Hey EC,

NL is looking great. New growth is very nice, now. :goodjob:

Oh, cellar grow - first time, 4 plants, 4 oz, second grow 4 plants - 2 oz. I found out what not to do with the lights (expensive, for me). So, now I just grow outdoors.

Good day everyone! el Cheapo here with another journal entry. My last journal entry was 4 days ago and things have been going well since then. I haven't made any changes to the setup nor have I spent any money over the last few days so there's not much to talk about there. I do plan to modify the setup over the weekend but I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do. Look out for my next journal entry to see what happened.

Today I would like to talk about what I have been doing to the plants since my last journal entry - LST, leaf tucking, defoliating.

LOW STRESS TRAINING - LST
In my last journal entry I showed a picture of the Northern Lights and the new growth it has gained since I first set anchor and pulled the top down. Now, since my last post I have begun pinning down as many branches as possible. They're not that long yet but the sooner they are pulled down the sooner the inner growth can get light. With autos time is of the essence so aggressive LST ASAP is key to growing larger plants. In fact I began training the Critical Purple on day 14. Wait until you see her... ;)

LEAF TUCKING
Leaf tucking can be a real pain. I'll tuck a whole bunch of leaves and two hours later half of them have popped back out. And with more and more leaves growing every day the task becomes more frustrating. I might need to hire a full time tucker! I joke but, seriously, I have come to understand how very important it is to stay on top of leaf tucking so now it's not so bad. At first I was nervous thinking I may harm the plant/leaves while tucking so I was gentle. Now? I'm surprised the plant is still alive. I have no problem with grabbing a handful (slight exaggeration) ;) of leaves and stuffing them into a hole.

IMG_20171208_211358162.jpg

DEFOLIATING
I did some research on defoliating autos the other day. I found growers who removed many leaves and some who removed zero. I did not get to compare end yields between opposite styles but the conclusion that I have come to for myself is that leaving the leaves on the plants is important. Only remove leaves that can not be tucked/are blocking light from reaching new growth. A couple days ago I removed one leaf that was covering the bend of the stem and all the new growth/branches. This is the only leaf I have removed to date. The result is huge. The middle of the plant is now wide open for the light. If I find more leaves in the future that should be removed I'll take them off but ONLY if I can not tuck it nicely. Removing leaves causes shock/less growth. Keeping leaves on the plant provides fuel during flower/death.

IMG_20171208_203822620_HDR.jpg

Hello everyone. el Cheapo here with another journal entry. Boy oh boy what an experience this grow has become. I learn something new every day. The grow is going well for a first timer but looking back at the process I wish I knew then what I know now. There's just so much to learn. Anyways...

Today I would like to talk about changes to the setup, grow tips and how the plants are doing.

CHANGES TO THE SETUP
Since my last setup update a few things have changed. I made the grow are larger so that it is easier for me to do work in there. I simply pulled down one "wall" of the space and extended it out a foot or so further. I then added a new mattress cover ($1.25 Dollar Tree) to make the area longer. I may buy another cover and make it even longer. Another thing I did to the setup was add 3 new light sockets/bulbs. Since the NL has started to flower I also switched out most of the blue coloured bulbs for some orange/red ones. Another thing is I added a mirror to the grow area. I walked in the room the other day and saw it hanging on the wall. I thought what an idiot, I should have been using this thing right from the beginning. Anyway check this out. The next thing I saw after the mirror was a DVD that was laying on the desk upside down. I said holy crap that's shiny. Then I thought to myself I could use a bunch as reflectors. So, what I did was grab a stack of blank DVD's that I had laying around and glued them to the inside of the light fixture. I'm not sure exactly if it was a good idea or not but hey what the heck. When I look at the discs reflecting light I can see a cool light spectrum pattern. Every colour from red to purple. Maybe there's something extra to that.

GROW TIPS
Yes I'm a noob when it comes to growing cannabis but I'm not a noob when it comes to learning. Over the last couple of months I have studied hard and have come to understand quite a few things in relation to growing weed. I'd like to take a moment now to list a few tips that may help new and or experienced growers achieve greater success. Keep in mind I could be wrong at any point but this is my opinion from my experience.

* Don't over water. Let new seedling grow in original wet soil for 1-2 weeks before watering.

* Use the cylinder method for watering new plants. Imagine the size of the plant as a cylinder then water that exact same area of soil.

* Use water PH 6-6.5 for soil grows.

* Autoflowering plants will begin to flower at around 3 weeks old whether you're ready or not. Veg stops bloom begins.

* Do not transplant, defoliate or stress autoflower plants. Low Stress Training is fine. Only remove fan leaves that are blocking lower growth. Remove asap with autos.

* Tuck all leave instead of removing. Again, only remove leaves that are blocking new growth/bud sites.

* When LSTing pull stem/branches down by the leaves. Only hook around the stem/branches if necessary. Reasons why I avoid the stem/branches are - I don't want to "choke" or damage them, I avoid damaging flower sites, so buds don't grow over the ties, It helps move leaves out of the way...

* If you plan to LST plant seed a couple inches off center.

* In addition to tucking leaves use ties to pull them down or aside so they are not in the way of new growth.

* Keep room temperature at 80F or 25C.

* To be on the safe side keep humidity levels at a normal everyday average. There are more specific methods available for research. ie More humidity for veg and less for flower. Ultimately, drier air is safer than moist air.

* Aim for 10,000 lumens worth of light per plant. Use blue 5000-6500K bulbs for veg and 2700-3000K for flower. Actually, I would recommend a 3:1 ratio for the bulbs during the two stages. ie 75% blue 25% red for veg, 75% red 25% blue for flower. These guidelines are for household cfl/led bulb grows.

* Use reflective materials to redirect escaped light back towards the plant(s).

* Keep bulbs 4 inches above the plants. Use the hand theory - If it's too hot for your hand it's too hot for the plant. Personally, I'll place the bulbs as close as 2 inches at times.

* Keep a fan blowing a light breeze on the plants at all times. This will strengthen the plant, disperse heat created by light bulbs, remove excess moisture from the plant area, deter insects/flies from hanging out in the grow space and deliver carbon dioxide to the plant.

* Be patient.

THE PLANTS
NORTHERN LIGHTS DAY 36
She's coming along quite well imo. Maybe a little slow or small idk but it's all good. She has started to flower since my last journal entry so let's see how she grows.

TRAUMA PATIENT
She's a beast for real. I can't believe it. She now seems to be on her way to a full recovery after her visits to hell. She is now being trained and I'm assuming it's a photo. Now I just hope it's a female. Soon time will tell.

Well that's all for today folks. I wish a merry holiday season to those who celebrate this time of year. I'll be back in a couple of days to write up another journal entry and keep anyone who is observing up to date on my progress. Thanks for stopping by and until next time... Peace Out!

Good day everyone. Merry Christmas! El Ceapo here with a quick journal entry. Been busy lately and its been 12 days since my last post. I'm just going to post a couple pictures for today showing how they're doing. The setup is the same so plants have been under the same light setup for a while now. I'll be back in a couple days to talk about some issues I had about a week ago regarding dying leaves. Until then have a wonderful day and I'll be back soon.

High EC,

It has been awhile. I was wondering if something serious happened. Glad I was wrong.

Ladies are looking well manicured.I'm always so fascinated with how much you really don't need to spend If necessary. Kinda fun discovering new ways.

Hope you had a Merry Christmas!

Good day everyone! El cheapo here with another journal entry. Yes once again it's been awhile, 10 days maybe since my last entry, but things have just been so busy around here lately I haven't had a moment to get online and make a post. Anyways, everything about the setup is the same since my last journal entry except for one 1500 lumen bulb I added about a week ago. With the plants now growing too large for the light setup I'm going to have to add on to the fixture or rebuild an entirely new one. Speaking of the plants, let's check them out real quick and see how they're coming along.

NORTHERN LIGHTS DAY 61
She looks to be doing okay though I think she may be a little small. I guess it's not too bad for a first learning grow. A couple of weeks ago I had a few bottom leaves start to die on me and I think it was a combination of aggressive leaf tucking, cold temperatures and under watering. After I warmed up the room and soaked the soil everything went back to normal. The company I bought the seeds from say harvest 70 days from start but I don't see that happening. I don't know exactly how much longer until it's time to chop her down but I'm in no rush.

CRITICAL PURPLE DAY 48
All I can say about this plant is wow. As of today day 48 the plant has not begun to flower. I sent the company I bought the seeds from a message yesterday asking why the plant has not flowered so now I'm waiting to see what they have to say. I did check the packaging that the company sent me originally and sure enough it does say autoflowering seeds so... also, about 3 to 4 weeks ago while I was training or pulling down the main stem I ended up snapping it 95% the way through. Once I noticed what had happened I quickly grabbed a piece of electrical tape and taped the stem back together. Ever since then it doesn't seem like the plant missed a beat. The main stem has only grown taller and taller and in fact too tall for my liking. Anyway I expect great things from this girl. Since she's still vegging I ended up training or pulling all the mid growth or potential bud sites out towards the sides once again. Once the new mid growth rises she's going to be a real monster.

TRAUMA PATIENT
I'm having a lot of fun playing with her. She's an amazing plant. Since I want her to grow slow at the moment I don't give her too much light and as you will see in the images below I have cut all fan leaves off, topped her on multiple branches and have now begun to train her. I don't really know if it's a he or she yet but all signs that I see indicate its female. Soon time will tell.

Well that's all for now folks. Before I go I would just like to say that this grow or this plant is not receiving any extra nutes or super duper bud bloom or whatever you call it. This grow is nothing but soil, seed and water, that's it.

Good day everyone! How's everything going? I hope you are all having a wonderful evening. It's been 4 days since my last journal entry and so far everything seems to be going quite well here. Iv'e made a couple changes and additions to the setup and the plants look to be responding. Without further ado, let's get into it...

Today I would like to talk about free treasure, changes to the setup and of course, about how the ladies are coming along.

FREE TREASURE
It's funny how things work out. In my first attempt at growing my own plants the plan is to be successful while keeping costs at a minimum. Parts of my plan includes buying and using Dollar store items, using unwanted items that are laying around the house AND seeing what I can come across on garbage night. Over the past couple of weeks I've gone for walks through the neibourhood and have found numerous items I can use for the grow/setup. I've found brand new bulbs, pots, pot trays, a water sprayer/mister, curtain rods, scrog items, lamps/sockets, chicken wire... All for free! I know a lot of people won't grab something from the curb but hey it's worth it. Go at night when it's quiet if you don't want be seen. :)

CHANGES TO THE SETUP
Since I got 4 sockets from a trashed chandelier a couple of days ago I have made a couple changes to the setup. I've added a 2700k floodlight (free) and 3 5000k 1500 lumen leds ($4 ea at Dollarama). I repositioned all lights in order to cover a larger area. You'll notice in the image below that i have placed 2 bulbs lower than the others. They're placed there to shine their light in under the plant where new branches are forming. I released the top pipe cleaner last night in order to hook the plant higher and pull it down but I noticed 2 nice little branches that were fighting to break through so I left it off until this morning. I only pulled her down a bit making sure the 2 branches were getting adequate light. I'll probably pull her all the way down tomorrow morning.

IMG_20171204_090654205_HDR.jpg

THE PLANTS
NORTHERN LIGHTS (DAY 27) - She's looking good. Some slight damage from constant leaf tucking but nothing to worry about a far as I'm concerned. The LST I performed 5 days ago looks to be working. The new "hidden" branches are starting to grow out towards the light. The main stem or kola is growing like crazy. I'm very happy about being able to set lights at various levels with this setup otherwise the main stem would far outgrow everything else. I think that within the next day or two I'll be able to pin down more branches. I gave her a medium watering last night btw. Not Saturday as I said I would in my last journal.

CRITICAL PURPLE (DAY 13) - Looking good? I like how she is filling in at such a young age. I'm currently trying to stretch her a tiny bit so that I can begin LST ASAP. *Normal watering given last night.

TRAUMA PATIENT - It's not looking good atm :( She might be heading back to the ER.

IMG_20171204_183321986.jpg

Well that's it for today guys. I saw a journal where a guy had defoled his auto(s). I heard that it's not a good idea to remove leaves from autos but he said he didn't have any issues. His plant(s) look amazing! He said he started cutting on day 33. Anyone have experience with defoling autos? What's your opinion?

I've found the less I messed with them- the better they were. Remove fan leaves that are blocking light for the flowers and remember DDD- you'll be fine. (dead, diseased & dying).

To much can put them in shock. So a little each day as they grow.

You need as much light penetration as possible with those lamps. I would also suggest a reflective ring to help harness the uplight and keep it on the plants.

I found working with CFL and LED lamps cumbersome and a PIA. When for 159.00 I bought a nice little LED fixture that immediately paid dividends.

Now I wish I bought a bigger one LOL.

Hope you dont mind if I hang around for the exciting conclusion of your grow. Everything is looking great looks like your cat approved of the ceiling fan light so you cant go wrong!
