Eskom our power supplier is run by our thieving ruling party in Goverment. Power plants are in disrepair, taken 20 odd years now to finish a new power station that was supposed to take 5 years..
They purchase poor quality coal which is not good and they tell us how the national grid can't support the demand put upon it.
The government promised all informal housing developments back in '95 that there would be free electricity if they voted for that party and now those informal settlements are towns/ suburbs of city's that owe 14.5billion zar which is half of the national debt. Googl Sowetos electricity debt it's scary.
So basically load shedding is switching off certain parts of the country at certain times to save electricity on the national grid to provide us with electricity, I've got mates in Joburg and Capetown who grow indoors and they go up to 12hrs a day in stages with no electricity.
Eskom recieved a bailout from China and the treasury in the last cpl weeks but 3/4 of the funds have already been squirreled away citing costs as new equipment and a new coal supplier..
My dad is an electrical contractor as he has his own electrical business and he does jobs for Eskom on their overhead power lines when a big job is pending and he says electricity is going to become something only the wealthy can afford in South Africa, scary thought brother.
