Canobud's First Grow - The Widow

Oh, by the way, youre new here so thought id give you a heads up. There are 2 contests going on right now in the sponsor section to win free seeds. Gorilla is one of them. Theyre super easy to enter and who doeant like free stuff, right. Thats where i got my widow seeds. First week on the site and i got picked in a xmas drawing for a free 5 pack. Check em out bro.

Hi again Canobud,

Sorry, but just now catching up after my last post.

I can only speak from my experience and the reports from growers with journals, but yes - 4 months plus/minus (60'ish veg - 60'ish bud) is probably an average length of time from seed to harvest when growing in soil. Growers growing using any one of the many forms of hydroponics often experience much more rapid growth than soil growers and that is in fact one of the primary reasons they do so. An average hydro grow is probably closer to 90 days or so in total, unless they just choose to go longer. I'm following another grower in hydro that has some plants vegged for around 6 months and they are Monsters man.

In your last post, you question what is going on with one of the plants. I'm finding it a bit difficult to see anything too unusual with the plant in question given the lighting. Is your concern re: the slight droopiness? If so, I wouldn't over think it as without any other symptoms I would not suggest any change needs to occur.

You've mentioned a couple times I think, concern over the humidity being low. Have you considered adding some humidity to the grow area? I've seen folks employ everything from a plain bowl/container of water to actual humidifiers. I am employing a small cool mist humidifier myself at the moment, but ironically am soon entering the time of year when I will need a dehumidifier. Lower humidity will definately slow down the growth of the plants.

Lastly for now; you asked the logic behind painting the inside of the work light white as opposed to the aluminum surface. Prior to first begining to grow, I did an extensive amount of reading. One site contributor posted some incredibly detailed analysis of the reflectivity of various surface treatments. Everything from panda film and mylar to various colors and finishes of paint. Like most newer growers I was overly cautious of messing things up and the CFL work light was my initial light source for my first plants. The post detailed the dangers of hot spots created by some very reflective materials like aluminum foil that some growers where employing and I got a little overly cautious and out of fear, painted the work light reflector flat white. Over kill on my part, but interestingly it turns out flat white paint is the second most reflective covering available and second only by a small fraction of lost reflectivity.

I'll check in more frequently but wish you happy growing in the interim.

Hey, thanks for checking in! Sounds like hydro is definitely the way to go on my next grow then, I didn't realize there was that big of a difference in the grow cycle.

Yes, I was wondering if that plant was perhaps overwatered, since the one right next to it is reaching up towards the LEDs while it's drooping a bit. They're both watered at the same time. I do have a humidifier in there set to 40-45%, but sometimes I do still see it in the low 30%s. It's crazy, my extraction fan is turned way down too. Temps are stable at 81F during light periods, and drop to high 60s when the lights are off.

Interesting analysis on the work light housing...I only have one running in there now aside from the main LEDs. With more CFLs the temps were too warm. I'm guessing these need at least another week before transplanting.

I confess to having a real interest in hydro and will some day probably give it a whirl just for the experience. However, know in advance that the 30 days or so gained in hydro is offset by additional costs. In addition to the cost of initial set up, the PH of the water needs to be checked and often adjusted frequently, nutrient levels measured and adjusted, the temperature of the water can be critical often employing chillers, and there is potential additional electical costs as pumps, chillers and air pumps/air stones are frequently running. While I think it sounds potentially fun to try, it also sounds as though it could get a little bothersome and kind of ticky.

If your able, you might crank the humidifier up quite a bit as I think the preferred the RH in veg is closer to the 60%-75% range. With fan induced humidity loss, you might at least get into the 50%+ range if set higher. I think you would notice the difference in growth speed. Once you begin to bloom/bud I think something in the 40%-50% is more desirable to help avoid various molds. Your temperatures sound great!

One thing I found interesting...the seed in the Solo cup was planted 4 days after the two seeds in 4" Jiffy pots, yet it's growing fatter than them. It's also darker green.

It's also growing closer to the ground, and secondary leaves are already forming whereas the two older seedlings don't have this growth yet.

I fim'ed and started lst when they were about this size but with uppotting them im not sure what to tell you. I ponytailed which really set that low growth off and running. In my experience with this strain they have stayed really low and very bushy. They look really great man. Im watching the buds fill in and the crystals stack up and i am just altogether happy with the widow. It smells amazing and when you take a flash shot with the lights off the leaves and buds just shine shine shine! Keep up the good work man. I dont think you will be unhappy at all. Im going to post some newer sideways/upside down pics in my gallery later after work if you wanna check em out. Peace bro

Sorry i fell off man, its been a busy few days. Those roots look really great. I would agree that the yellowing is probably N deficiency. From the picture it looks to me like you got your cup from the fim cut. Only time will tell there tho. I thought i missed mine but it took so fingers crossed for you bro.

Hey, no worries! After getting the 3 gallon pot situated, I gave the two jiffy pot plants some nutes with nitrogen. After a few mentions of overwatering on another thread, I followed advice and drenched them and now intend to really let them dry out. After the nutrients yesterday, one of the two (closest to the humidifier in the last pic) is now standing at attention after drooping a good bit over the past week or so. Hopefully they'll also green up more soon as well as the soil dries out.

Didn't quite understand the FIM comment; does it look alright? How is your plant doing?

I meant it looked to me like you had successfully cut the fim but its hard to tell from photos. Theres supposed to be a little cup like depression in the center when you hit it just right.
Glad to hear thet they perked up for you.
My girls are going strong. Still filling up with trichs and fattening up. This is the period where it seems to take forever. lol smells so good tho. I cut 2 tiny little underdeveloped buds that where shiny with crystals for my taste-tester to try. Theyre drying now. Even this early they look and smell like they are going to kick ass. Ill throw some more pics in my gallery when i get some time. Work and life is crazy right now. Peace bro...

Hey Canobud. Think I'll pull up a chair and check this grow out.....subbed.

I'm just starting a grow myself and it's always nice to see how fellow growers come along. It's all a learning experience. The more I learn though...the more questions I have. Lol

So far, looking great. That one in the solo cup is kickin some butt!

Hi Robo Jester and Skicat! Appreciate the sub...since this is my first try I need all the eyeballs here I can get. I watered the 3 gallon plant yesterday morning after nearly a week, and by evening time she was really reaching up towards the LEDs. I'll post a couple of pictures when I get home this evening.

The two plants in Jiffy pots are goners. I tossed one last night and while the other is also now in a Smart pot, I don't think I'm going to put much effort into saving it since I'll likely only have room for one mature plant in a tent this small. They suffered from nute burn (even at 1/3rd strength) and the Jiffy pots were a rookie mistake on my part. Even with a humidifier I really struggled with low RH% and the pots just sucked every drop of moisture from them. The plants also didn't build any kind of root ball in 6 weeks while the Solo cup plant did, in less time. Lesson learned, no Jiffy pots!!

Going forward my focus is on doing some LST on the lone plant to hopefully maximize what I can get out of it. The lower leaves are really starting to fill in under the top level fan leaves, so right now I'm hopeful. I already FIM'd it about a week ago and that part of the plant is showing promise as well. I may ponytail the top to help those lower bud sites branch out and develop but I don't want to choke off the top bud sites while doing it. I need to do some additional reading on ponytail methods.

Pics tonight!
