Emmie's Breeder's Run: Chemdog IBL BP#6 x Blowfish F2 By Santero

For my next strain I am going to bring in an impossible to obtain breeder's line to my journals. Bred by Santero in Germany at the end of last year, these seeds are expected to produce some extraordinary marijuana. The cross is as follows, with strain information below. You are free to look up the lineage of each of these yourselves, as well as the breeder comments on the forums about this specific cut.

The cross is:
Chemdog IBL 'builder's pheno #6' x Blowfish 'F2 Male'

I have started 5 of them today and have another 5 in reserve to probably breed back to later.

Here is the individual "basic" strain info:
Reservoir Seeds - Chemdog D IBL
The first inbred line based on the legendary Chemdog D Clone. This is some of the strongest, tastiest herb ever put on Earth, and now anybody can grow it! Flower time of 65-70 days, and without a doubt, extreme odor control will be necessary.
X
Blowfish (F2)
Breeder: Dutch Flowers Seeds
Lineage: (G13 X Oregon Funk) X (G13 X Blue Dot)

Since this F2 component of these seeds should show it's genetics strongly in this run, I am providing a full description of this part of the lineage. I will be also growing another version of this experiment alongside of these plants, again with the same Blowfish F2 component, so we are practically guaranteed to see the G13 influence. --Emmie

Breeders Description: Named after the deadly Japanese delicatessen, this breeding project begun when we set out to improve taste and yield two weak traits of the G-13 by using Oregon Funk as a pollen donor. The results were quite pleasing but the smoke test revealed that G-13's power had been downgraded somewhat. Then it was the turn of a very impressive Blue Dot hybrid stud, which qualified the G-13 with great taste and no harm to its potency, although this time yield was less than desired. Finally, we applied heavy selection to each of these two G-based lines, and crossed them giving rise to Blowfish, a winning combination of G-13's deadly punch and the quality and taste of the Funk and Dot lines.
Blowfish exhibits great F1 vigor and disease resistance in a well-behaved plant that avoids the undesirable traits of "blue" genetics (difficult to grow, brittle, leafy, poor calyx to leaf ratio) while maintaining the flavor of the Funk and Dot ancestors and the brain-warping power of the G-13. A prolific flower producer even under poor conditions (it actually prefers low nutrient levels), this low-maintenance strain bears wonderfully dense buds, with a thick coating of milky crystals that will rival the best of the "white" strains in both crystal coverage and brain-thumping quality, with much better flavor and yield. We are proud to offer a hybrid carrying no White Widow, Northern Lights, Skunk or Blueberry in its composition.

Parental selection focused on potency and yield, as taste and resin genes were already well fixed on the Funk and Dot lines. Outstanding ancestors infuse the plant with a high quality feel, evident in the glossy leaves, harmonious phenotype and the particularly frosted, heavy and aromatic buds. Blowfish tends to branch out while adding girth to flowering clusters, forming sizeable snowy colas for excellent yield. Despite the remarkable density of its bud structure, mold and mites have not been a problem. This fish likes plenty of water as well as appropriate root and growing space, but prefers low levels of nutrients to fully express its potential. Very well-suited for bubbler systems and SCROG styles.

Blowfish retained the breathless intensity of G-13, with much better yield and a unique taste of berries and motor grease with fuel undertones that will appeal to pot-snobs. The experienced puffer will recognize a rotten animal scent lurking in the background of this Puffer, a sign of the abiding sativa influence that was a common denominator in parental stock selection. Its buds smoke very smooth and clean, with a great berry taste and a hashy feel that relates to its impressive crystal coverage.

Known as Fugu in Japan, Blowfish flowers live up to its namesake as a lethal delicacy with a body-paralyzing yet heady cerebral effect that defies traditional "Indica" and "Sativa" classification. The plant's elegance stands in sharp contrast with the muscle and intensity of its buds, which stun the body but thrust the mind into a euphoric trippy experience with excellent visuals and duration. It does not seem to build tolerance with experienced smokers, maintaining its knock-out quality over repeated use.

Here we go!

Meet the survivors of the germination process, two CDBF out of 10.

cdiblx2.JPG

These seeds were suspect as soon as I saw them... they were tiny. Most of them had stripes and looked to be mature, but apparently this was not the case. I put 5 of them in a cup of water and within a day they had sunk and started sending out a root. Three were carefully planted in soil and two were planted in jiffy plugs. After a week it was determined that none were going to come up, and 5 more were started. The same thing happened, a rapid root emerged and they were all planted 1/2" down in soil. This time, two managed to fully germinate. One came up with no apparent problems, but stayed very short. The other came up with an attached seed pod problem, but a small application of saliva helped it break the pod apart and let the cotyledons separate... but part of the seed pod is still attached. These were clearly immature seeds, but luckily two have managed to make it. With luck, we have one of each... let's keep our fingers crossed.

Here is the one that had problems coming out of the shell:

And here is the stronger one, and a quick grower... probably a male.

Such is the nature of dealing with non-commercial seeds... you never know what is going to happen. We have two plants here, and even if they are both male, we will breed back the Chemdog IBL x Blowfish genetics back to the other Blowfish we are working... but hopefully I can get a whole new set of seeds from this set. We will see what options open up as we learn what we have here.

I hope your garden is going well, and that you have a bit more success than has been had here.

Blessings,
Emmie

Well, things are going fairly well for our brave survivors. Only one seed out of 10 produced a strong plant. The scrawny one of these two survivors really had a rough start and had problems sending out roots initially. It was so bad that she actually needed to be propped up for a couple of days after finding her lying down on the job one morning. Careful watering and propping her up, and carefully packing new soil around her struggling trunk seems to have saved her, and I am happy to report that she has within a couple of days almost doubled her skinny trunk size and is looking much better. Now we just have to cross all of our fingers and toes, and hope that we have both a male and a female here... or two females.

So here we are at about 2 weeks, loving the purple Pur Par light...

Both plants are doing very well now and have been up-potted to 2 gallon cloth bag containers. They are pretty plants, and have a strong structure. So far they are handling my gardening methods very well. It is hard now to tell which one had the slow start. Root structure looked strong and consistent in the entire rootballs, and transplanting was done before there were any signs of stress.

as an update here, let's show a picture of the entire veg table... things are going very well, the plants are adapting to the 2gal smart pots like champions. The watering cycle has reduced to around 5 days and no signs of distress are seen other than in leaves that will be discarded soon by the plant anyway as being too close to the top of the soil. I am getting great uplift, fast growth and perfect color... these are happy plants, basking in 540w of my PurPar T5 glow, 18/6. Temp is the only thing out of whack during part of the day... it is hot here in my location and I am testing the theory that these tropical plants in veg really don't care so much if it gets up into the lower 90's. So far so good... 92 is the worst I have seen during the afternoons with the airconditioning set back with everyone at work and the big lights off with the only thing heating up the place being the T5 lights. At night, midnight to 6, these lights go off to save heat accumulation and energy, and the house air-conditioning and the window unit in there take care of any massive heat increases from 10pm-10am that might be seen when the big lights are doing their job in the flower tent. As a result, nighttime temps in the grow room are always in the lower 80's when it is hot outside, and right at 79 when the nights get cool. Humidity also is something I am not trying to control during the day, thinking it costs more to reduce it here in the midwest than it would be worth in additional production. Humidity comes and goes with the seasons here during the days... doesn't seem to hurt a thing.

So far these girls have gotten nothing but RO water and light, while sitting in their mix of supersoil and Roots Organic original, which should have anything the plants could want, plus so much more. As soon as the roots have established fully and I see a 3 day wet/dry cycle, they will get their first vegging AACT, complete with all the normal stuff, oatmeal for its special microbeasties, fish hydrolysate for its amino acids and vitamins, one drop of Superthrive for it's magic, and dandelion rooting extract for everything that super-accumulator brings to the table. This first carefully constructed AACT should get them into early flower before needing another.

I think that I may have been very fortunate with these two plants and it looks like the odds are with me... cross your fingers.

I spotted male parts on one of the two today. The lack of those structures and the reluctance to show yet makes me think his companion is a girl... time will tell. I will be moving the male to the love tent this week.

This will be good... very good... and then next round we can work on emphasising the blowfish traits with the other cross. Em's is happy.

there were three versions made of this mating that
were spread to only a few friends and fellow growers:

cd ibl (pheno #1) x bf (#2 male)
cd ibl (pheno #1) x bf (#4 male)
cd ibl (pheno #6) x bf (#2 male) - very limited numbers

you are growing the rarest of them all ;)

they look very nice.
best vibes, brother !!

Hi Santi! I am so honored to have you visit my log! My friend in Georgia who insisted that I grow out your seeds will be thrilled that you have found this and can follow along! I am very sad to report though, that both of my IBL's turned out to be male... I have been putting off doing this last update for a couple of days until it was totally and painfully obvious, but I have to report that with this particular version, I failed miserably. The only explanation that I have is that the seedlings were extremely pH sensitive and I flat out screwed up not carefully adjusting right at the beginning. The contrast between these and the Chocolate Cheese was striking as far as the ease of getting them going... but as you will see on my update of that thread, also a high percentage of males in that batch. I do have one strong female in there though, so I am going to get to see the Blowfish yet...

Thank you for all you do.

Emmie

Santeros, welcome to 420 Magazine. :welcome: How nice of you to stop in and check up on Emmie's breeding project. It's a shame the IBLs turned out to be males, given their beauty and how hard Emmie worked to save them, but hopefully she can give you a good show from here on out as she falls back into plan B.

It's always a delight to have a talented breeder wandering among us.

:Namaste:

Well, here he is, getting ready to express himself. His pollen will be collected and saved for future use.

His partner is still in the veg tent, refusing to commit, one way or the other. All of these plants are refusing to commit, including the CC x BF of which I am still only sure about one of. This is crazy... I am good at this... these plants just don't want to finally decide to be female. Not only that, but I switched the veg lights to 12/12 3 days ago, just to get them to commit... and still they won't give.

So, Santi... let me ask you if you have seen this. Is the male F2 influence from the Blowfish so strong and so dominant that it is making these plants reluctant not to go that way? I have seen multiple conversations over the years that the sex of a plant is not necessarily determined in the seed, and that up to a certain point, the plant can actually decide to go either way. Ed R. started this in his book I think, but I never was a believer in it... but I think for my first time, I am seeing that decision point in my tents. I can see multiple preflower sites, and at least half of the plants look like they might be attached at the base and not up on stalks... but still no pistils... no confirmation. Even the one early female still only sports 2 pistils... and they are hard to see they are so tiny. Frustrating to say the least, I want to up-pot asap.
