Cottage 420's Organic Perpetual Indoor Garden

Drive-by

Mister BBrown,,, you do like them Sequoia type trees.........

GL and Keepem Green

Sativa FTMFW - I don't wanna grow em outside I don't have a tall enough ladder.

Nothing to report here.... still waiting to sex a few which probably means I've up-potted and put into flower a few males.

Fool me once shame of you, fool me 10 times shame on me.
I won't get fooled again.....I'm hoping.

They taking their good old time as expected. I need a break from trimming so I'm going with a longer-ish running Sativa thanks to @NoobyMacDooby.

Sitting here waiting for friends to empty stash bags and get back to me.

I feel ya on the trimming brother. I finished number 2 yesterday and started on number 3 today. I'll finish it tomorrow and then get a few days off before the last 3 are ready. Gotta turn that tent over!! Good luck with the Sativa run, I'll be watching!!

Hey Bob- wondering if you could help me with soil mix info. I’m giving another kick at the can re ‘searching for organic soil amendments in Canada’. This is sort of an annual event for me. New stores pop up every year so it’s getting easier to find stuff. Ordering from the US to my spot isn’t an option.

I’ve seen you post this Coots recipe and I think this is sort of what you’re still using right?

“Coots Mix:

Acadian Kelp Meal @ 1/2 Cup per cubic foot

Neem Cake and Karanja Cake 50/50 Mix @ 1/2 to 1 cup per cubic foot

Crustacean Meal @ 1/2 Cup per cubic foot

Malted Barley @ 1 Cup Per Cubic Foot (ground fine in a coffee grinder)

Gypsum Dust @ 1 Cup Per Cubic Foot

Brix Blend Basalt @ 1 Cup Per Cubic Foot

Glacial Rock Dust @ 1 Cup Per Cubic Foot

Oyster Flour @ 1 Cup Per Cubic Foot”

The rock dust is expensive for shipping but it’s out there. At this point I can find or make/source locally everything on that list. Even finally found neem.

Everything except - the Karanja Cake.

Do I really need that karanja stuff or could I use extra neem cake or sub something else?

Thanks!

DM me you address I can send you some Karanja. You dont need a lot a few cups is all.

Yes still running Coots.

Indoors outdoors in the raised beds in the holes and containers.

Rock dust should be able to find it somewhat locally check to see if you have a local stone cutting shop.. they fer sure collect it but depends if they contaminate it with glues and what not. Just another suggesting for sourcing it.

I used to work at a granite shop and several old timer gardeners were coming around asking for the dust that of course we had to get rid of.

There is no stone-working place here, other than some people working in slate- which I can easily find and make dust out of myself as the stuff is pretty soft.

I also have some glacial rock dust- saw a bag in a store years ago and grabbed it.

Basalt I’d have to order, and gypsum I have a tiny bit of but would order more. But that’s totally fine and it is available. Gaia Green sells it now among others.

I’ll PM you later and see if it’s doable. That’s very nice of you to offer.

BB,

I am very interested in using your grow mix but I have seen several places that the minimum pot size should be at least 7 gals when using the "Coots mix". I grow in a cabinet and my max pot size is 1 gal. What are the characteristics of the mix that requires larger quantities and are there adjustments that can be made for smaller pots?

What adjustments would you make, either in mix, or watering or whatever to adapt your organic practices to a smaller grow?

I've read the entire thread hoping someone had already asked but didn't see it addressed.

Hi Azi - seeing as I’m here I’ll say hi and welcome to 420 Magazine :green_heart: :welcome:

And one response to your question would be that with living soils, it’s more difficult to sustain a soil microlife community in smaller pots.
That said, in a good living soil (that I purchased) I have managed to grow sea-of-green worthy single-cola plants in 1gal containers. I even did 2in1 a couple of times. I think bobrown does similar with his many DDAs in Smaller pots. So it’s not impossible, but it’s not a ‘given’ that it will work. And certainly not as easy as LOS in a bigger pot!

:Namaste:

Thanks, Amy.

I water with fresh worm castings each time so am hoping maybe that will help re-populate the herd if it dies off, although I've read that they just go dormant if/when the soil dries out. But, I'm fairly new to this organic growing thing so pretty much groping in the dark.

I know The Rev’s supersoil recipes are supposed to suit all size pots, even small. I think it’s that one anyway.
That's interesting Amy, I didn't realise that. I think Stoneotter's been doing well with Rev's mix, I should take a stickybeak at that.
I started off with soil loosely based on Subcool's recipe and since then have been more into Coot's mix for stuff like crustacean meal and malted barley. Actually any day now when flowering kicks off I'm going sprinkle a cup of Malted Barley over my plant soil and top it with some worm castings and pea straw mulch. I remember reading Bob posting of how he found by adding malted barley in flowering it seemed to help speed it up and add frostiness to the buds.

mostly it’s just the small size of the that’s a challenge to keep microbially charged, so to speak :D.

Thanks, Amy. I searched the site for TheRevs recipe and didn't find anything. Can you point me while I wait for Bob to respond?

He’s author of an excellent book called True Living Irganics and there’s lots in there. But more easily you can make contact with @StoneOtter and @Emilya here who are both successful users of his recipes. There are likely others. But drop into either of their current journals and ask. I’m sure either or both of them will be able and happy to point you in the right direction.

You might also have more luck on the forum if you search for “TLO” (minus the quote marks) as that’s a common abbreviation for his system.

Perfect. Thanks.

@Azimuth see if you can find a #3 pot size. I've grown AUTO's with Coots mix in #3 pots.

A 1 gal is pretty small. You wood need to flip the plant to flower lighting (Photo-period) before she is mature, or if AUTO your plants will stay small. With a photo period plant in a 1 gal container will require watering 2x a day after she's in flower and you will need to supplement she will be root bound.

There's folks that grow in a soda bottle so it's doable but I think you will need to fertilize some during the grow.

This most likely is mostly Basalt anyway Weasel, and probably finer ground than anything we can buy. I intended to bring a few pounds of it home during my time in the Rocky’s and forgot
@Weaselcracker prolly be able to find some basalt where you're living. Try a river bank or if you're near where a stream or creek flows into the water/bay/ocean, there in the flats a bucket of that muddy clay be the best ever I'm thinking.

Thanks, but I grow in a cabinet with limited real estate so the 1gal is it. And, I don't mind adding nutrients along the way. I've been doing the KNF (Korean Natural Farming) thing adding in plant and fish extracts.

I was more concerned that in a small pot the whole "organics" thing would be compromised somehow.

I get that I won't likely be able to do the water only approach, but really want to grow organically and do a decent job of it.
