Dr. Seeds' Granddaddy Purple: Coco Grow In Mars Hydro Tent Under TSW-2000

Vegging Out, 62 Days after Germination

It's been a quiet week, with rain most of the days. The one day that was suitable for outdoor work, I had to run my wife to the hospital a two hour drive away for her final post-op checkup.

I found The Mega Crop Thread a couple of days ago. It made for some very interesting reading. It seems that signs of a cal/mag deficiency are an indication that the plants want more nutrients. I caved in to their wants, and they are now on 6gm / gal, without any supplemental CALiMAGic. The Mega Crop is formulated for all substrates and growing styles. LED lighting, combined with a drain-to-waste hydroponic system and coco/perlite substrate probably is the most cal/mag hungry way to grow. We'll see over the next week or so how the plants do.

I gave two of the plants a light defoliation and spread their branches out a bit. GDP #2 was not done. It will be up-potted next week. I'll give it a light defoliation a few days later.

Here are the images for this week:

Granddaddy Purple #1: Shield Installed, First STS Applied

Granddaddy Purple STS Shield: Front & Back Views

I used a clear plastic garbage bag hung from plant supports as a shield. Reversing one branch will give me more pollen than I can use. This time I will spray the branch rather than applying the STS with a brush. I'll follow the advice given by @Pennywise, "Spray until the pollen shows." The branch will be sprayed twice a day until Saturday, when I'll flip it, and change to a daily application.

The STS Working Solution I mixed for my previous attempt has started to turn brown. I discarded it and made up a new solution from Parts A & B that were stored in my refrigerator. You can find the instructions for making STS here, in my previous journal.

Late to the show. It will be interesting to watch. I have a similar sized tent (32x32), similar lighting (home made 300 watt strip LED), a closely related strain I'm growing now (if you can trust Leafly) in Purple Urkle, same base nute in Mega Crop, biggest difference being growing style/media since I'm in a soil-less peat mix. I'm going back now to read from the beginning.

Welcome to the show!

A nice journey you have shared along with your grow @Old Salt. I have read alot of journals and people talking about their wells, it's nice to get an understanding of what's involved. "What about the plants you ask?" :laughtwo: your ladies look great. With the STS that creates pollen? Can you pollinate the rest of the same plant you are spraying? Is there a link to this information I'm curious to read about it.

There's links to my references in my previous journal. This link will take you to the correct post. Basically, you can reverse just one branch and use the pollen to get S1 seeds from the same plant, or to cross with other plants regardless of the strain. You can also reverse the entire plant for more pollen.

I just do one branch , because very little goes a very long way. I thought I had failed to reverse my plants during my previous grow. I searched daily for some manly balls, but didn't find any. One day I opened the tent and saw little green bits floating in my run off. It was pollen! I cut the branch off, as only two sacks opened, and tried for more but didn't get any. Those two sacks pollinated the plant with the reversed branch, and the one next to it. I got well over 200 seeds from the pollen of just the two sacks, loose in the tent for only a few hours.

The plant on the right needs to be transplanted into a larger container. Training must continue. Granddaddy Purple #1 has a branch started on STS for sex reversal. The shield was installed to protect the rest of the plant from overspray. I'm in the middle of moving the Mars Hydro 3' X 3' tent into our living space, as the basement will soon be too cold for growing. When that's done the plants will also be moved out of their current home. They must be Canadian Snowbirds, heading for the warmth as soon as it starts getting chilly outside.

Good morning Salty. Beautiful GDP's. One of my favorites. Glad you have the water issues worked out. I have a well down 550 feet and it's a blessing and a curse too. One thing is the over 400ppm of soluble's. Do you run a pressure pump on your ro system? I can only get my ppm to 47 and wonder if a pump will get it down more and produce faster. It trickles now.
Anyway, your journal is very enjoyable, I can't wait to see them grow into sticky beautiful monsters under the TSW 2000.

"There can be only one." Sean Connery as Ramirez from The Highlander.

the Mars Hydro 3' X 3' is not big enough for more than one of these plants. The other two will go into a 2' X 4' X 7' under my COB array.

I've got almost everything done for the water situation. All I need to do is finish putting up the eaves-trough to collect the rain. The rains have come, and the well will be good until next summer, so unless we have a run of good weather, I'll put that off until the spring. We're getting more than an inch (25mm) today.

I'll get back to you on the PPM. I have a booster pump for the RO, but it's not hooked up. I've not needed it to take care of the arsenic. I'll run an extension cord to it. I also have a drain operated booster pump. That doesn't do much to lower the TDS out of the RO.
