Brah's 5 Gallon Hempy, Melon Fizz, Mars Hydro TSW 2000, Grow Journal

Day 4 update: Little Anita is growing slow and steady. The Fiji bottle is a bit taller than a solo cup, so I imagine it will be a few days before her roots reach the reservoir and growth takes off. She's starting to stretch out a bit so I turned on a few of the fans and lowered the light 1'. Never to early to start building strong stems.

looks good. i'd use a solo cup to start. anything over 500 ml is gonna take wks to catch. you could get half a grow in before it'd be set for up pot.

you want a third to half the media locked up and the roots well in to the res at up pot in hempy. the plants don't really get going until the roots hit the res.

5 gal is ambitious. a 5L (1 gal) bucket produces the same as an indoor 5 gal soil grow in hempy. 2 - 3 5L hempys should be sufficient to fill a 3 x 4.

i run a 4 x 4 and 5 5L is about all i can fit max. i normally run 2L buckets in hempy.

edit : also don't use anything but black or dark sided buckets and solo cups. perlite won't block the light, and a clear sided bucket or cup will severely slow and stunt growth.

Thanks @bluter! Great Info.

I don't have access to solo cups, and I'm a believer in giving the taproot room to run with seedlings. If this were a clone I definitely would have cut the Fiji bottle down to about half this height. I'm with ya on clear containers, I've got the bottle wrapped in several layers of tinfoil and white electric tape.

And yes, 5 gallons is ambitious... But heck... It's just 1 plant in a 4x4 :yummy:.

that's more appropriate for soil than hempy. in hempy you want to get them to the res as soon as they are established, and then up pot at that time.

when done right the roots will be just above or at the res already in the new pot when transferred over. my hempys experience either little or no shock when done correct.

Sounds good. I'll keep that in mind when I up-pot. Maybe next time I'll do a side by side with 1 deep and 1 shallow starter pot.

Ive seen monsters grown in tiny containers, and I agree that from an economics perspective starting a small and up-potting sooner for a faster veg is the way to go.

We've just found that for us, we've had more vigorous (admittedly kinda subjective) plants when they are allowed a more vertical root structure. This has come from experiments in soil, hydro, and aero, though admittedly not hempy yet.

Grateful for your knowledge and experience! I can be a stubborn old panda sometimes, thanks for bearing with me :bongrip:.

shallow pots let the plants hit the res faster. it's been noted here that tall skinny hempy pots are less effective than a squatter wider one. extremely flat wide ones can have some issues as well, that becomes more of a shoot to root system, requiring a different approach.

one member here tried tall skinny pots and was not impressed over his regular hempys.

there is a happy middle ground. those tubs work out well in outdoor hempy if you have the climate. i do not.

hempys were originally run in 2L pop bottles with the tops cut off. i still run 2L buckets for the most part but have much prettier ones now. i can stuff 6 - 8 2L hempys in a 4 x 4 but it's hard to keep them contained inside that space.

i've run hempys all the way through flower in as little as a 750ml shampoo bottle. some guys have run solo cups to finish.

the beauty of hempy is it's actually a micro plant approach that produces a near macro plant.

hempy is it's own animal. most closely related to coco, but only in feed sched. both coco and hempy work as a result of the roots being able to breathe. being rootbound becomes almost a non issue as a result.

in indoor you want to flip just before your media is locked up and have it bound completely by finish.

come read through my journal sometime. feel free to ask anything there as well.

Will do!

Will do! Yeah DalaiHempy is a classic. We totally did 2 liters in the early 80s before moving on to other styles.

And no worries mate, the final pots a standard black square 5 gallon bucket so Anita won't be in a tall skinny pot for too long. Much love!

sweet. used to do almost the same with clone only sog grows in hydroton back then. pre-internet.
i did them passive hand water and ran a flood and drain on the same principles.

no one understood how we did it. all our clones started in trays of straight perlite. a jamaican friend showed us some tricks back then. blew us away. we always assumed they only did soil outdoor stuff.

Day 5 Update: little Anita is moving along nicely and starting to stretch a bit. We moved her and the light 1' closer to each other.

Typically Im more aggressive with having more light, closer to the plant. However these Archive beans are pretty expensive so I'm being cautious until I have time to back cross one and make more.

are you planning to pheno hunt the remaining beans before the BX? im stuck deciding if i am going to:

A - find a winner, reverse a clone and pollinate itself
B - find two winners, reverse one and pollinate the other

i like the idea of locking in a specific pheno, but also keeping some genetic diversity in the line might make for better/more vigorous/resistant plants.. what to do batman!>?

Oy mate!

I'm still undecided, and that's a tough call. I'm going to do option A or C.
A - You will have more consistent phenos in your first generation. Big plus if you love the plant.
B - You get more genetic diversity, and a higher potential for surprise pheno traits. And darn do I love a good surprise. BUT then why waste the time pheno hunting in the first place. Just reverse 1 and open polinate the rest.

If I grow it out and it doesnt WOW me somewhere on the Weight/Terps/Bag Appeal scale then
C - Find a winner - and cross it with something I do love.
(I got a cut of Purple Skunk Dawg with some serious red wine terps and great structure/production I've been crossing with everything. Just cut a cross of the PSD with Blueberryland that's pretty nutz... smell and flavor started with fresh cut lawn and gas and blooming wildflowers on the cut, but has matured to strawberries and cream on the cure)

Day 7 Update: 1 week above perlite!!! Woot woot! Last night I watered to ~25% runoff (pH solution of distilled water, hydroguard, and AN Grow), and switched to the @Mars Hydro TSW 2000 @ 30%. This morning Anita was praying and looking happy!

what did you upgrade to? the amazon fairy just brought me a new 4x4 ac infinity tent, 6" cloudline fan and carbon filter :D my melons are on day 3 of 11/13 and are growing bushier, but not stretching too much.

cant wait to see that thing explode in the next week when the roots hit the res

Haha I just had my intake ducting pinched in an open window, I finally got around to cutting a hole in the wall and doing things right. Should reduce the load on my intake fan.

Bushy is good! Sounds like your garden is rockin.

The 'upgrade' :bong:. I'm running 2 6" ac infinity cloudlike fans on the controller and they're great. You'll be happy with yours.

looks good but you're a little stretchy.. how high up is the light ?
at 30 % you can probably run at 24 inches, even with seedlings. if you're at 36 inches or higher i'd guess you could run closer to 50%
