Duggan Does Lilly & Laniakea With DBHBB: One Kit, Two Pots, Four Plants

My little humidifier is an evaporative model, so I'm picking up an ultrasonic, filterless model this afternoon. We'll see what impact it has.

I'll be waiting to hear how this goes. Humidity is one of those things I haven't made any attempt to dial in, and I have to say, I can sense Doc shaking his head at my inattentiveness, waiting for me to get serious about this. I'd already determined that my HB kit tent, at the very least, would be closer to the optimal ranges this time out. I hadn't looked at the ultrasonic ones...... Hmmmmm.... Let me go look now.

LMAO...I have 3 big saucers with water in my room right now that get filled every couple days. I put a small one in my cabinet too, but it's a struggle to get it over 50%. I've only been able to do that overnight with lights off. We run our AC like hell this time of year and it just keeps the air so dry.

Last round, my rh was a good 10% higher throughout the run and the plants were MUCH happier. Then I see a dude like Kyle Kushman say (when asked what his last "AHA!" moment was in growing) just this year he's learned the subtle importance of having rh in the right zone.

Kyle Kushman is definitely more famous than I am. I'm glad to know he is starting to learn about the importance of the environment!

I suspect his new "AHA!" learning will lead him to numbers very similar to mine. I've been preaching the paramount importance of environment for years now. Nothing is more important.

Here's the recipe for success:

1. Environment
2. Environment
3. Lighting
4. Environment
5. "nutes"

100% doc, and I know better too. I didn't name-drop for any other reason than 1. I've only paid modest attention to my own rh, and 2. Even someone with the rep and experience of KK can have a revelation of sorts on something as basic as proper rh.

I think people get so paranoid about potential bud rot they cheat to the side of lower humidity...to the detriment of the very plants they're trying to maintain. I think about it like this; As humans we can survive in a range of different temperatures and humidities, but we thrive at a more narrow range. We aren't trying to get our plants to survive. We're trying to get them to thrive. If I want to be comfortable, I know I need to have my AC set to 76f and maintain just under 50% humidity. Additionally, some folks are more acclimated to heat, some more to cold, but the comfort range is still really close to the numbers I like too (outliers aside).

Now to make sure my plants are in their narrow comfort range...temperature AND humidity. lol

If we can adjust the rH and temps by small amounts, any day of the week, without regard to the weather outside the grow room, we've got a good environment.

For me, 45% rh is a cool, dry night. 60% for a hot summer day. I adjust between the two as needed.

Trouble comes when we have rH below 50 and temps above 80.

I have the day off today. Since my veg cabinet is empty, I figured it was a good time to make some much needed improvements. I installed the temp controller and hung two temp/humidity sensors at what would be canopy level. I wanted to verify that the reported temps were accurate.

I mounted a circulation fan at the top, and fixed the way the light hangs so I can get more headroom.

Humidity has been on my mind today. It's abnormally low for summer, 50%. Since I started hanging the sensor directly under the light, I've seen a drop of 10% from ambient. Just simply moving the sensor out from under the light will increase it back to near ambient.

I have a long way to go before I can dial in a "narrow comfort zone" for my plants. I doubt I will ever get there in cabinets. I have to settle for close enough.

I will eventually convert the whole spare bedroom into a flower room. Will be much easier to control the environment, but at a cost. I still cannot find a climate controller that will allow you to plug in both humidifier and dehumidifier for less than $1200-$1500. The $500 controllers require you to manually select which needs to be operated and to plug that unit into the controller. Kind of useless feature if you ask me.

Humidity is turning out to be the hardest variable to automate without throwing a lot of money at it.

I run a humidifier AND a dehum in my room.

The humidifier is hooked up the the controller. It comes on when rH drops.
The dehumidifier is stand alone, with its own setting. If humidity goes up over 60% it kicks on.

Once you play with it a while, you can figure out how to make it all work. Subtle changes in temps also influence rH.

Hey everyone, hope ya's all had an excellent day...gotta love this weather eh...80's with low RH! My kinda day!
Anyhow gotta few pics of the four. Remember, Lilly's back pot....Lanny's front pot. The Lilly's are a week to 10 days older cuz of frying the first seeds ...ya'l know that story!

Have a great night Gang! Oh ya , topped the Lanny's last night . The Lilly back left is the oldest and she was topped a while ago...not too hard to tell eh...that's cool cuz the others will catch her...watch it happen...cheers.:circle-of-love::Namaste:

Mine is within parameters, but only just. My rh is mostly 47-48%, with periods in the low 50's. I need 10%...period

damn, bro... :goodjob:

I've been desperate in the past with shallow pans not cutting it. Wetting a hand towel and leaving one end in the water, draping the rest on or in front of a little fan got some wicking action going and RH up a bit. Desperate measures, not a long term solution.

I'm hip. I'm not in danger, but I'm not ideal either.

El Cheapo Rite-Aid/Walgreens humidifier works.

That's what I had, but mine was kinda shit. It's an evaporative style with a filter etc,. Just not cutting it. I'm going with an ultrasonic unit that's suitable for a room twice the size of mine (roughly 13'x 15'). I almost stopped this eve, but it'll have to wait until Friday.

Now to go scope these update pics...

They look like they transitioned without a skip. They're quite nice.

Gov, Thanks bud, ya ...i believe the DeStress helped with that...but i only gave it at 1/2 strength. They're just little still. The Budmaster is at the very top too. They've had a rough week...but have pulled thru and i'm looking forward to this grow ....a lot! Cheers Gov. and Gang... (and there he goes, for the ice cream bars..)

Say Duggan, what do you think happened to Masonman's upcan? He went from a 1-2 gallon pot to a 20 and it didn't take worth a damn. I started a conversation about it on his old thread, and I know you do this kind of upcan all the time.

Check it out if you will ...

Masonman's - Hi-Brix - Jock Horror - 2016

Mornin Gray...ya with mason there. That plant will be fine. IMO the rootball wasn't developed enough at transplant! I really think it will be OK though....he just has to be patient with it...it'll turn around just as soon as the roots say hello to all that good soil. He's got Doc helping him as well. he will be just fine but ya ...that's what I think bud....you?

My two Lanny's are the same...their rootball wasn't ready for transplanting this time either and they're just kind of sitting there....but I know that will change soon...it just takes a little longer when you transplant a plant that has an underdeveloped root system is all. Cheers pal!:high-five:

I was going to transplant these into 1 gal hard-side pots tomorrow, but I really don't think they're quite ready. This was from a couple days ago.

Hey Gov....I would bud...they look good....slide one out to see how the roots look....if no roots ....leave alone. I really think they are ready though bud! Cheers .
