Dusted’s Traditional Hydroponic Grows

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE BUD ROT?

In the beginning, bud rot attacks a plant’s stem, which will appear mushy and gray. As the infection progresses, signs of bud rot are characterized by wilted, yellow and burnt leaves. It’s tricky to spot bud rot ahead of time because the fungus first takes hold inside the plant and works its way to the outside.

As you attempt to catch bud rot, look between the cracks and crevices of suspect buds to determine if the core is rotting. If the core appears soggy and brown, bag the plant for removal and quarantine that area of the room. Next, sample and investigate the other plants to determine if the bud rot has spread elsewhere. If you find other infected plants, follow the same procedure.

Sometimes plants with bud rot will develop a gray webbing or dusty, white spores. Spores are problematic because they easily travel by wind, water and pollinators, which includes you and any grow room workers. To reduce the spread of spores, change into another set of clothes between rooms or wear a dedicated protective suit in each grow room.

Ground up bud rot

I know that there are fungal pathogen spores in my system since I have had stem rot in previous grows. It hasn’t shown up in a couple of grows now that I keep the rocks around the stem dry. No mushy stems anywhere I can find. The damaged bud interior is not mushy but gets hard as it dries

I've never seen bud rot do that so quickly to all the pistils so I'd rule that out for that reason alone. Glancing back at the previous plant pics there are serious leaf issues that I'm assuming you are handling, and whatever is shriveling the leaves could be doing the same thing to the buds.

Powdery mildew will do that to pistils and leaves from the outside in but I don't see any other signs of it so I'm scratching that off the list.

UV could certainly burn the buds (and not just ones on top) so that's a consideration as well.

Day 62 post flip

There haven't been any new buds browning since I put the HPS back up. I am leaving the two brown buds on the plant to see what happens. No bugs, fungal filaments, powdery mildew or anything obvious. Maybe it was UV burn on plants that were getting heat stressed. I was running 1600 W of MH for a week or so. About 10 days or so to go before harvest. I don't flush my plants, but I won't be replenishing the nutrients. Just adding water daily till we are done.

Hey man I think it’s great your able to get them to the finish line with just the bit of damage you have. Despite the issues looks like it’s going to be good harvest. :thumb:
Thanks. I keep wondering if I will ever get a grow where nothing goes wrong. Keep on trying I guess.

Day 68 Post flip - Harvest day

Yesterday I noticed some new buds browning so I figured I should take them down before it gets too bad. Turns out it is bud rot! First time for everything I guess. The expected harvest was going to be this week, depending on trichomes, but this just got thing going a few days early. I cut out the easily accessible bud rot and spent several hours defoliating large leaves. I find easier to remove leaves on the plant vs after chopping. I got the main cola's, plus a number of side branches, cut, trimmed, and hung, so far today. I will try to finish but doubt I can do that much today. My faithful assistant watched the trim leaves fall into the garbage until his tail distracted him.

Question. Is bud rot damaged bud usable? I know I didn't cut out all of the bad buds before hanging the branches. Should I try and find those bad buds and get them out now. That would be difficult since my hanging rack is iffy. It is the support for a 1970's hanging bead door. The beads were gone when I bought the house but I know what it was used for. This is a much better use for it. I will get some pictures of the drying rack once it is full. Trimming hurts my back.

I spent several hours finishing off trimming and hanging the branches. As I got lower and lower on the plants I eventually gave up. I don't defoliate anything from my plants during the grow, so I get a lot of popcorn on the lower branches. In years gone by I would have diligently gotten to every bud but since I don't consume nearly as much as I produce, I threw a bunch of small buds away. I know I could use it to make edibles or hash but I'm lazy.

Also pulled the stems and roots out of the rocks. Flipped the rocks and removed the root mat on the bottom of the buckets. The roots in the drainage area did show some signs of root rot but I think only where they got covered by sediment and turned anaerobic. There sure was a lot of crud in the system that I flushed out. Had to fish out some root mass lodged in some drainage lines. Nothing worse than getting a plugged line toward the end of a grow and having to pull a bucket to access the plug.

I want to let the green leaves that made their way to the floor dry out before vacuuming them up. Then I will give the containment area a quick wash. I do want to get the system circulating again as soon as possible since I noticed a few fungus flies buzzing about. I will wet the rocks down and give them a good dose of bacterial/fungal spores and start to break the reproductive cycle. There is also lots of organic matter that needs to start rotting. During the fallow time I don't adjust the pH, so it is relatively high (7.5) to promote bacterial growth.

Tomorrow I hope to remove the two HID systems and get the Budget LED system up. Still haven't received the S##dsM#n order but I expect it this week. Not sure what I will grow next yet. So many strains, so little time.

I’m thinking of going perpetual instead of a new one every four months. Can the moderators change a thread title?
