DocBud - New Room - Super Soil - Etc

Re: DocBud - New Room - Super Soil - Etc.

Hey Doc, I've been reading journals on the site for a few months now, you're the first one to inspire me enough to create a username so I can post my appreciation for the knowledge you and others here pass on. If all goes as planned for me I'll be starting my very first grow within a month. I feel like I've learned soo much from everyone here that I'm already looking forward to a first and successful grow. Keep up the good work.

Hey Doc,

Here's a seldom talked about subject;
Fans on the plants.
We have a 16 inch osculating stand fan pointing at them. And an 8 inch clamp in front and above pointing down. I know it's just moving air around what ever the temp is and not really cooling anything.
One of those double window fans sucking air out of the room.
The temps are still around 85.
The temps outside are very rare for my neck of the woods. mid 80's to low 90's almost every day for a month so far.

We plan on venting a duct from the house AC into the room eventually, but for now we are trying to deal with the heat issue with fans.

Question is; is there such a thing as to much air being blown over the plants?

Re: DocBud - New Room - Super Soil - Etc.

hey Hash im not the doc but i thought i might throw in my two cents.
Fans arnt just for the cooling effect. they help the air to circulate keeping the room at an even Mixture of Co2 to o2.
when the plant uses Co2 it generates O2 that essentially will "sit" on the leaf. when this builds up less O2 is able to be produced. a fan helps to pull the o2 off of the leave allowing it to continue production.

the other reason is to help in the strengthening of the stock.
if the fans arnt pushing the plant constantly to the ground than i would think it is fine
there should always be a good breeze in your room!

hope this helps with your answer. im sure doc will have more input!

Re: DocBud - New Room - Super Soil - Etc.

Air exchange over the buds also removes moisture and stagnant air helping to prevent rot and mold.

Re: DocBud - New Room - Super Soil - Etc.

hey everyone.....I'm back in town. I'll get some pics up tomorrow probably.

It's been a literal flurry of activity lately, but I now have 2 professional grade flowering rooms.....14x12, 9 foot ceilings, AC, all the trimmings. Pics coming!

As for blowing too much air on a plant....yes, there is such a thing.

Look at trees and brush that grows in very windy areas.....they are stunted and small.

You want the fans to gently shake the leaves of the plants. Once a week if you want to give them a windstorm, that should suffice.....but really you only need to keep air moving around the plants.

Leaves gently moving is all that is required.

Re: DocBud - New Room - Super Soil - Etc.

Doc been reading your journals and wanted to say thank you for all you have given to everyone here.

I have a question if you don't mind. I have tried Hempy buckets with perlite and oc+, I find that the res gets acidic during flowering. I also use RO water.

I was wondering what your take would be on treating it more like a soil grow as far as PH levels? Say keeping it around 6.5 instead of the 5.8 to 6.2 range.

How do you know the res is acidic? In other words, how did you test it?

OC+ is not a buffer, but it is pH neutral.....I tested it myself before trying it in perlite. What else are you using in your water besides straight RO?

You might try mixing a bit of tap water in with the RO, as the salts and ions in the tap will stabilize the pH.

How are the plants growing?

I have checked the runoff after watering with PH 6 RO water 5 and 10ml/gal cal/mag. PH of runoff was 5.4 to 5.6.

As far as adding tap I think that is not a good idea in my case my TA is really high.

The clones I did looked great in veg. Then once flowering got into about the fourth week they started getting what looked like a cal/mag def. I tried to up the cal/mag to 10ml/ per gal. It didn't help growth was stunted bad. I have a link to my new grow in my sig, trying seeds this time and still using perlite and oc+.

Thanks for the help Doc.:Namaste:

Well, let's think this through......

Perlite.....pH neutral
RO.....can't even measure pH.....no ions, no buffer
OC+.....pH neutral
Cal/mag......here's your problem! (unless you're using other stuff too?)

I'll bet your Calmag is quite acidic....what's in it?

If it were me, I'd add tap water till you get a TA of about 60. Then pH down to 6.

Easy! ;)

I use botanicare cal/mag. I have tried with Snow Storm Ultra as well same results. So I get this correct RO + tap TA around 60 PH 6 no cal/mag.
I have tried this as well my first try I did not have cal/mag staarted to show signs of def so I started to add the cal/mag. I don't know I'm at a loss.

Just try it and add 5ml of calmag. What I'm trying to do is get your feed water buffered a bit to keep the pH steady.

Botanicare CalMag is on the acid side a bit.....Calcium Nitrate. Great stuff, but often fed with other hydro nutes that would stabilize pH a great deal.

I see where you are coming from. My only problem is I'm limited to just usin RO water. My city water supply comes from six different wells.

Hmmm.......in that case, try adding some Earth Juice Microblast or some other salt/ion solution to your feed water. You need more PPM in order to stablize pH.

On another note:

Here are some pics of the new rooms, prior to finishing the interior.

14x12 with 9 foot cielings. Insulated top and sides with R13. There are 4 holes from 8 inch ducting in the roof, roofs are sturdy enough to walk on, store stuff, etc. The interior is visqueen plastic, in place for airtightness. I'll staple Panda film up tomorrow or Tuesday.

Each room has 60 amps of 220 single phase, and 40 amps of 110 single phase. More than enough power to run everything and then some....just the way I like it.

I'm using a "window" mount AC unit that is designed to cool a 400 sq ft space....but the rooms are only 164 sq ft. They have an auto start function, so I can run the AC unit on full blast, hooked up to my climate controller.

I'lll have C02.....2 trays that drain to waste.....and two 1000 watt lights on movers to cover each tray. One is 4x8, the other is 4x6. Both banks of lights will be air cooled with outside air only, with two 645 cfm fans pushing air through. There will also be a fresh air intake and exhaust with carbon filter......the usual stuff.

I'm running some tests with the lights on, but not cooled, in order to see how the AC handles it.

The extra volume from the high ceilings is really nice.....won't get too hot even if the AC takes a dive.

I should have plants under lights this week. I won't be growing large numbers of plants....probably keep things well under the limit on my license.....but I do hope to make more progress towards quality....as usual.

I like! you will be growing monsters in there in NO TIME!

Re: DocBud - New Room - Super Soil - Etc.

As for the hempy buckets and the cal/mag issue....Floranova is ment to be used with ro water and has all the cal/mag needed. No need for cal/mag when useing floranova bloom or grow.

Cona....just throwin it out there.

2 flower rooms...how killer are you mad. You gonna start makin seeds? Sooo many hybrids....so little time on earth. I wish I could have more room. I am takeing on another patient for the first time soon and I will be able to do 15 more plents if needed. I cant see myself needing 15 more though...

Re: DocBud - New Room - Super Soil - Etc.

Doc thanks again for all the help. Sorry for getting so :offtopic: in your thread. Cona thanks for the input as well.

Doc your rooms look great.

Re: DocBud - New Room - Super Soil - Etc.

That looks fantastic Doc. Envy doesn't begin to describe it - I'm flat out jealous! :) Nice work, can't wait to see it in action. :thumb:
