That's a big tasty fish!My biggest flathead was 37lb 13oz from Salt Fork Lake
I've only seen small ones and like Stank said we call em horned pout or hornpout. You live in cat land with catches like that! I've caught hundreds of them as a younger man, all under a pound. Speaking of...we were talking about ice fishing yesterday. Oh man I love fishing! It is, but we always released flatheads and kept any Channel cats for eating. Flatheads get up to 60-65 pounds here and we consider them trophy fish.
I love me some fishing too. Now till about April I'll be spending as much free time as I can spare on the water looking for one of the 5 walleye left on the lake. I'm trying to plan a trip up north hopefully to Wisconsin in the spring to see if I can find some real walleye fishing. I may end up taking my 16.5' Dixie V-hull named "Edmund Fitzgerald" up to New York in the spring and see if I can figure out how to A) stay alive on the big lake in a small boat. And B) see about learning how to catch some Erie Walleye. But I'm hoping to end up in Hayward, WI fishing Round Lake, Grindstone Lake and a couple others. Today I put 4 new wheels and tires on my pontoon trailer right after I replaced and packed the new bearings. Should be good to go for a good bit now. My plan is to build a small 12' x 8' cabin on the pontoon boat to use as my home base. Two full size Murphy beds, a small counter space with a sink and Coleman 2 burner stove, and a 12v/propane dorm size fridge. Of course it will have to have a composting toilet.Speaking of...we were talking about ice fishing yesterday. Oh man I love fishing!
The Edmund Fitzgerald, hehe, have fun man! I had a couple of small boats a while back. Big difference in the big water for sure, but that makes it more fun. I'm all in on the last idea for sure. Never met a redneck that didn't know how to have a good time.I love me some fishing too. I thought about going full on country redneck and strapping a pop-up camper on the deck with the door facing the front and the beds out over the water. Much more aerodynamic going down the road and a heck of a lot more deck space up front.
Definitely nothing wrong with a boat named that on the Great Lakes just don't forget to bring the bananas.Edmund Fitzgerald
I had a 50+ pounder when I was stationed down in New Orleans. We'd fish right off the boat launch on base......they had some real monsters down there. My biggest flathead was 37lb 13oz from Salt Fork Lake
yeah the Hornpout is another name for a Brown Bullhead if I am not mistaken. All relatively small....not like the river cats at all.Are you talking about Bullheads? They only get a pound or 2 and are excellent eating.
When I was working in Alberta a few years ago, there was a fab shop I dealt with just outside of Sylvan Lake. The owner had a pontoon boat he striped to the deck and was mounting an old Airstream trailer as a cabin, wasn’t finished the last time I was there but damn it looked awesomeI love me some fishing too.
