Dark Devil Auto: A Community Grow Record

If your goal is to produce a few (hundred) seeds, I'm thinking they'll start showing signs of flowering much quicker in a small container than, for example, a large DWC reservoir with lots of root space (and active aeration). @Rifleman 's experience seems to be along those lines, I think, with longer flowering periods in DWC, and larger plants, of course. Although I don't remember offhand when flowering started in them. But think about what "everyone" always says
about leaving young autos in their small initial containers too long, "That's going to hurt you, because it'll start flowering before it's gotten very big."

Or something like that, IDFK, lol.

Thanks TS. No, my goal is much more modest. I'd be happy with 10 viable seeds - doing the exercise just for the learning experience.

I believe what you say about shocking an auto, and so I have started it in its one and only pot - a two gallon bucket with perlite. No transplant to follow. However, I don't think that container size influences when an auto flowers. I thought it was a function of time, rather than becoming rootbound. @Pennywise (I think it was him) posted some interesting information on that on another thread, but I can't find it right now.

But thanks for the suggestions.

There is research suggesting that a virus causes the seedlings to stall out. It seems like certain autos tend to carry the virus. some are worse than others, maybe a thing with ruderalis populations.

That is interesting, I have not heard of that. would that be a actual virus or genetic aberration ?

I'm not real clear on it, myself. I'm still an "auto newbie," lol. For the "ruderalis part," I thought to check to see what the climate and light-hours of the region where it comes from is. Short, long-day Summers. But I haven't drawn any conclusions. I was initially wondering if it might be useful to start the plants under less hours of light per day and work up to 18 or 20. But they might already have long days there before the temperatures warm enough for germination, IDK.

I hadn't read that, and now you've got me curious. Have a source link or two (if not, I can do a web-search)?

I have the impression that it's pretty windy most of the time in Siberia, and had thought this might have influenced smaller plants through natural selection, but that was just a guess.

I usually see sex on the DDA around day 21. That is when I put a pipe cleaner around a stem at the spot I want to spray with CS. I spray 1 squirt once a day for about 21 days, or until I see pollen sacs.

Then sit back and wait. If you don't remove the sprayed stem you will get thousands of seeds. If you take it out after a week or two you'll get much less.

Good luck.

Thanks Rifleman! DAY 21 for pistils is a lot earlier than I was expecting, so I will keep an eye on her as that gets closer. I like the pipe cleaner marker idea. I don't want thousands of seeds! :) I was thinking that I would remove the plant from others before the pollen is released.

If I am successful, I was also thinking about storing some pollen, for future projects. I understand that it can be mixed with a little flour and frozen in a small airtight container? Still a ways off before that is a reality, though!

Have a great day, thanks.

My understanding is it's an active virus.

If you can, I’d appreciate a link to anything on this. I haven’t found the right keywords to find it myself.

Oh no, those are dried. 13.3 ounces of ready-to-smoke bud. I don't weigh wet flower.

BOOM! Way to go Brix! :high-five: Those Octopots are rocking!

I did a quick search, too, after my request for a source link was ignored (probably just got missed). I didn't find anything, either.

There doesn't seem to be anything here:

...although relying on Wikipedia for knowledge can sometimes be unwise. I read its article on Jefferson Davis recently, and saw that a prominent college had offered him a position. Said college wasn't built until two years after he died  .

Here’s one that lists Virus being a factor in stunting but doesn’t give a lot of details.

There is more in there TS, Look at viruses near the bottom of page. looking further into cucumber virus shows it contaminates via seed and more

Yeah, but when I read the corresponding article on cucumber mosaic virus, the described symptoms didn't strike me as being what has been posited here for cannabis.

CMV seems very likely to produce obvious symptoms that would point to a sick plant, not merely one that is smaller and/or growing slower than one would otherwise expect.

Many, probably most plant viruses can be transmitted to the next generation though the seed. If you think of them as machines, they're actually pretty good designs. Other things can be conveyed to the next generation, too. I have read that russet mites can "hitch a ride" on cannabis seeds, even managing to overwinter on them. This might help explain why they have spread at the rate that they have.

One of the downsides of a "global community."

Just got my DDA seeds, I'm almost halfway through my first grow (all autoflowers) and next run will be in Doc bud's kit which is already cooking. Ive got quite a selection of auto and regular genetics but these Dark Devils are calling to me lol.

@Knifemaker420 I'd say to plant that seed on the left in the photo. Will you have a journal following your DDA grow? If so please send me a quick note to let me know it's up and running.

Once my current grow is done I'm thinking about doing an autoflower perpetual Journal. My 2x4 tent is only big enough for 2 plants at a time so I'll grow 2 then when they are almost ready to harvest Ill pop new ones. The kit soil is supposed to be enough for 6 plants in 7-10gal pots so I'll be able to rotate the soil and always have a batch growing, a batch ready and a batch cooking.
I will also post my DDA progress here as well.
Have a knife day
