Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

I think u are gonna want closer to 73% of that second small bale.

3.8 - 2.2 = 1.6

if my maths are correct.

Exactly right!
I hadn't done the calculation. I was just guesstimating and was WAY off. Thanks!
Additional bale purchased. Mixing to commence after a pipe and a beer. :Hookah:

simplicity huh. thats confusing as hell to me so lets mix it up :D

i didn't fuck with roots or trans in my mix, just water, ammendment, ewc and dirt.

u cray cray or me is (i guess both!)

Nah man, neither. I was only saying that since the roots! not only has minerals, but some myco too it might help populate the herd and compensate for the extra .6 cu/ft of Promix.

Fixed. :laughtwo:

They are indeed correct. But for simplicity, I'd probably mix in all of the second bale and add a little extra roots, and for the water, I'd use 2-3 gals of 1/4 trans. in my line of thinking anyway. Maybe opt for the high side of the recommended EWC too...40lbs minimum.

Great idea! I have 38 lb of EWC in it and I have some myco kicking around.

This cost more, but it will squeeze blood from a rock.

I've seen pliers and Vice-Grips with a pair of small metal plates (like the knock-out slugs from a metal electrical box).
Seems like sheet metal welding pliers or clamp might be the hot setup. If you have a Harbor Freight nearby, you can get them of $6 - $9 and they go on sale all the time for less. I'd post a link, but don't know if that is considered cool on this forum.

Doc and other High-Brixers, just received my refractometer and I'm attempting to take some readings. I've searched this and other threads and just can't quite find the right search term to get what I need. What I'm looking for is how to get a sampling (of juice). I tried a mortar and pestle and a garlic press without much luck. Does anyone have a sure-fire method? Thx.

EDIT: I just saw that any2cards just ask the same question! How much plant material is needed, maybe that's my problem....

I dont do it anymore but my method was to wait until the plant has a few leaves to spare. Id pick off a few healthy turgid leaves from more than one location on the plant. If youve been foliaring they need to be rinsed and dried. wash and rinse your hands thoroughly first. Crush em up thoroughly in very clean and dry mortar and pestle. place that paste between two spoons and squeeze out a drop or two onto the clean glass field of the refractometer.

GT still does a lot of measuring. he will likely chime in.

I do just fine with a smallish 5-bladed fan. That gets me enough for 2 or more drops of juice. You can do with just a single drop, but you might get a distorted (dry) reading. I always take two readings from a leaf to be sure. It's a little tricky getting the crush process down - you want two very flat unyielding surfaces, so that the cell walls will be crushed and the juice has nowhere to go except to drip out. The tinner's visegrips look great - never tried 'em - but a vicegrips and a couple thick flat pieces of metal will work as well. Here are a couple threads to check out:

It gives me confidence when I see experienced growers like yourself take an interest. I just run a little 4x4. :Namaste:

Thanks backatcha!

Hey doc, I'm doing 5 20 gal under 2 400w hps. What do you recommend I do if I want to use your kit. I will either put 5 8 week veg plants or 10 4 week veg plants, 2 per 20 gal. How would I go about vegging 8 weeks if I go that route? Can they stay in 1 gal for 8weeks or should I transplant again before final container?

I'm not totally following your question(s) but you can extend veg time by dunking the plants, which I often have to do daily before final transplant.

You might be able to do this in 1 gallons, but you'll be dunking daily and if you miss a day you'll have a wilted plant.....on the other hand your root ball will be massive and after scoring your root development will be excellent. You might want to use 2 gallon pots for a longer veg time.

4 are not high brix.

Hopefully, the 4 small ones are the HB plants. If you follow the wet/dry watering style I recommend you'll have all kinds of roots, a very thick stem and not quite as much leaves as the FFOF version.

This will develop into a very strong plant that needs less support, grows differently and has different bud structure. You'll definitely want the "salty" drench for this strain. I seem to recall you ordering some?

Thanks guys. I took my first readings yesterday before reading this, so I only did one reading per leaf(s).

My process:

Took four leaves (who knew you could do it with just one!? LOL!) midway up the plant from different colas. Used VonDs method with mortar and pestle and two spoons, (rep) and got two good drops of juice for each plant. Followed procedure and did one plant at a time, cleaned, sterilized, etc.

I did not get a clear cut line, but definitely a demarkation between the "blue" and "white".

Plants are in HB soil. Day 37 of 12/12 Have had both Cat drenches and will get energy tomorrow or Thurs.

Pineapple Trainwreck - 13-14 range
Gold Leaf - 12-13 range

Next testing with be with one leaf, tested at least twice. Other suggestions?

I highly recommend doing it exactly the same way, every single time. That's the only way to get consistent readings.

Your numbers are good! You'll see very good growth and vigor with those numbers.

Agree, I do two month veg on most of my plants and I use 3gal air pots which hold 2gal of soil. Life is just much easier with slightly bigger pots. I think anything smaller would be a serious pita after the first month :thumb:

LMAO...and I'm flowering 5 plants in 1 gal pots this round too...and it kinda sucks. They were supposed to be seed plants, but it didn't work out that way. One of them was sprayed with CS for a month and a half on the bottom half so that won't be useable, but the rest all have fist-sized colas on them so that part is cool.
