Bill C-45: Canada's Legalization, The Drama Revs Up

Do you have any proof of this? This would be going against court orders for medical patients who rely on the LP's....

felonius kinda beat me to it. health canada does not consider marijuana to be medicine. this leaves the administration to the individual provinces to decide.

the retail licensing process just ended in my province. the same day the provincial got'v announced the application process for wholesalers. the restrictions are explained within those two processes.

And what would this mean for those of us growing? Will we be limited to just 4 plants? Currently I am allowed 30.

in my province the doctors have all been pressured to stop issuing mmj certs. beginning in 2014 there was a concerted effort to root out any who were prescribing by the provincial gov't and the provincial college of physicians. my personal GP and fantastic doctor was run out of the province, so i was forced underground.

at present if you broach the subject with a doctor they will simply tell you to wait til it's legal. those i know in the industry tell me grow licenses ended around 2014 as well. those lucky enough to get one, continue to be grandfathered in, but only if their doctor continues to sign off on it. if the doctor leaves the province they are screwed.

about this time the provincial gov't passed a law stating all mmj certs have to be issued by a doctor from within the province. most other provinces have followed suit. no more internet or out of province doctors allowed.

i now have an activist doctor. his practice is 1 1/2 hrs outside of the major city i live in, but it is worth the drive for me. we are going to try for a grow license just to see what happens. my doctor will not say for sure, but he does feel that there will no longer be a mmj classification once it is legal. if that is the case, then the law reverts to the 4 plants max.

you can talk to your doctor about it, but in my province they are being kept out of the loop. i would assume you can keep it up so long as they keep issuing the license.

edit : just wanted to add these are the conditions in my province. things change from province to province depending on the attitude of the local gov't of the day.

In Alberta doctors are handing out scripts and grow liscenses like candy! The medical regime is not going anywhere anytime soon!

Friends and family still receiving grow liscenses and renewals without issue....

jealous lol. things kinda chilly here.

not related to licenses but we just had all our dispensaries raided. don't think anything is open. it wasn't a surprise tho, the police were talking about it for weeks.

health canada does have a list of lps that are licensed to both sell and produce. pretty much big weed. it's pretty outdated, but the point is it is federal. most of the medical suppliers are on there so i would assume they are allowed to supply mmj recipients anywhere.

Yep the LP's are federally regulated so they can sell to any medical patient who wants to buy from them. The ACMPR is a federal court ordered program that recreational won't be changing.

It will now be one hell of a fight for Health Canada if they ever try to challenge the medical or the medical growing patients! There are thousands and thousands of people with grow licenses for medical now!

Health Canada does not agree with cannabis as medicine but has to up hold the court order, indefinitely! Unless they want to return to court and be challenged against even more growers than the MMAR court cases!

health canada's position is cannabis will be available to anyone who wants once legal. therefore no licensing will be necessary or given. once legal there is nothing a court ruling can do to force them to provide licenses.

put plainly, medical marijuana will probably not exist as a category.

enjoy it now, jason kenney wants a stricter approach.

Can you imagine how many of us would be forced back on opioids and other really nasty drugs? I can't see it happening...

Just FYI bluter, it is a federal program so I am not sure what you are not understanding! Been around since the MMAR days so not my first rodeo!

Let’s face it. The medical uses of cannabis are viewed with suspicion and/or disdain by a large % of the medical community, including the CMA and Health Canada. They cite a lack of clinical evidence which is, of course, a direct consequence of the long-term demonization of cannabis. Every advance we have made has come from the courts and politicians – not the conservative traditional medical community.

Let’s not forget that many of us skirted around the standard medical community and got our scripts from doctors or clinics that we went to ONLY to get cannabis, right? And those clinics were rubber stamping almost anything with a pulse that walked in their door, right? This has not helped us legitimize our case one bit. Recreational legalization will fling open one door but we have to make sure that the MM door doesn’t get closed for lack of interest.

Well put Ian.

I expect the number of Medical Marijuana patients to drop later this year as those frustrated by the system and those scamming it turn to "legal" recreational cannabis. After that, those still in the system will have to protect the gains we have made in the courts.

Don't forget, the government doesn't have to roll back the medical cannabis laws, they only have to ignore the process or cut budgets to effect change. By simply reducing the funding for medical cannabis administration, the system slows down or grinds to a halt. Patients get frustrated and turn to the recreational market. I know you are thinking it is already bad, but it could get worse.

In 2013 the Conservatives enacted the Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations Act. It took four years to get that changed so you could grow your own medical cannabis. While a substantial number of us just went ahead and grew, I suspect many others didn't because they are law abiding patients, even when the law was unjust.

I encourage everyone to be vigilant when it comes to cannabis law, medical or recreational. These freedoms have been hard fought, with personal financial penalties and the loss of personal liberty being the currency of change.

Peace. :peace:

Let's see how long Health Canada takes this time. Last year it took 5-1/2 months to get my grow license. They told me it takes six to eight weeks for renewals. I got my prescription renewed, and sent the paperwork today, two months early. Hopefully, I'll have the approval before my current license expires.
