Carestaker's - Hybrid LED / HPS Powered 4x4 - Various Strains

Ok, that settles it - I gotta pop my Strawberry Blue. :thumb:

Polyploid, you say ... I didn't know that ... :hmmm::blunt:

Great review!

Congrats CareStaker on another of your fantastic plants! The lighter green is beautiful & always a plus imo. What size pot did she grow in? Which do you rate higher...the Panama or the SB?

Thank you, Bright! She was in a three gal smart. I kinda got stuck in a 3 gal rut, because it was the largest pot I could carry for a time. I could probably bump up, but I'm afraid of the learning curve, where with a 3gal, I have it down pretty well. Anyway, I'm high as Christmas right now - so it's the perfect time to answer your question. In terms of high, I'd say Panama is the more friendly strain, and a better one to have on hand often. Strawberry Blue though, puts you in a BIG BIG smile. She just puts you on the chase to stay there, and she'll only let you go so far with her. Tougher decision than it might seem, it's a nice high from SB. I'd have to say Panama is the better strain, but Strawberry Blue is the better treat. Panama lasts fooooorever. I can burn though SB so quick, I'm like - ''is that the same jar?'' :) They are both pretty darn potent, maybe higher teens.

:blunt: pot-mutants! Thanks GT! Glad you enjoyed. I'm pretty sure you'll like her. Up and Buzzy more than disorienting. Very visual, and fun. Party pot.

What you grow and produce from a 3 gallon pot is pretty incredible. Another fine review too. :thumb:

Thanks AS, glad you enjoyed! :high-five: I can't believe I missed your HL5xHaze while I was away. She was a beautiful monster, reminded me a bit of SWD - which makes sense, as NL5xHaze is very likely Jack Herer minus the Sk#1. She looked very simlar in bud/calyx and growth. Your BB was also a stunner :Love: Amazing plants, congrats on your harvest, and your fine lookin' nugs bro!

Looks like everyone's gonna make it so far. 'Cept that auto, which would have got binned anyway.
Was wondering why the 'lings were a bit sluggish....the Jiffy Pots are sucking all the water out of the soil. I've adjusted, and they should fine, maybe push me out a couple of days or so. Can't wait to get them to their next homes. First and last time with the Jiffys. :(

Their new homes -- Party cups of FFOF, amended w/ 30%/vol Perlite, Azomite, Dolimite Lime, Growology Step 1 mycos and humates. Soil mix was drenched in inoculate, and left to marinate :) :) I'll get some shots of them and a Panama bud shot or two. Peace:Namaste:

UPDATE:

First, to get in the mood......Some dried Panama buds :volcano-smiley:

This one grows on you. Very natural and easy feeling when medicated. If you are sensitive to being disoriented, or feeling 'weird/other' while high, this strain is a good choice. Very potent for a full sativa.

Can't forget Strawberry Blue.

The Veg Contestants :cheertwo::cheertwo::cheertwo::cheertwo::cheertwo:

The seedlings all sprouted. There will be between 4-6 females for flower, which will be in a 4.5x4.5 tent. This is dependent upon the sex of the (2) Candyland Reg seeds. If I end up with 6 girls, well, that sounds like fun, and I'll make it work. :Love:

I tried out some Jiffy Pots. I do not have the matching tray to put them in, and they wicked all of the moisture from the soil, leaving me wet pots and dry seedlings. Maybe they work great if you use the tray, as directed.

IMAG34521.jpg

The stems were all turning a dark purple, they were sluggish, and I had to water them way too much - so I decided to emergency transplant them into Solo cups at one day old. Two were barely above soil, and had their shells on.

IMAG34562.jpg

I typically use straight FFOF, start to finish, and here's how I deal with using a hot soil to start seedlings.

Amend soil with additional 20-30% perlite.
Soak and sprout seed in towel, or plant seed directly on it's side, into soil, 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch below surface.
Pure Water with tablespoon or syringe, approx 4-6 times a day, 10ml, till sprout. Just keep it wet on top.
Once the seedling has sprouted, and the cotyledon have opened, give the container it's first good drenching.
Then do NOT water. Wait until the seedling has acclimated. The roots will have grown to find water, and the container will become dry/light. In my grow, this takes 3-5 days usually. Often you can tell the plant has acclimated, by the look of the stem. It will become hairy and more green/white, like this typically finicky SourD below. (current run, in FFOF)

IMAG3489.jpg

I'm sure it's not optimal for some strains, but it's worked well for me. Just don't over-water. Let them grow out their roots, without suffocating/drowning them, so that they can hook into the soil and acclimate. Once they have, make sure to keep the soil somewhat moist, with the aim of getting them into a drench-to-dry type of watering cycle. Then, do not feed them macronutrients, until they start to show the need for it ~3-5 weeks.

Hi Care Staker, I finally made it to your great journal. Love your grow and your updates - so much useful and intriguing info. Your plants and buds look choice and posh - and tasty :) Love today's pic of the chubby Strawberry Blue Nug that won't fit into the jar - instead of a ship in a bottle it's a nug in a jar :) I really like the genetic diversity and strains in your garden. Although I'm colorful-come-lately to your last grow effort, I've enjoyed catching up and am settled in with all eyes on this one. Thank you for sharing your efforts. All the best to you Care and cheers!

Nice update good lookin babies.

Thanks bro! Happy to be back at it. I can't really describe how much I missed it. :peace::high-five:

:thanks: Thank you, ColorfulDayze, awesome of you to say, very glad you made it!
I've tried to add more of the methodology, and details here, thanks for letting me know it's appreciated! :high-five:
Barring any huge missteps, we should be seeing some very colorful ladies before Spring. Cheers CD :peace::Namaste:

Going to get an update on the Lings soon, they are looking pretty good. I do need to get my RH up, and in doing so, found this good read about humidity, and how your plant reacts to it. Looks like I'm off to Homies.

I am looking at WARM mist...dunno if cool is better...but a little heat will help in that room in the winter.

Peace, love and updates :)

Thanks for the reference CS. It was a good read. It's funny cause that curled up basil plant on that site is exactly how my basil plant looked in my first grow that was in the winter when humidity is really low. They stole the pic right out of my head :laughtwo: Now I know what that was all about. I really need to find a way to get my RH up too before this next go. My RH is only in the 20s this time of year.

UPDATE

Little housekeeping so I can keep things straight...and a more detailed view of the genetics, with my commentary, for better or worse. I'm introducing them - as I have some love for all of these strains, and I've given them abbreviations below.

Ken's Candyland #1, Regular (CL1) sprout 12/10
Ken's Candyland #2, Regular (CL2) sprout 12/10
HSO Amherst Sour Diesel, Fem+ (ASD) sprout 12/10
HSO Blue Dream, Fem+ (BD) sprout 12/10
GHS Money Maker, Fem+ (Kush) sprout sprout 12/11
Samsara Holy Grail69, Fem+ (HG) sprout 12/11

I took these shots right after putting the humidifier in, so they are still looking at little ragged. The leaf twisting is from vectoring to get at the CFL. The leafs also show some very minor signs of water stress, and related nutrient issues. The stalks stayed thinner, the petioles stayed short, and the plants kinda bunched into themselves. After one day with 60RH, they are now opening up, and really thriving.

Money Maker is an absurd name for a beautiful plant, so she will be called Kush, Master Kush, or MK, from here on. Genetics appear to be from the F1 of HinduKush X Skunk, which is then femmed. She should be short, and kushy. I've not yet grown a kush, as I've been driving sativas lately, but I do love me some kush. She's looking stout, I'm super excited to grow her out, and the beans are cheaper than the dirt I put them in.

MK

Ken's Candland is Bay Platinum Cookies, which is really just Girl Scout Cookies, which is crossed with GDP, so it should be nice stuff. I'm hoping the dryer winter months will keep this girl free from PM or similar. I've seen some of these plant grown well on another site, and they look amazing. Both plants are looking great. I hope to do them justice.

Samsara's Holy Grail 69, is Matanuska Tundra x Chronic x Haze. I really like Spanish breeders, and have good luck with Samsara. Should be a fun sativa dom cross, that is supposed to taste like Pina Colada when finished. Also, HAZE! :) She's a bit slow to start, but she's looking better now that the RH is up.

HSO's Blue dream is a shot in the dark. I know that there is only one real-deal Blue Dream out there, and it's been cast far enough, that this east coaster has had the pleasure of partaking of it several times. I don't expect this cross to be what I'm used to, but that's OK. If it is the same, I'll run the cuttings that I plan on taking, even though I prefer working with seed. BD, when done well, is simply one of the best and most well balanced hybrids I've ever had. I'll give my honest assessment. So far, as a plant, she's looking great. My sexy socks....not so much. :)

BD

BD55.jpg

HSO's Amherst Sour Diesel, is a shout out to nostalgia. Like BD, the real-deal EastCostSourDiesel, has been around for a long time, but there are no seeds of that cut. It is my all time most favorite strain. finding it is not easy anymore. ASD, was around here back in the day - and this is my hope at getting some old school Chemdawg and SourD genetics - in seed form. She's looking good, and I'm looking forward to seeing her flower.

YW! Glad you found it helpful, I did as well. These plants look much better after just 12hrs, they will be much bigger next update. I think I've got the fix for winter Vegging in my setup, which might work for you too. I'm just inshore a mile or two at about 42N. If I walk a couple of hundred feet, I can see the harbor. Anyway, I say that because the climate here is always in flux, due to the my location. Typically, I'll just wait for poor conditions to pass. For this stage in Veg though, I really need to get the RH up, if these ladies are going to be what I want them to be. Low humidity also promotes males, and I have two Reg CLs. So, I got a #oneywell 1gal WARM mist, at #est #uy for 26usd. You can spend more and get one with a variable humidistat. The warm mist contributes both heat, and humidity, so I'm now sitting at perfect RH, and perfect Temp. The room went from 25-35RH and a max of 72 degrees w/heat mat, to 65%RH constant, and 75-77 w/ heat mat on. I'll put the heat mat on with the timer now, so I have some variation 'tween night and day. I will spray the entire room with organic antifungals before I put the tent back in there.

UPDATE part-2

All seedlings were started under CFL, and transitioned to LED at 3-4 days old, Dec 14th.
LED is 40" from canopy at this stage, and is 100w actual draw. I'm using Veg mode - 50w, with IR and UV. In the far corner, my makeshift attempts at raising the RH are visible. Fans, towels in buckets, and pans of water.

IMAG35362.jpg

I kept the CFL over the plants for 2 days while the LED was on.
On day 5, I added a second LED panel, and removed the CFL.

IMAG35591.jpg

I forgot how well LED does in VEG. After bringing up the RH, the babies are doing much better. They are spreading out, and new growth is very lush. I'll let the cups dry out and will transplant the 4 bigger girls into 1 gals tomorrow. I don't know what direction to go in as far as training, so I'm hoping to see some preflowers, on CL and will then adjust depending on what the final count will be. I'm sure I'll be topping any of these that look like they are going to be too leggy though.

:thanks::420:

Hey CareStaker. Nice update & looking good! Some great strains. Also a big SD fan & have eyed that HSO ASD. Will enjoy you growing it. Saw that Candyland has lots of sativa so must be due to his Bay 11 in it besides the GSC & GDP? Ken Estes has become a pretty big deal in this area. Would also be interested to know what you attribute the dark seedling stems to?

Thanks Brightlight! I'm hoping they do well too. I've seen some of the CL grow out, and they look amazing. I think the non-GDP side of CL is a OGKush (chem) crossed with Durban, and maybe Strawberry Cough..or maybe I'm mixing it up.

It's my personal and anecdotal experience, but dark stems on seedlings for more than a couple of days, almost always means something is amiss. I really have no idea why, but I believe it is a localized buildup of sugars, expressed as anthocyanin, which shows as purple. To me, it means the roots have not hooked up with the plant, or there is something unequal - between root and green (like lockout and defic). Light purple is fine, dark purple means lots of waiting.

As a side note... LED grown plants have higher sugar (brix) so if you are growing with LED or high brix, you may see more purple (seedlings, and grown plants) than HPS alone.

I'm so stoked to have some new strains to grow! :circle-of-love:

Completely forgot about the Bay11 component. :volcano-smiley: I read that it is sativa, but it's genetics looks indi heavy. Weird. Maybe they backcrossed somewhere. Anyway, their genetics look incredible so far. The CL seeds were huge and a pearlescent stiped purple brown. Best seeds I've ever seen. :circle-of-love:

I'm hoping for big things for the ASD too. She's got thinner leafs, and is stacking tightly like an indica dom. She was a bit sensitive, but isn't too fussy so far. I'm crossing my fingers that she will be productive, resistant, sour and balanced.:cheertwo:

:peace::Namaste:

Great update .

Thanks Dusty, thanks for your support, and congrats on your harvest! :peace::Namaste:
