Arteekay's Second Grow - Autos & Feminized - Mixed Strains

I hear you on the challenge of fans vs floor space. There's gotta be a better way. I have no dreams of being able to get an oscillating fan into the 2x2s. It's gonna have to be hanging out clipping. Still need to get clip on fans. I gave my only one to the daughter and don't have the heart to ask for it back. :laughtwo:

Ok, can't focus anymore. Lol! Goodnight. :hugs:

Today, I had to hang my fan back to the box top (upside down), to free some space on the floor. I get more heat that way (from the led panels vents) but the space is very much needed and more important than a couple of degrees above normal for a few weeks.
Sweet sue, if you can, a cheap desktop oscillating fan should be much better than clip fans, eventhough they can be good for smaller tents. different puprose may be (clip fan = air circulation, oscillating fan = wind simultation making plant stronger).

Yeah, giving up a square foot of prime real estate is painful. I've yet to find a good clip on fan that will actually work on our tent, the fabric is too tight to properly clip on, and the resulting angle is always less than optimal. I have only had two different designs, both under 30 bucks. There's a market for a well designed stand for tents I'm sure, I just need to find it.

I've considered trying to hang one of my fans, never get around to working out the how of it. It'd have to be around the same height anyway, unless i raise everything up to it.

Really just can't wait to not have my fans within the light coverage area, that's for plants! :)

July 26 (Tuesday) Update.

Autos: Early Miss 3 is 61, Train Wreck is 46, Quarter Pounder is 34, and our second Lemon Skunk is 19 days old. They are on an 20/4 schedule and are 15-21 inches from their lights.

Photos: Purple Kush is 112 days old (day 47 since flipping to 12/12). She is 11 inches from her main light.

  • QP got soaked to good runoff with half strength grow nutes (9 liters with 22 ml each of DNF Gro A+B and 4 ml of calmag+) at 872 ppm and 5.8 PH @ 67 f
  • TW got soaked with half strength bloom nutes and fortifier (7 liters with 17.5 ml each of DNF Bloom A+B, 4 ml of GO CaMg+, and .4 g of DNF Bloom Fortifier) at 624 ppm and 5.8 PH @ 67 f
  • EM3 got soaked with 6 liters of quarter strength bloom nutes (6 liters with 7.5 ml each of DNF Bloom A+B) at 349 ppm and 5.8 PH @ 67 f

Following a light day yesterday, we got started early on our chores. Our second Lemon Skunk finally got tied down, almost didn't get to it again but did her up while we were watering our first Train Wreck. I didn't take any 'after' pics, but tomorrow's will show it.

Sadly, our second attempt at a new auto has failed. Our attempted CKS Jack Herer auto cracked but stalled there, and our CKS Northern Lights auto failed to even crack). I'm popping hopefully our second Sweet Seeds Red Poison tonight, and we've decided to pop this weekend's planned germination early. Maybe a third CKS Revolver as we've got the most seeds of her strain.

I had to comment. This is one of those things that's always confused me. The story is that you need wind simulation to make stronger branches. I have yet to have what anyone would consider adequate fans in my growing spaces, and yet my plants grow strong branches. Even the thin ones are like thick fiberglass rods. I'm always wondering why I'm worried about oscillating fans. In a small tent I can bounce air off the walls.

There are several vids on youtube about indoor setups and it is often recommended to use oscillating fan at least during flowering.
"They" say that oscillation allows to alternate the moments with and without wind and so the plants breath better (the "stomatae" find a rythm to breath). it also has effects on humidity. I run my oscillating fan less than 1/3rd of the time, mainly when lights are off due to heat.

I guess that for me, there is also a philosophy, meaning that i do want to simulate real life events in my grow box. Lucky me because in 2016 there are much more fans with the "natural" or "aleatory" algorythms that allow to simulate the randomness of a natural breeze. Give me that moonlight cycle simulator too ;-) I don't know if it is better, but i know my weed has been grown this way, it's just an extra layer of enjoyment ;-)

I've considered trying to hang one of my fans, never get around to working out the how of it. It'd have to be around the same height anyway, unless i raise everything up to it.

it is more difficult with a tower fan like you have (do they work upside down?), they are less powerful in general and less flexible in terms of direction (can't move the head vertically to target up or down) . The desktop fan i am using is powerful enough to send air at all plants levels (canopee, feet etc). I also control the time pots dry with it. you just need 2 or 3 point to hang it (or tape it like i do) and move the head to target the canopee. the plant just under it receives less air than the others (air is actually "sucked" from that particula area, which is in the intraction path anyway, so air is moving also here, it is not "blowing" that's it), and the plant gets all the light it needs from the leds and the box mylar walls (that's significant light for the lower buds). Then you have desktop fans with various directionalities, double flow and what not. After 7 days using the fan on the floor, i find it better hanged upside down, and i need the space anyway, so i'm putting it back in levitation mode :-)

I hope this pic can help? it's ugly but it's flexible (and has moved a bit lately so i did not clean it yet).
it's hung with1 strings to the box top, and another cable is attached to the base and to a led panel, allowing oscillation to take place (otherwise it simply turns around in a weird way and generally not like you want). I guess a good part of the "targetting" of teh fan depends on how you set that second cable, in addition to moving the head vertically for max coverage). The little weight that you see is just an anti-vibration device (silencer). So you only need 2 points to attach it, 1 to a top frame, and one from the base bottom to another point, so the base does not move by itself. Of course, it is in a corner of the box and it reaches everywhere with a simple 60° oscillation (don't even need 90°).

0034-0002.jpg

This kind of fan does not have enough room to oscillate if on the floor, + too powerful to let too close to plants + less efficient for pot drying speed (takes much longer if on the floor = not good for me)..

sorry to plug in your thread with my pics, i hope it helps...

Arteekay, i had the same problem as you. The fabric on my tents is too tight to allow a good angle of placement for my clip on fan. What i did was modify the joint where the two parts of the fan base meet by trimming some plastic away. Not sure how yours is put together but i just removed the edges that were keeping the fan from being able to be angled more and now i can clip the base parallel to the wall fabric and still point my fan anywhere i need it to go. Simple fix for a frustrating problem.

We're getting there, but many would say we're not even really growing "real" weed. Well, except for the two.

I have to agree, it's more like unreal weed!

Our friend Biz is a very occasional reader and poster now, probably hasn't even seen it yet.

My understanding and goal has been giving the sprouts a good dance to keep her focused on repairing her fibers from the exercise rather than stretching. Once they're two to three weeks, I'm just looking to keep them in a steady supply of fresh CO2 and not have leaves stuck together for prolonged periods. Once their into training I try to keep the direct heavy winds down, getting stronger later in flowering.

I have had some floppy sativa dominants for sure.

No apology required or accepted. Thank you for taking the time to put that post together. For us, we're just going to deal with it until we move out of the tents in a few short months, but others can really benefit from seeing how you solved the problem.

:adore:

In the early days of our first grow, I used the bottom two sections of an old floor lamp stand to clip a couple fans on and place anywhere I wanted. Once we started onto the perpetual germinations there's no room for that solution.

Thanks all.

July 27 (Wednesday) Update.

Autos: Early Miss 3 is 62, Train Wreck is 47, Quarter Pounder is 35, and our second Lemon Skunk is 20 days old. They are on an 20/4 schedule and are 15-21 inches from their lights.

Photos: Purple Kush is 113 days old (day 48 since flipping to 12/12). She is 11 inches from her main light.

Another easy day. Only our third Early Miss is in deep flower and not being dried out yet. We're going to take down our first Purple Kush photo on Friday or Saturday at the very latest, and our first Amnesia Haze continues hanging to dry in the photo tent.

I did adjust our second Lemon Skunk auto's tied downs, and spent a couple minutes fixing up our first Quarter Pounder as well. I'm really loving her structure, big sturdy girl.

We decided to give another Northern Lights auto a try after last week's failed germination. Two in a row on our autos has me a bit spooked! We were at 21 of 24, or 87.5% successful, but these back to back failures dropped us to 81%.

July 28 (Thursday) Update.

Autos: Early Miss 3 is 63, Train Wreck is 48, Quarter Pounder is 36, and our second Lemon Skunk is 21 days old. They are on an 20/4 schedule and are 15-21 inches from their lights.

Photos: Purple Kush is 114 days old (day 49 since flipping to 12/12). She is 11 inches from her main light. POW 33 and White Widow are both 1 day old today and will spend the first couple days in the auto tent.

  • LS2 got her first full soak, with quarter strength grow nutes (7 liters with 7.5 ml each of DNF Gro A+B and 3 ml of calmag+) at 394 ppm and 5.8 PH @ 67 f
  • QP got switching to bloom nutes, soaked with quarter strength (8 liters with 8 ml each of DNF Bloom A+B and 3 ml of calmag+) at 425 ppm and 5.8 PH @ 67 f
  • EM3 got soaked with quarter strength bloom nutes as her pre-harvest flush (6 liters with 7.5 ml each of DNF Bloom A+B) at 367 ppm and 5.8 PH @ 67 f

First thing's first, our two newest photoperiod germinations both appear to have been success. Our first CH9 POW 33 has definitely made it. Our third attempt at a CKS White Widow is up, but wasn't open enough to tell if she'll have growth points unlike our last attempt.

Our second Lemon Skunk was tied down again. She looks a lot different than our first at the same age, for better or worse will be determined to a large degree in the next two weeks.

Our first Quarter Pounder is looking fantastic, maybe a touch pale, so we gave her our 2-0-0 calmag instead of our usual 0-0-0 with bloom nutes. Figured a little extra nitrogen this early into flowering will be good, particularly since she's got nearly 40 days left still. Just don't want to run out before she's ready.

And finally, our first Purple Kush photoperiod was cut out of her scrog today, in preparation for harvest tomorrow night. She'll sit in the dark now for 24 hours (if for no other reason than she doesn't have much of any water left anyway) and we'll take her down right after work. I really like Friday harvests, gives me something to look forward to during the work day.

Stripped from their stems and ready to be jarred up, hopefully around 70%:

Went into the tent to dry at 971 grams and was weighed before jarring at 159.4 grams, or 5.62 ounces. She's lighter than I'd hoped for, but still just above our average. She had incredible potential, if I'd been able to save her fan leaves for the last two or three weeks. AH well (get it, Amnesia Haze, AH... anyway).

July 29 (Friday) Update.

Autos: Early Miss 3 is 64, Train Wreck is 49, Quarter Pounder is 37, and our second Lemon Skunk is 22 days old. They are on an 20/4 schedule and are 15-21 inches from their lights.

Photos: Purple Kush is 115 days old (day 50 since flipping to 12/12). She is 11 inches from her main light. POW 33 and White Widow are both 2 days old today and will spend the first couple days in the auto tent.

  • TW got soaked with half strength bloom nutes (7 liters with 17.5 ml each of DNF Bloom A+B, 4 ml of calmag+, and .4 g of DNF Bloom Fortifier) at 599 ppm and 5.8 PH @ 67 f

Most importantly, we finally got a CKS White Widow to germinate, with her first set of leaves intact between the cotyledons. She was stuck in her membrane and had to be freed this morning, but I've some faith she'll make it.

We also were successful in getting a tap root out of our third auto germination attempt in the last two weeks, a Sweet Seeds Red Poison. I put another CKS Northern Lights auto down as well, two days later she shows no sign of cracking even. I'll keep her in the paper towel for another two days, then maybe start experimenting on her a bit. Maybe scratch up her seam and give her another couple days. We had such good luck for so long it came as a bit of a reality check that not all will germinate.

Today was the day we decided to take down our first Purple Kush. Like our first, she looked ok leading up to harvest, but once we got into her it became apparent how light she is going to be. We got 4 ounces off our CKS Crown Royale, and I think we'll end up below that on this PK. We really need to get our broken Mars II 900 back into operation, can't help but feel our Spider x4 just isn't providing the juice to get 'em big. If nothing else we really need to clean the lenses.

Since the photo tent is now without a photoperiod, we moved our third Early Miss over to finish out her remaining week out of the way. Our first Quarter Pounder is as long and wide as we've ever had, and still has 5+ weeks to go.

Comparing our second Lemon Skunk against our first, she's a lot bigger than her sister was. She stretched more than usual as she was off to the side and somewhat in the shadow of her bigger sisters.
