Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

They are based on weight; grams, lbs, kilograms...per acre.

As for the other questions, you've got me stumped. I don't know what "moist" components are either.

Could you please post your questions from a different angle so I can understand?

So. say you want

1800 kg Calcium,
100 kg Phosphorus,
100 kg potassium, and
257 kg Magnesium (~1800/7)

in the amended soil.

If I was adding all my calcium in the form of pure calcium carbonate, would I need

1800 kg × ((40.1 g/mol)/(100.1 g/mol))
= 4493 kg of CaCO3?

ie.100.1 kg CaCO3 contains 40.1 kg Calcium, 12 kg Carbon, and 48 kg oxygen.

As for the moisture part of my question, I ran into it with an earthworm casting question.

Could someone please estimate the volume of a 30 lb. bag of worm castings. Mine was sold by volume. I put 3 * 3 litre bags in a half batch of Promix / ammendment. :thanks:

Your blend calls for 20-40 lbs of EWC

The stuff I bought came in litres

So I asked in this thread what people's weights and volumes of their castings. I got a lot of responses that same day.

BrixKlinger rang in with a rule of thumb he had on hand,
stole this from somewheres, sounds like it puts you pretty close in the neighborhood. I may go for a couple more a them 3 litre bags.
Available in 3 Sizes:
1 Gallon - 7 lbs
1/2 Cubic Foot - 24 lbs
1 Cubic Foot - 48 lbs

48 lb/cub.ft
x 1 cub. ft / 28.3 litre
~ 1.7 lb/litre
~ 5 lb / 3 litre bag

I had guessed about 3 lb for my bags and I called the supplier and they confirmed my estimate.

3 lb/bag = 1lb/litre ~ 28 lb/cubic ft.

Graytail said his 30 lb bag of wiggle worm was 3700 cubic inches,

3700 in^3 /(12*12*12)in^3/ft^3
=2.14 ft^3

30lb bag / 2.14 ft^3
= 14 lb / ft^3

Quite the range of answers :laughtwo::blunt:

And flowerfarmer provided the obvious answer:

I would say it depends a lot on the moisture content of the ewc.

So when you want say 10 % of a soil component, and the components contain varying amounts of moisture, there can be different interpretations of how much to add.

Sorry if I'm making a simple matter seem complicated, but the chemist in me likes to nail these things down.

I don't know about you but I'm about to roll up a fat bat then go stare at my little plants for an hour before crashing ... :peace::passitleft:

Graytail said his 30 lb bag of wiggle worm was 3700 cubic inches,

That's a lotta cubic inches! If I said that, it was dumb of me. :cheesygrinsmiley: 10x10x37 inches??

At some point I measured - memories are vague now - but I estimate one pound per 16 ounce drink cup, so I add 3 cupfulls (3 pounds) per 6 gallon pot.
:Namaste:

Sorry Graytail! That answer came from Scrubby. I got confused because you answered another soil mixing question nearby.

The volume of a 30 lb bag of wiggle worm is 3700 ^3"

It doesn't seem so big if its a cube. just over 2 ft/side. [ edit: 3700 cubic Inched Is just over 15"/side ... shoulda gone to bed] But yeah, that seems like a very big bag!

Hey Doc, my rare darkness are getting huge and theyre still in 1 gal pots for another 3 weeks. Is there something I can do to make sure the soil dont run out of juice before I transplant and flip?

No room to up-can before the flip?

You might be over thinking things just a bit. :Namaste: The fat one is a good idea!

Here's how it works for me:

1. Send soil to lab
2. Add what lab says to add.
3. Wait....then plant.

Just got some pics.

Colombian 2 days after Cat Drench. Twisted leaves have untwisted. Lot's of pistilate growth, and visible resin! Oh man....fingers crossed.

Great plant, she probably won't produce much and she won't be big on resin but this smoke will beat all these Cali "sativas" with one punch... I bet :tokin: Got some Colombian and Mexican going myself this season, high hopes :thumb:

Which one's ya got?

BTW, what's the latitude of your garden?

I'm not so sure about the lack of resin. I have a feeling we'll see some. Here in Cali we don't have many Sativas. It's all about hybrids. Only a few of us whackjobs grow the Sativas. They take twice as long, yield half as much (sometimes) and often the bag appeal doesn't look like hydro nugs.....in other words, the market is such that only people like us grow them!

But everyone who tries 'em, loves 'em.

Word, Doc :tokin:

I'm at 45N, and I got Colombian Punto Roja and Jarillo de Sinaloa, both from Cannabiogen.
Here just outplanted.

You put them in shackles? :cheesygrinsmiley:
It must keep them from getting away.

Ah chain gang they called it :laughtwo::laughtwo:
They're copper wedlocks against snails.
They won't come near, and it's the worst critter here next to aphids, rarely bud worms :tokin:

I started to use pieces of chain link fence when I grew in the deep woods of Kentucky, to keep Deer Badgers and other omnivores and herbivores away. They get freaked out stepping on the metal and back up.
