Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Thanks Doc, The only reason I asked is because in the summer my cellar is around 90 most the time. Had I know I would run the risk of pathogens I would have made an area ready that better suited the soil. I am very worried all my soil is now ruined. It has been down there for months, and the last two months its been around 90 or warmer down there...

My room is 86 degrees, but the barrel is 84

Hello knowledgeable folks, I have a question regarding PM and growing in the kit. When reading about the kit it says the high brix soil naturally prevents pests, does this include powdery mildew prevention as well? I only ask because it became a problem during the last 3 weeks of my previous grow even though there was plenty of airflow, and my rh was within 30-45. I ended up harvesting early, and doing a bud wash. Anyways, the entire growing environment has been sterilized and I want to prevent this from happening again. Thanks!

Powdery mildew/mold is a systemic infection and once infected it can really only be "controlled" through the use of a sulfur burner and improved environmental conditions. If you've cleaned the grow area, I would also recommend doing a sulfur burn as well as eliminating any leftover plants/clones that were present at the time of infection. Even if they do not show signs now, they very likely will in the flower cycle. Fresh, unaffected clones and/or new plants from seed are the best way to proceed after cleaning and sulfur burning.

High Brix growing is a fantastic way of ensuring the best, healthiest plants, but does not eliminate completely the possibility of bug infestations nor PM.

And that is the REAL truth... unfortunately there are bugs, which actually prefer HB plants. There are also fungi and viruses that don't care much how much sugars plants produce, they'll just attack if environment allows it. PM usually pops up when RH is 60% and higher, but it may infest weak plants even if it's lower. Spores live forever and they are everywhere, so you have to clean your room completely and bring down RH ASAP.

High Brix plants are much more resistant to insects and molds....but that doesn't mean you never get either. I haven't had PM in many years. I know several HB growers who haven't had mites for years. All of us report less insect pressure and many of us have battle severe infestations without miticides and have won.....myself included.

As for your situation, if your RH is 30-45 your plants won't be very healthy and won't have good pest and disease resistance, because they simply can't grow well in that arid of a climate.

We do not create an environment to prevent PM....we create an environment to maximize plant health. Hot and dry is bad for PM....and cannabis. It's always best to optimize plant health and not worry about diseases. You can fight the pests much better with super healthy plants.

As for PM....easy fix. Sulfur vape. One and done.

Can we expand on the over temp soil fix ? I'm at least 2 weeks away from an up pot from 1 to 7 gallon's (waiting for the flower room to open up) . The soil has been cooking in the barn for several months , and temps have been in the 90's for several weeks .
Soil looks and smells normal .... Any indicators to look for ?

Threw some walls up past few hours, installed an ac, my dirt is now 78 degrees

Damn man... wish I could do that... Great job remedying that situation. I'll have a harder time with it. I used my infrared thermometer and it said 92 at the upper area of the bin and 87 at the lower end... Gotta get it cooled off I guess. Still waiting for Doc to chime in on this. I know you're busy Doc, its all good. I just dont wanna have to toss 200 dollars worth of material.

Thanks Doc, I thought I was doing a good thing with keeping the humidity at that level. What you're saying makes much more sense though. I think there will be some sulfer getting vaped in my future. I know every plant is different, but what is your optimal RH level doc?

Yea , my big room was 86. I already had materials, I need to save up and get a mini-split unit next spring. I had another portable ac I hooked up.

I didn't want to waste $200 either.

Ahah, nice Gov, I'm chasing ya! Yesterday hit week 3 so I have a GE in a few days and then it's my cat time. How far from bloom are you?

That's day 21. They looked like they were in the cat window 2-3 days ago, but I wanted to let them go those few more days to keep my timing with the watering regimen.

Gotcha. My water schedule is making me hold off on cat for a min. Just had trans drench 4 days ago, plain water yesterday. I want that GE before cat. Luckily pots are drying out fast. A long wait I will not have.

Just a heads up I added 2 of those temp monitors, the ones with the reading sensor on the long cord type.
Ran the cords into the bin, 1 at bottom and 1 at top. Just a glance and I know I am withing limits. Lucky
for me its been steady between 72 and 78.

Also noticed since I had to open the bin the Condensation on the lid had stopped, soil was still moist.
I added a little more RO and will check again in a few days.

QUESTION should there always be condensation on the lid of the bin ?

EDIT Something just occurred to me, I could put the temp
sensor Inside my pot at/near The center of the bottom when I up pot and will be able to know
the temp at the roots
