to run into?

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

All good mate, im surprised anyone understood any of it, me and my random ramblings hehe

There are quite a few aussies on here now ;) people from all around the globe, doesnt matter where you are from, we all share one love ;)

I understood perfectly. You are trying to figure out how to make timers exist outside of this time continuum.
Just like your brain and just like me. Lol.

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

Looking good mate. must be getting close to dry, 6 days? Humid? Happy new year man, hope its a good one for you.. I'm saying to everybody but I'll probably be back on before then. Camping in middle nowhere and have full reception, lol.. had to come back home to grab some stuff, man had a humidity issue whilst away. Going to hang around in till lights come on, see what's going on...

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

Thanks Grizz, yeah should be getting close to dry, maybe a couple more days :) been hot as hell here for the past week, humidity been right up there, id bet i would defo have a mold issue if i didnt have my dehumidifier in there :thumb: Happy new years bro :) I bet you have been missing your girls while away, hopefully they are still good to go :) Got any plans for new years? I think im having a quiet one at home this year, the boy is down visiting his nan and pop so a nice relaxing bong filled night sounds awesome hehe

re: Feral's Journal Of Insanity & Some Growing

I'm meant to go back camping but some shits just happened.. so not sure... sounds like your got a good plan :bong:
