They are in the family of Pentatomidae that includes shield bugs and other stink bugs. Every year I have a few of the brown stink bugs that gather in the "attic" for the winter months. They truly do give off a foul smell when you "take them out".
I'm going to have to go on a shield bug hunt, there are some in the tomato garden too. They feed off the stems and they seem to like the tomatoes once another critter has opened them up.
Whatever the parent is, I've seen these laid on a deck rail last year. Stink bug is probably correct.
