Decoding The Holy Grail: Terpene & Cannabinoid Retention: Decarb to Extraction

Gotta take a break for a while. I'll let this digest and post later on my experience with my initial order of Limonene and Alpha-Pinene.

Not myrcene? Steep Hill Labs says that "myrcene levels in cannabis above 0.5% result in the well known ‘couch lock’ effect of classic Indica strains of cannabis; Sativa strains normally contain less than 0.5% β-Myrcene," so I have always thought that would be the one I'd want to investigate first.

Why would you want your sativas to put you to sleep? :battingeyelashes:

Steam fractional distillation is one of the commercial extraction methods for terpenes. As you say, reclamation without detriment with home available processes would be questionable and most likely impossible. FWIW, I have some information and recent positive experience with terpene isolates I'd be glad to share if there's interest. I feel I've been off topic and possibly interrupted the agenda here as well as a sister thread and don't want to be guilty a second time.

This thread is mine. You won't be going off topic. This is what we're discussing, so I think it's relevant.

The other thread was a misunderstanding on KR's part. You weren't out of turn there either. :battingeyelashes:

Myrcene and linalool are my next target when I get back home in November. This first experiment was my search for a ray of sunshine for daytime use.

Thanx, SweetSue. I truly appreciate the way that was handled on your and KR's part.

So now for page two.

I found most of the more poplar profiles from True Terpene were under $20 per ounce, some a bit pricier. The limonene and alpha pinene came to only $25. I was a bit taken aback, however, by the $15 shipping charge. The majority of the cost turned out to be in the required packaging for flammable material.

When I opened the limonene, I was greeted with an instant and overwhelming aroma of citrus. I added 3 drops to my tincture bottle containing 20-25 ml. That's slightly less than the recommended minimum mixture ratio. I added my normal dose to my coffee without great expectations. To my surprise, however, the effect had a definite added dimension to it. I had a heady, buzzy feeling with a bit of a body rush that I don't usually experience. It left me a little edgy and I'd stop short of saying it was a pleasant enhancement to my tincture.

The next day I added an additional 3 drops of the alpha pinene to the same mixture. When I had my morning wake up coffee, I found this mixture most rewarding. A very relaxed feeling with a definite elevated mood. I don't think I'd call it energetic but motivational would probably be a more appropriate description. I found myself spontaneously taking care of small chores that I would have normally passed up.
I think this is probably going to be a good mixture for dealing with depression and anxiety.

In summation, I'll give Terpene isolates a definite two big :thumb::thumb: albeit potentially a little confusing with all the options available. There's a company that's marketing premixed solutions to mimic specific strains. Possibly a better option for some but at $25 per 2ml that works out to $375 per ounce as compared to $11-20 per ounce for individual profiles.

Hope you'll find this helpful.

Thanks BCDD! That's exactly the kind of test I was thinking of with myrcene.

I would love to see a blinded test (which reminds me of Ram Das's story about giving a bunch of students either a placebo or LSD and one kid saying "I think maybe I feel something" and another bursting through the door shouting, "I see God!") ;)

Re: Decoding The Holy Grail: Terpene & Cannabinoid Retention - Decarb to Extraction

Just saw we can convert Excel to Google sheet in Google, and export a Google to Excel, so me and @Canyon don't need to learn.....much....lol

I'll edjumacte myself in the am on it and convert the files

Gunna check with Teddy to be sure it's all ok to link to it...

I must confess that I don't know that much about the individual terpenes other than what is likely to be on the basic "good for this" treatment chart. I just have not done the reading.

While I am working up a more complete terpene worksheet I may as well add in what I can find from other charts.

SweetSue, Scientific, Bucudinkydow, and most here know more than I do about what effects they have and what to look for in strains. There should be some way to work what they know into table form.

Does anyone know how to get things like delta 8 into a symbol?

Ever the skeptic, and at the risk of offending any true believers, I have to say that I don't think anyone really knows with certainty what individual terpenes do or do not do. Even though the Leafly contractors are cranking out charts and articles, at this point it's all empirical evidence at best and more likely (IMHO) mostly folklore and the placebo effect. We may have theories and suspicions, but at this point we simply do not know.

I think that's just working way too hard, but if you're feeling really motivated, you can probably find Δ's and such on a Unicode symbol chart, or just Google, "unicode symbol for <whatever>"

This is a test .... its a link to a Google sheet I made this am.

Test Sheet - Simple Extraction Calculation

Can someone report back on if they can get to it ok?

It may violate site rules so Im going to report it and ask.

Ive created a sample sheet in post 734. My curious brain needed to see what was involved. Ive reported the post to seek an opinion of site rules. I can see where it could be a problem because of what could be buried in a document.

Canyon etal its pretty easy. If its ok to do this, I can post a summary of how it was done.

When I clicked the link, I got a screen saying that I needed to request access. I clicked the link, but if accessing the spreadsheet means sharing email addresses, that's not going to be popular in places where the herb is illegal...

Better would be just to make it accessible to all, I think.

Here's what the Google help file says (I added the red color):
Get permission to open a file
  1. Open the file.
  2. On the "You need permission" page, click Request access.
  3. The owner of the file will get an email asking for approval. After they approve your request, you'll get an email.

I'm guessing that that email will have my email address in it, which kinda blows my cover...

Lets see what the Mods say, Then Ill explore it Further

Its easy to create a google or yahoo email for under the radar if needed

At the collaborative project I worked on, we made the spreadsheet available to everyone without having to ask for permission. There was no problem--no vandalism or anything.
