Ase's Multi-Strain Quadlining In Coco

Great write up Ase. I have to laugh every time I read you warn people about breaking branches. I feel like I am in class and your talking to the class but looking strait at me..... :)

I broke a branch today in fact. Got everything all tied up and dropped the jug of water on one of the arms of my Purple Trainwreck. I basically topped it cuz I sheered it straight off... lol! I’ll show pics next update but you just move on from these things.

Ase,

This is so good if you could put a link to the first post about the start of the training. I think that would help many, including me.

Good idea. I’ll make that happen this happen soon. I also updated my signature to take people right to it.

I linked the hashtag in my signature cause I had to hunt to find out what it was. I linked it to Ase's most recent new people start here lol

I did the same thing to my signature and I am having the 420 Magazine moderators put a link in my first post like @JustMeds suggested. You both have come up with great ways for me to get people the information faster. If anyone who has the #Quadsquad tag in their signature wants to link that to Page 57 (like @Stirstick did) where I start this grow then I think that is a great idea to get new people this information faster and more efficient. I'm glad I have a smart group of #Quadsquad members who keep coming up with these great ideas to spread the Quadlining information to anyone interested.

Awesome start Ase and the tangerine in her own tent is going to really be a killer plant! My critical+2.0 girls will be getting their top nodes tied down tomorrow. They are just long enough to get the ties around comfortably to spread them nicely.

Great write up on systematic defoliation and something great to take note of!

Hope your well my man and prepared for the holidays!

I'm having a lot of fun detailing Quadlining this time. I'm glad to see that there is an overwhelmingly positive response to the effort I am making. I do think it will help a lot of people out with training and I am trying to include everything I can think of at each step. I've even remember to take all the correct before and after pictures this time which is so rare for me. Lol!

Day 25 Veg (Day 32 from Seed) - More Defoliation and Training to the Edge of the Pot

I won't say this will be the last update on training but really there isn't too much more to do from here on out in terms of tying the plant down. One important thing to note is sometimes the heavy Indica plants don't make it all the way to the edge of the pot. They are more compact and I've found are a little harder to quadline than hybrids or sativas. You just really have to know when they are trained good enough and then let them go vertical from there.

The first thing I did today was to really get all the ties to the edge of the pots so there really isn't any further out I can go to train them. A majority of the setup for the quadline is done and these are just small adjustments to help. I no longer will be able to move the stakes from here until I take them off post-stretch (That's even if I do take them off). Every once and a while I will likely push them down a littler harder as the plants get stronger and pull at them, but I won't be moving the stakes around at all. After that I just looked to see what was blocking any fresh nodes and defoliated that. It was the same on every plant and one of the leaves that points to the middle was blocking the node there. Basically every plant got this leaf taken off today for a total of 4 leafs per plant.

You can see in this picture where the middle leaf blocks the two nodes. That is the leaf I removed. I try not to pull leaves unless they are in the way of something or running into each other but at this point they really weren't. The Tri-line GSC needed the under-nodes removed and so did the Double Berry. The Double Berry I think is actually furthest along on nodes but it is definitly the smallest plant so far. I think it's going to be super Indica and bushy.

Well this one didn't get 4 leaves taken off because this was the one I mentioned that I dropped the water pitcher on and broke it off. I am training both of the nodes left to be their own branches and will have 5 main-ish branches. Gotta just roll with the punches.
All of them after training all the way to edge and doing the little defoliation. Starting top left and going counter clockwise, DTF, GSC, Purple Trainwreck, Double Berry.
Tangerine Dream got her 7 gallon final home yesterday and she is loving it. I am very much liking the way she is shaping out so far. Just a reminder of what she looked like 48 hours ago.
Current. Look at that inner growth.

Great stuff Ase !

I just got my ties put on my 4th node! Been tip spreading every day to encourage growth and so far they look to be well on their way to being healthy quads!
I’ve got more pictures at my journal.

Oh no! I was planning to quadline my blackberry kush’s. They are indica heavy, do you think I should abandon ship on the quadline for this round? All I’ve done is remove nodes 1 & 2 so far.

Nope, I quadline everything. I just was comparing the size of them to the other ones even though they are at the same point. When doing multi-strain grows it can look like they aren't doing as well and they get pretty bushy until they stretch but you would still have good results. I just think Sativa's and Hybrids are easier just because they space out faster.

The "X" and Removing the First Under-node

I know I already posted an update today but think of that as yesterday. Today I decided to put the DTF #1 (suspected female) in a 3 gallon pot. The DTF #2 is now in the garbage. I hesitated doing this and thought of just throwing it in my other tent and letting it go 12/12 just to make sure but I am going with my gut and once I did it I knew it was the right move. It was a boy and it needed to go. So now I should have all girls left and it's the exact amount of plants I wanted.

Since all the plants had fresh growth and bounced back really well, I decided to do more training. The Under-node on the quadline was big enough to remove now so I went ahead and did that. What is the Under-node you say? It is the node that just never gets enough light to amount to anything so I remove it early on not to waste energy to it. It is caused by pulling the branch down horizontally which is unnatural for the plant to grow that way so one node ends up pointing at the soil.

First off this is one of the branches I was pulling down further to keep training the plant until we are at the edge of the pot.
You can see when you pull it down there is a node on the underside that is pretty blocked. As the plant fills in quickly it tends to just never get any late and I've found that this node never amounts to anything at all. I get rid of it when it is big enough and remove the fan leaf that was attached to the node as well.
Node removed now.
Pulled down.
I also remove the fan leaf that is attached to the other side of the node as well so all that is left is one node on the top side. That way this node gets a chance at some good light for a few days, otherwise that leaf will block the light and sometimes it amounts to nothing as well.
The famous "X". This is a defining moment for the quadline when you've trained them and you see the structure really start to take shape. Soon I will transplant the Tangerine Dream in the middle into a 7 gallon fabric pot and I will get it into it's new tent by itself. The DTF is back left. Double Berry is top right. Girl Scout Cookie is the Tri-line in the bottom right and Purple Trainwreck is in the bottom left. All of the plants had the same exact things done to them tonight. They were all ready.
Ah this is something i missed before. Note taken.

Yer definitely noticed that but result would be the same either way if you train em or not. The indicas never gonna get as big.
Is definitely easier with the hybrids. Sativas tend to just wanna go straight up for me and pull the stakes outta the ground lol.

Day 28 Veg

I'm not even really sure what an average veg time is for most people but these things are 5 weeks from seed. 1 week of a seedling phase and 4 weeks of veg. The plan is to flip them for the New Year here in about a week for 6 weeks total from seed to flip. I pretty much think that is probably average so the answer to the question of how much longer does it take to quadline then to do other things? My guess is a week at most but might not even be that. I doubt there are too many people flipping their plants with 1 week of seedling and just 3 weeks of veg. 1 week of seedling a 4 weeks of veg maybe but I feel like 1 week of seedling and 5 weeks veg has got to be pretty average.

I take off for a vacation in 3 weeks and I need them to be mostly done stretching before I leave. I don't want to leave the person I am having take care of the girls with anything to worry about besides just feeding. I'm really just trying to set everything up so that it's really easy for them and nothing gets messed up. This grow has been going almost perfectly and would be a huge bummer to have bad things happen at this phase. Stretch phase to me makes the biggest different in the plant in the end. If there are any issues prior to flip or during it can really be detrimental to the final yield.

Yesterday I did a little tweaking and some more defoliation. Just taking leaves here and there that were blocking other nodes (sorry no pictures, was rushing getting to a family event and plus it was Christmas!). At this point it's just defoliating based on what you see going on with the plants. My tri-line GSC require different defoliation than the quadlines because less is getting blocked with only 3 main lines. This is where grower experience comes into play and it can be kinda nerve racking trusting your instincts but if it looks like it's causing a problem then the leaf probably needs to be pulled. I try not to do a ton right before flipping (like a couple days) so I will be trying to do all my defoliation work within the next 3-4 days. The ties are all still in the same spots basically. Some of them I had to adjust but nothing really worth noting. Flip time is so soon and I am very excited!

3 Days ago they looked like this after defoliation.

Today they looked like this and I did another round of defoliation yesterday. These things are growing very quickly and recovery is really anywhere between 12-16 hours. It's ok that everything isn't 100% even. With quadlining you will get a layer that are the main colas and then a sub layer that are more colas but not quite "mains". After stretch, anything that doesn't fit into those two categories usually gets cut off or defoliated. It's always a judgement call but it's pretty easy to tell what is worth keeping once stretch is completely done.

The Tangerine Dream right now is growing but it's really focused on root growth due to putting it into a 7 gallon container. It will not get flipped with the others and I really do expect this to be a monster plant. I'm going to guess that I won't be flipping this one until mid or late February. The 4 nodes getting taller in the middle I will stake down soon and I'll basically be making an octopus with this plant. The 4 mains will be getting tied to each pole of the tent and the 4 ones I am talking about staking down will start heading to the middle of the sides of the tent. That should give it the correct spacing to fill out the tent.

Everyone stay safe for the rest of the holidays and I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. 2019 is just a few days away!

Plants are looking fantastic Ase! That tangerine is going to really turn out! Can’t wait to see it! My criticals are growing quick I’ve adjusted the ties again today! The qaudline is taking shape now and I’m pretty pleased with how they look so far.

Hope you had a good Christmas and are ready for the new year !

Top of the morning to ya mr.Ase, really loving the detail and in depth walk through on your quadlining as I'm now busy with my 2nd attempt at doing the #quads...
Im using a Candyland for this attempt, she's been outdoors all her life so far.....
My 1st attempt flowered when I moved her outdoors to early ( sept for me ) then she revegged but lost her after I had to transplant her sadly.

She had a bit of a nitro def 2 weeks ago, but she is starting to smile again.

I split the main stem while staking her out luckily she didn't miss a beat so far. I've been removing the under branches every 4th week so far, if I may ask a question please mr.Ase..?

On the over/under set of branches I've left the fan leaves on for the vertical facing branches, you did mention 1-2 pages back that you remove them so the new branch gets more light..?

Outdoors here at home from 15 Jan I believe is when the flowering period starts, should I remove them or leave them.?

Cheers kindly. :hmmmm::Namaste:

Hello Smeegol!

If you are growing outdoors then I don’t think you need to worry about removing a ton of fan leaves. The light from the sun is far better than the light we produce in tents and since the light in tents only projects facing down, it is far more important to remove leaves to get light to the new growth. Outdoors the sun gets light to the plant from all angles so pulling the leaves aren’t as important. Honestly I’d probably just leave them with the flowering phase close.
