Canadian Growers Group & Friends

Hi folks yesterday night just finished taking some clones and today I was wondering what methods do you use to clone your plants and what kind of success rate do you usually achieve? ... I use rapid roots on a dome bubbler system and achieve almost a 80% propagation all the time. Usually one or two get sacrificed to the pot gods! lol ... Anyways always looking for newer and better ways to up my clone success rate.
I used to be pretty hit or miss cloning, doing the rapid rooter, cloning gel, humidity dome & clipped fan leaf method. Tried soils, and seedling mix mediums. Got maybe 40-50% success rate.
Last year I ditched the dome, gel, and rapid rooters. I stuck 4 cuttings in jiffy pods with 40 year old rooting powder, and put them on a window sill, and 4 more in glasses of water after dipping the scraped stems in the powder.
Damn things all rooted! I only had space for 2, so I had to give 6 of them away. I'll be trying the glass of water method again this year. If I get a decent success rate I'll be sticking with it from now on.

First off you need to start with good genetics. do a search for breeder Stich & super autos
Buy some reg auto seeds & start crossing
Super stinky is a nice plant if you like skunk

I understand the good genetics I got that down , I just want to be able to learn more about everything , as which ones are best selected males how do they choose a male if they don’t know what the male is capable of , there’s just a lot of info, other then good genetics that I’m looking for,and I was hoping someone could recommend a breeder or someone who has documented what what why they are selecting things I just don’t want to throw two nice plants together and hope for the best , I want to learn the science behind it all

Hello! Fellow Canadian grower here. I moved from the US to Calgary in January. I bought all of the pieces I need for a 2x4 RDWC tent set up. I begin assembly on the 1st. I'll have to skim through to catch up but wanted to say hi

on cloning discussion... I used to just use rooting powder and jiffy pucks under a homemade dome and had great success. With the two strains I grew last year I couldn't get a clone if my life depended on it. I am thinking the strain has a lot to do with it or I lost my touch

Some strains will grow roots sitting in tap water in a glass. So yes strain is a factor.

HI Deanwest89 first welcome to the group!.... When it comes to choosing a male plant in my breeding projects, I like to look for certain male pheno traits in male plants, like do they grow thick stems and and close internode spacing and if they have an interesting growth pattern I want to have in the final stable strain, also I like to note how quick they germinated and how quick they grew. If the male plant has all these traits and good health like an athlete I want him on my team, rather then a stand in bench warmer lol.... But in all honesty sometimes its fun to just pollen chuck two strains together and see what you get after you breed in and out the traits you want. ;)

I was researching this a few years ago on another forum and one of the other members said he used "stem rubs" to choose males (lol, definitely not that). You rub the stem and sniff, and it can give you an idea of terpene profiles. But as others have said, Dankman's thread would be a good resource.

I have to add that to my male pheno hunts.. The rub N' sniff test :)

She's getting close....

Thank you for the kind welcome , always happy to be amongst like minded folks . Thank you very much fir a quick run down on picking males . So I guess before you flip to creat the pollen you decide weather or not it’s worth it . Now are you able to pull this off in the same house as flowering tents or should this be outside if possible .one day when I have a nice stack of mother’s , I’ll play around . I recently lost all my genetics and had to do the nuclear option , so I’m back to the drawing board , I have started to try and think sustainability with everything in doing and what is more self sustaining then breeding your own seeds , I appreciate the advice

this is interesting , I have had some really stinky vegging plants before. I wonder if this is a way to single out certain traits to try to make more pronounced idk what the right word would be .thanks man

Glad to have you aboard...Ya I basically treat my male plants just like their female counterparts, When It comes to pollinating plants I have a separate Dwc system grow box area I use away from my blooming plants area for small batches or like you said, If I'm not crossing and just upping the numbers of a certain strain I'll then put one or two seed grows out side far away to get nice and big and tons of seeds of that strain. 3 Area's I grow in ...In the house... I Veg a mother or mothers and clones depending on what I'm up too at the time, if I'm doing a small seed batch I use the mini bloom box I made and bloom them in my house or at a grow friends house, Then in an Outside insulated shed is where I keep my Bloom room for bud, I also as much as possible try not to ever wear the same clothes I wore in the pollinating seeding area into my blooming area.

I agree with the whole self sustainability that's why I grow with regular seed, but just recently I have thought about venturing into the land of trying a ruderalis strain, to produce some auto versions of my favorite strains.

Smell test .... That's part of how they came up with the cheese strain they found a pheno type of skunk No.1 That really smelt like cheese and kept breeding that trait till all the pheno's of that group smelt cheesy then stabilized that sent in the strain threw generations of back crossing and holding onto the cheese smell. :)

Man that’s bang on , i feel you in the clothes situation , I always drop my clothes upstairs and I go into the tent in a pair of pants I keep in my secondary tent which my grow tents are inside , have a had some infestations from not being careful .
So the small batch stuff that space is only dedicated to making the seeds ?
How do you do this in small batch , do you have a journal on what your doing with all this , I am fascinated with it, and I see a lot of guys doing some really amazing stuff in small spaces ,
So once you find you strain you back cross it to bring out certain aspects that interest you , thank you very much for all this , I really appreciate the willingness to share infronattlion ,
Growing cannabis before the legalization no one would even talk about what they were doing I really love the direction of everything. I never thought I’d see the day to be honest where I am openly talking about and sharing my grow stuff . :peace:

Ya the small batch stuff I use my mini 20 pod grow box, Its basically a dwc bucket with a cabinet style box with light up top that slips over the dwc system. I put my selected clones a male and a female of one strain or of different strains and leave them to do their thing in the box. I usually put the clones in once they have rooted and then switch the light to 12/12 cycle this way keeping my plants small and still able to produce a good amount of seeds. Once I'm done a batch I clean and wipe every surface in the box with a diluted bleach water solution and let the grow box setup sit for awhile till I'm ready to start the next batch . As for a grow journal I have all mine in paper form still, I haven't started one on here yet, I usually post what I'm up to on this thread tho. Trying to build this thread out as a one stop shop for Canadian growers that need Canadian specific growing information.
Hey no problem, I always love sharing what I know and learn about cannabis with others.... Its the Hippy way! ;)
