Emmie's Organic Garden Using Advanced Lighting Techniques

I'm onboard to the finish line... The AK47 and my Chronic are very much the same, so I will be watching closely... Chronic is a AK47/Northern Lights combo... Your plants look great... Looks to be a successful grow to the finish, very nice work! It's late so I'll be reading much more of your journal in the morning... Went to see the new Quentin T. movie tonite, GREAT MOVIE...

Hi Emilya, Subscribed and all caught up.

First off, I see why you have been nominated for Member Of The Month two months running. Good conversations, good growing, and good energy here :)

Second off, well, um, ... I had a lot of thoughts while reading but they just aren't important enough to share considering how so many of them have been well expressed. I think I'll just sit in the corner and brew some worm castings tea.. it's been awhile.

Lovely girls you have pictured here

Thanks Ripples, glad you are here. Thanks for the movie review too... I have that one on my list to see soon.

Thank you so much for the compliments Radogast... very much appreciated coming from another who has been nominated at least as many times as I have, and I have been watching you too, to see why you get up into the top ratings, and from you I have learned that I need to visit more of the grow journals and not just concentrate on the brand new folks having problems with their grow.

As far as comments not made... don't be shy my friend. :) I live for comments. lol. I see you liked my caged flypaper from your rep comment, and I thank Weeze on the big island for that one. I suspect that you are a lot like me, picking up little tricks and hints like this from hundreds of grows around the internet... it is amazing what one can learn by watching others.

I now owe you the same respect you have shown me, and a visit to your grow room. I will catch up with you soon my friend, I promise. Thank you for your multi-day visit and catch up... it gave me great pleasure to see you clearly working your way through my log, carefully reading each entry and liking many... seeing this activity, especially from a peer, really makes a girl feel good. Thank you.

Hardly a peer :) If you read my new grow journal, Radogast 2016: The Neverending Growing <===== Shameless plug you will see a yellow photo of some very sad looking girls in 5 gallon buckets from this time last year. I'm pretty sure your photos from this time last year are a lot better looking.

(flower, day 46) Lights are at 9:45/14:15

The plants seem to be doing just fine. In fact, they appear to be doing amazingly well, with at least 2 varieties showing some fall colors. The Tangerine Dream is definitely turning its leaves red, and it seems to be just now entering the last two week stretch. The colors that are showing so far on the buds and with the bright red pistils is striking, the tangy fragrance is intoxicating. You can see her in the bottom left of this picture:

Green Crack is also starting to show some colors... still not sure where she is going with it. The buds however are amazing and started to chunk up over a week ago. She so far has been strong and able to hold up all but a couple of buds, but I suspect the next couple of weeks (she has maybe 3 left to go) will bring on some weight that has to be dealt with. This girl is going to be a producer, and already test buds with 75% cloudy are showing their power to us in the testing room.

AK-47 is doing two different things in my tent. The tall one is 4-6" away from the light. She doesn't like it. I have a very good hood and there is no heat, but still, she doesn't like it... she is tolerating it, but she is behind her sister, a foot and a half below her. The tall one may have to go longer... we will see, but her short sister is divine. Test buds indicate this will be a strong one... and already chunking up heavy bud clusters, she will also be a producer. She is also taking on some colors, showing some reds, yellows and purples... very pretty, and a nice strong fragrance. This will be the first one harvested, her window opening up 1 week from today.

So everyone is doing better. I last gave everyone some of SweetSue's brewed oatmeal, and all indications are that they loved it and things are going very well with the microlife. There is some color changing going on, some of it yellowing, some not. When I see a leaf in the way of a bud, especially inner ones, they get pulled... between me and the plants we are keeping things clean and allowing good airflow and light penetration.

The biggest surprise this grow is the reaction to the steadily decreasing light period and the slightly cooler temperatures in the grow room. Instead of 79° as the base temperature, I have calmed things down and now have a base at 72°. When the lights come on it gets up to 75 or 76, and at night, 72. These two factors seem to be bringing on the fall colorations. It is also bringing on cheaper utility bills... a win-win in my book. Also, the buds just seem to be maturing faster than normal to me. I am not seeing any amber trichomes yet... but I do like the size and density of my buds.

One fear that comes along with playing with the lighting periods is hermi's... and I have been looking for them. So far no one has gone over to the dark side, but I will admit that in the strong breeze that is my tent (lots of fans) pollen did not exactly stay where I put it this time. Next time I do the pollination thing, I will have to protect the site a bit better, involving whips, chains, spray bottles and baggies, not to mention a twist tie or two. It seems according to the few test buds, that there are a few seeds lurking about... they aren't everywhere, and we mostly have sensimilla... just a few surprize seeds here and there. Oh well, next round will be clean and I am already collecting seeds before I have really even harvested anything. The 10 or so that I have found, even 2 weeks before harvest, were well developed, brown and probably viable... they have gone into the jar.

Anyone I missed, Happy New Year!
Be well everyone, blessings,
Emi

Looks like we are headed into harvest at almost the same time. My sativas have a few weeks yet but my indicas are finishing up right now, probably to harvest sometime next week. I will harvest at first sign of any amber, right now I am 50/50 cloudy /clear. I enjoy this time as you must also, the color changing is always a pleasure to see. and the building up of trichomes as well. I bought a 10x macro lens for my iphone that is working great. they are only about 10 dollars and the pics are turning out really well. Take a glance at the hunger games thread in my sig for some examples. I like the 10x macro more than loupe pics or those cheap phone microscopes, lots more field of view. Was actually very surprised at the quality of trich pics you can get with an iphone!

Thanks again for the help last night Emilya. They are all looking better today than last night. I definitely see a difference already, even seeing some new growth overnight. Haven't seen that in over a week! Enough about my stuff, your ladies look marvelous! I like the red colors in the Tangerine. After I finish this grow I was going to try some of the more colorful strains next. (any suggestions?) The AK47 is very similar to my chronic. I normally harvest around 63 days give or take a couple. Went as early as 59 and late as 67. I have been averaging about 4oz per plant. Curious to see what you get? I never see anyone growing Chronic, not sure why? Would love a whiff of that Tangerine (I love that smell). Surprisingly, I don't smoke but I do enjoy the smells! My Lime Green smells so good, it's like sleeping in a pine tree forest! Overpowers everything else. As soon as I unzip that tent my wife upstairs starts pounding the floor! Her sign she can smell the pretty lady... Anyways things look great on your end. Looking forward to seeing how they finish... Will be posting a picture of LG mother in flower on my journal. Check it out, see the difference when in flower.

Whips, chains and twist ties .. Oh my.

Curious about the conjunction of 75% cloudy and 3 weeks to go on the Green Crack.
I normally only get 7-10 days passing through cloudy between clear and 15-30% amber. (I am used to 0-60% Sativa as opposed to 75% Sativa)
Where are you expecting to be in 3 weeks?
keep in mind that my lights are now only on for less than 10 hours... nothing here is as is should be... you might be right too and she will be quick... going to have to give her a good look very soon. According to the calendar and the breeder, she is not going to be in the harvest window until the 20th, almost 2 weeks from now. She may surprise everyone though... I will be watching. I certainly don't want to hurry this one either so fully ready to wait till day 69 or beyond... but it's all about the trichomes... I am going for oblivion. :)

(Flower day 52) lights 9.5/14.5

All the girls are starting to finish out... The first AK-47's window opens up tomorrow, and so far I see mostly cloudy, just a few amber's here and there. Sometime during this week she should turn. The others are hitting their last two week window and should be coming along soon.

We are going to try an experiment soon regarding the 48 hours of dark at the end. This first plant, as soon as it is showing 2% amber, we will give her the last watering, take tons of pictures to document where she is, and then we are going to put her in the love tent for 48 hours in the dark. After that, we will take more pictures and see if we can see any compelling evidence that the 48 hours "packed the trichomes on" or any of the other comments that are usually made from the keep in the dark crowd.

Anyway... all the leaves are not pretty any more nearing the end, but I am seeing better bud development, better colors, more stickiness, more weight, than I have ever seen before. The 3 hours of 1200 watts definitely was a factor here, and I believe that the shortened light periods caused the plants to mature out faster, allowing for more resin manufacturing and gaining weight at the end.

Here are the pictures that say it all... and please excuse the camera setting that seems to have turned everything on its side. (thought I was being slick)

Looking great Em. Nice full colas here. Makes me excited to grow Tutankhamon, it will be my first AK-47 strain. Popped two seeds yesterday.

Make sure to pull those full brown curly fans. I have neglected to do this in the past and it can be an inlet for bud rot!

Stop by my hunger games and say hello, I am about to harvest too!

Thanks Shig! I have been getting in there every day or two to pull the brown stuff because I had exactly that problem a few years back... lost almost an entire crop of purple kush in that debacle. I will stop in right now... been trying to get around and see all the grows; there are a ton of them here at 420magazine!

So pretty. Luv me sum bud porn!

So, I've done decreasing light cycles before. Went from 12 to 10 on in about 8 steps. I wasn't really worried about hermi from decreasing cycles. Nor did I ever see any hermi action from it.

2cents.

Thanks for the positive comment about the hermaphodism... As slowly as these changes are being made I didn't think it would stress the plant out to bad, just still a little concerned about here at the end when the light slips down to 9/15 and stays there.

It will be at the very end. So if any hermaphroditism does happen and I don't think it will, the pollen released won't have time to start generating seeds before you chop them down. If it was a few more weeks I would worry about it, but since you are at the end you will be fine. The problem with late flower hermies is when you run a perpetual that has plants of mixed ages in the grow. That can be devastating for sure.

They're beautiful Emmie. I'm a few pages out of sync here since I've been so busy, but I'm going to take a look at your lighting log sometime today. I find this intriguing.

Cajun has a group of us playing with the use of essential oils to stress the plant through bloom and he says his current crop is the stickiest he's seen. I'm excited about trying it myself. If you're interested I did a quick overview of the technique.

Using essential oils to increase trichome development.

Time to make myself walk away and have some breakfast. :laughtwo: I'll be back later. Lots of on-site reading to do in the Medical Marajuana threads, but I take breaks. :battingeyelashes:

Shiggity and Tead, I'll see you soon too. :hugs:
