Bassman's RDWC - High Defoliation - Master Kush Grow #2

Hey Bass, I just read through, I like the new hood, $200 is steep, but I think it will be we'll worth it in the end for you. Your a good man for helping your mom the way you are. I'll be hanging to watch your grow.

Thanks NEP! And welcome to my journal! Enjoy the ride!

Looking good Bass. As far as using the MH in flower I think its more for the first two weeks or so to keep stretch to a minimum

BTW I like that new hood.

That's what I do, is the first 2-3 weeks to help limit stretch. However, I have heard a number of people swear by the results they get from MH bulbs in flower going the distance, too. Typically I've heard the denser, harder bud thing. I've also heard smaller overall yields. Wish I had some experience or something better than hearsay Bassman, but I've not tried it yet. I've considered running one of each in my set-up throughout and switching the bulbs once every week or two to switch it up. Maybe best of both worlds?

Just a FYI if anyone is thinking about this Master Kush for their grows. Nirvana, a sponsor here has them on their weekend whopper deal this weekend for $24.43 for 5 feminzed seeds. That's a 30% discount and the first time I have seem them on the weekend whopper. This is my 2nd grow from seedling on these and all are female. The first grow was very nice. The smoke was smooth after only 1 week of cure, and the buds were nice and dense. Very easy to grow strain.

Welcome guys!

Not totally AZM. But for now, because of area (sq ft), height issues I am forced to go hid. Well, really it's because of plant limitations and size I am growing too. For me to get proper coverage with the LED I would want to add two more 600w units, using three for the 5x5 with a 4 plant grow, or 1 more led if I did a 3 plant grow. It's cost prohibitive for one thing. And I'm asking too much to try to get 36" or so in penetration because of the size of the plants I must grow.

If I were to change styles and grow a lot more plants but smaller, it would be a no brainer.

Update

Day 7 in flower, day 17 in 12/12, 24 hrs on new hood.

I'm totally thrilled with this new hood. I'm totally depressed with how much I've spent on gear and how much I've spent on upgraded. Back to 1000 watts (was 750 because of heat-air leaks from old hood) and the max temp has been 82f. Sealing it all up with a good hood and being able to close the tent up more and let the carbon filter pull air seems to have helped a lot.

While I can't say for sure, but it appears that deficiency issue is gone. A few more days should let me know better.

The girls are stretching well. They're fairly wide as well. The runt of the litter, the girl in the back left is probably 6" shorter than the rest still. She's doing fine, but no idea why she's that far behind the others. Normally one would bend over anything that's 6" taller when using high defoliation technique, but I think in the end, the bending would possibly overcrowd that smaller gal. So I'm going to let it be.

Because I pulled some bad leaf during this 12/12 period I'm not going to strip at day 21 exactly. I'll keep an eye on the girls and when I think stretch is over, I'll strip. More than likely I suspect this will be Tuesday - Fri next week. Or basically day 23-26 of 12/12.

PPM is at 1150 or so.
PH is 5.8
RH is 46%
Temp max is 81-82f

Looking for experienced opinions here:
I've been reading there seems to be a trend with people using MH lights in flower rather than HPS. Folks talk about denser buds and more trichomes
.

Question:
1. Is this true and if so what are we looking for in a MH light to purchase and use in flower.
2. Would it be beneficial for me at this point to switch?

Here's some pics from today!

Below: These two taller branches, the one on the right is a main branch, the one on the left is an off shoot. Both same height thanks to bending.

Mh in flower is a bad idea mate. I havent done it personally but i have seen it done by others. They endend up with scrawny looking buds that werent worth growing. u could use for first week of flower or maybe 2, but why? If you have a quality hps there is no need. I have grown using mh in veg then switched to hps in flower and i didnt see any difference in yield or quality in the end product. Also if what ur doing isnt broke it dont need fixed! Dont waste your time trying to flower with mh, honestly mate. The only way i would do that is if i had no other bulb but then i would just buy one.......

ok i gotta chime in i did flower with mh heres what happened i ran the mh for the last 4 weeks on a strain i had flowered under cfl and hps before, dont do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my yield was terrible the dried up fluffy and scrawny, now the bud tasted great and was very potent but ya no do not flower with only mh, but do add mh to your hps ,mh produces a bit of uvb ,uvb increases potency quite nicely, proven scientific fact, better yet just add a couple uvb lights the reptile 10.0 output cfls work great my latest plants are really stronger than anything i have grown before, you can also add them in t5 style,

Interesting BID. I've been reading a lil thread elsewhere, about 15 pages long with claims of better yield and potency. But not a lot of concrete stuff either as most of them were using really cheap ass hps bulbs before, like sylvania's and what not.

My first hydro grow was with a 400w MH warehouse light. It had one of those big bell reflectors.
It produced very dense buds. The quality didn't seem any different from the next grow with HPS.
The weight was probably close too. The MH buds were smaller but heavier. The HPS buds bigger
and more airy. I ditched the MH because it had the ballast attached to the top of the light and
was way hotter than the HPS. Both would ideal. You can get a 36 inch cool tube with a socket on
each end.

Awesome grow. Great looking hood. I am really thinking about using this defoliation technique. I am not sure I will use it this grow, but I do have a few clones I am working on rooting right now. Maybe one of them will get it. I am subbed.

from what i have been reading its best to use the mh during the first couple of weeks of flower, it says to use the mh until you see flowers forming, so at the moment i have a dual spectrum 400 watt hps with digital ballast, now i get 55,000 lumins from this dual spec bulb, i went with the dual spec so it would suitable for both flower and veg stage, but the blue spectrum is not enough and the plants still stretch to some extent, so ill buy a standard 400 watt hps that gives off 65,000lumins, then ill buy a 400watt mh and as my ballast is the digital type then i can use a mh bulb in my hps ballast, how ever this dont work the other way round, you cant use a hps bulb in a mh ballast, not sure why you cant but clearly it dont work, but as long as you got a hps digital ballast then you can run a mh of the same watt in this type of ballast

so my plan is to buy the best 400watt hps bulb with the highest lumins and the same with the mh bulb, ill then use the mh bulb for veg and when i flip to flower ill keep the mh bulb in for the first 2 weeks, then when the plant is clearly in flower ill switch to the hps, this method is suppose to be the best method for getting the most from the plants, as of yet i have not tried this so cant vouch for it either way, but its something ill be giving a try once i get some new bulbs

I am running my MH for 2 weeks into the flip as well. Then I will switch to my HPS. I am running a 400w set up as well. Feel free to stop by my grow Donpaul. I am also using GLR.

Update:

Day 18 in 1212, day 10 in flower.
**corrected day #'s**

Girls are still stretching but boy are they starting to show lovely flowers too. The hood has had to get raised a few times since adding it Tuesday. More than heat to hand, I'm gauging by appearance of good width of light penetration. The heat has been awesome at 79f max for the last 3 days since I reset the meter. I credit this to the hood sealing up perfectly and not bleeding any hot air into the tent. The tent has remained sealed up tight except for 2 x 6" passive vents for intake and the carbon filter/exhaust fan has been strong enough to produce some "tent suck". So with negative pressure, I can be confident also that smell will not be bleeding out when it gets stinky.

I've been adding about 2 gals of water daily the last few days. After adding I take ph/ppm readings then decide if I need to add nutrient mix. So far, since Tuesday's res change, I've mixed and added 3 gals worth of nutrient and about 2 gals of nutrient pre-mixed for the last res change that didn't get added on res change day because it was at level. I mix 15-20 gals of nutrient mix when I do a res change. It won't all get added to the system because I use a level I fill to and as root mass grows, this takes up volume in the system. I always have a bit of nutrient left over on res change day.

PPM is being kept in a pretty steady range of 1120-1180ppm or 2.24 e.c. to 2.36 e.c. I like this range.
PH is being held in 5.5-6.0 and mostly in 5.8-5.9 area.
Water temps stay at a solid 68f with the chiller.
RH has risen the last few days up to 60% do to leaf mass transpiring. This will go down in a couple days when I defoliate hard.

Flowers are looking great and have really started to show fast growth.

I'm going to drop seeds for next grow any day now. I just have to decide what to germinate. The list of seeds I have are in post #16, pg 5 top, but doesnt include the Master Kush I still have when I got the seeds for this grow. I have 6 of these still. I'm leaning to dropping the Master Kush into water for next grow and get a mother plant from 4 and flower 3 only from here on out. Unless I get the balls to do a two tent three part grow and always have one tent harvested per 30 days. Still using the T5HO for veg, and then using 400w HPS and my 685w LED to flower in one tent and the 1k hps in the 5x5 tent.

My next update will be Tues-Weds most likely. I'll take pics before and after the 21 day defoliation. But hears some pics from today:
