We once had a bad scare in our area. One winter we got a nasty cold front from the northwest, starting with heavy ice which took down two of the three main feeder lines from the grid. Then it got VERY cold. All the heavy electricity users voluntarily closed down, but it wasn't clear if we'd make it. 100,000+ households without power when it's -30F outside ... a bad bad thing.
After that I thought a nice beefy standby generator with auto transfer switch would be a good investment. I still haven't gotten around to it, but it sure would be some nice peace of mind during some winters.
