Does any one us gaia green products!

So the sacks opened up,just like you said. Now I need to be careful and collect the pollen. I read somewhere you could just put the branches in a clear plastic bag and shake it. Would that both viabke and unviable pollen ? Can anyone tell if this is a photo or a auto ?

I believe there was a comment earlier by someone who used a paper bag, I can't remember.
I just used a large ziplock bag and bent the stem into it and tapped the branch fairly stern, lightly shake it if needed. Or hold it wide open under the sacs and tap.
You have a lot dropped on the leaves too, you can shake those into the bag as well.
I used to do it for a couple of days to catch all the rest that open a little later.
I do not know if that is a photo or auto. Can't help there.

Edit: others may have different methods that work well for them too.

Edit: you may get some of the bits from the sacs in the bag, that's normal.

Dunno if I have done this right. I collected all I could at this point. I don't really see too much. I think there is some on the side of the bag. Maybe the ziplock is too big ? I have but a silica pack in the ziplock and put it in a dry place with no light. I put the plant back in its isolated home with file folders underneath to catch pollen . Hopefully I'm on the right track ?

Ideally you would run your collected material through a screen since the flower material will want to hold onto moisture which will destroy the viability of the pollen. After that, many pollen chuckers will mix in some flour with the dry pollen to help thin it out for later when they spread it.

The file folders should work well. Maybe tap the branches over them each day to help release more, but they're pretty accomplished at spraying that stuff everywhere. Any, it's so light that it will carry on a breeze for miles so definitely turn off any fans in the vicinity.

The pollen flowers have not opened up yet
Check first thing lights on flowers will open & drop yellow powder on the leaves
Use a piece of shiny dark coloured magazine paper folded in a V
Hold under flowers in the morning & lightly tap flowers to drop pollen
Can get pollen for weeks

Remove any green flower pods & mix the yellow powder with the flour, store in cool place

Allow to warm to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation

You are collecting the pollen sacs prematurely, before they have the chance to produce pollen. It is essential to wait until the pollen sacs open up, after which they will begin to disperse pollen.

Thanks. I do understand that. Can you polinate a photo with auto pollen? If so, would the seeds being produced be autos, photos or both ? I can't seem to find that info on the net.
In the first generation, seeds resulting from a cross between a photoperiod plant and an autoflowering plant (or vice versa) will typically produce plants that exhibit faster flowering times while retaining photoperiod characteristics. It is in the F2 generation that you will encounter a mix of both autoflowering and photoperiod plants. From this diverse pool, you can then make your selections and establish your desired breeding path.

Yeah, you have to be sure those sacs are opened up and powder is being dropped. You have a lot of immature sacs in the bag, they weren't ready yet.
Joe had a nice idea on collecting with that folded paper.
But, the important thing is to do it when they are open and ready. ;-) There are still a lot of pollen sacs on there that you will collect from.

Once the plants get close enough to the flowers opening, you can cut off the branches and stick them in a vase of water. Put a mirror or piece of glass under the vase and the pollen will drop off the flowers and be easier to collect.

Alternatively you could put a bunch in a paper bag and shake it around .

The biggest thing is to keep it dry after you collect it since moisture will kill its viability.

10+ years of growing and my stupid ass never once thought of doing this to collect pollen... thank you for this.

As the others have mentioned you jumped the gun. You are collecting the anthers which are the part of the male flower that produces the pollen. There might be some pollen on them but not much. Wait till you can see the pollen itself which will look like dust and then start collecting.

Good idea. Should not be long before some of the pollen will start showing up on the folders.

Royal Queen Seeds, one of the sponsors, has several good web pages on pollen collecting. This is the link to one of them. The first photo will give an example of the pollen that has fallen off the anthers. There is another photo further down showing more pollen.
