Re: Arteekay's 1st Grow - Sunshine #4 - Spider x 4 - Crop King Autoflowering Mix Stra

RTK maybe try coco/perlite mix for your soil next time.... You water EVERYDAY don't have to worry about weighing or anything, just water daily until run-off. Don't have to worry about over water and plants get huge. Just a thought.

I would recommend watering every other day using this method.(Depending on how much perlite you use, but assuming nothing even close to 75% perlite mix). Allowing air to get at your roots is one of the biggest secrets to getting bigger yields and healthier vigor. (It's like a knock off of aeration growing systems) You only want to water everyday if you're growing in a rich sand medium, or very high draining mediums such as a 75% + perlite mix ext.... To me there is no need for this. Waist of time, money and energy. Also you might run into bud rot issue's watering everyday. But, I assume you have done this and it has worked (of course), next time try watering every other day and you can see the differences in the end. But this means you will have to grow the same strain and cut, then feed them identically to each other. (I've done several tests over the years on this) I find on a reg hybrid plant (that is not topped or trained) that grows to a medium too tall height, will yield (roughly, also depended on the strain you select to do this experiment) a quarter more. This however is if you meet certain requirements and have the optimal environment to grow in. To make sure everything is equal and even with every grow so you can get an accurate comparison ;)

Re: Arteekay's 1st Grow - Sunshine #4 - Spider x 4 - Crop King Autoflowering Mix Stra

I've been reading Emilya's work on this and she suggests using coco coir as a real hydroponic medium -- i.e. watering every day to runoff. I see the sense of that.

I grow autos in coco. My first grow I treated it more like soil than hydro, I didn't let it go dry but I was watering every other day most of the time. This time around I'm watering almost every day (some days life gets in the way) and things are going well, too. I'll have a bigger yield this time, but I don't know how much that means since I've changed a lot of things from my first grow to this one :) As KidGrow points out, it's hard to control for everything!

Re: Arteekay's 1st Grow - Sunshine #4 - Spider x 4 - Crop King Autoflowering Mix Stra

Personally I hate coco. It's hard to find a good coco medium in the market these days.. All of them are garbage in my personal opinion (tried a ton of "name brands" over the years) When you're growing on a commercial level and everything is 100% Organic, and is at a medicinal level, hydro systems and coco set up's aren't the way to go. Hense why all the worlds biggest & best cultivators grow in high brix supersoil <--- only way to go if you want top quality connoisseur medicine... ;)

Re: Arteekay's 1st Grow - Sunshine #4 - Spider x 4 - Crop King Autoflowering Mix Stra

Yeah, I hear what you're saying, KidGrow. Totally understand that, for pros. Hi-brix is clearly the way to go!

But, in defence of coco, for me, coco coir was a brilliant introduction to growing cannabis. I don't need a huge amount of weed (never going to be a professional grower), and although I could certainly supply other patients besides myself and my husband, I probably won't until legalization is a real thing here. I found it an intuitive medium, pleasant to work with (love the smell and the tilth) and easy to get great results, especially for a beginner. I was able to use inexpensive GH nutes with the coco on a clear and simple schedule and I got 3.5 ounces from my first two plants, which equals medicine for months and months :) My medicine from my coco grows may not be connoisseur level (that's why I'm looking at organic growing), but it's extraordinarily powerful, burns to a white ash and produced the most killer edibles I have ever experienced :) I get high just thinking about them, actually ...

Each to his or her own -- I find the variety of cultivation techniques fascinating and wonderful, but it's all really about this plant we all love and respect and what method best works for each individual grower and her or his situation :)

I'll definitely take the congrats, but I'm not sure I deserved this morning's Haze.IO win. I jokingly tagged everyone in the "who's online" page and voted in the poll.

But I will take the praise, it means the world to me honestly. Not quite as much as the look of the jars of curing weed downstairs, but right next to that. :)

Thanks Kingsnake. Glad to have ya onboard.

The weighing thing is equal parts data collection and an excuse to put them up on a pedestal every day so I can stare at their little girlie parts. :)

I'm sure we'll make it over to coco eventually at least as a trial, but right now I've got a Doc's kit grow to work out, and I really want to try DWC as well.

Add to that the fact that after our second grow completes, I think we'll take a two or three month sabbatical and actually grow some tomatoes and stuff. We're already floating in weed, by comparison to before Halloween when we didn't intend to grow.

Thanks for tagging in KG, I find it wildly interesting to hear the perspective of a large scale grower. Some things can't of course directly translate, but on the whole the lessons learned from growing in scale can't help but assist in a more hobbyist level grow.

One of the things I like about this Sunshine mix #4 is we can go a couple days, or up to a week or more in the early days, without having to do anything with them each day. Whatever medium(s) we grow with in the future will have to be able to take care of themselves for at least 48 hours for more than half the grow to be "acceptable" to our lifestyles at the moment.

Definitely hear you on the absolute fact that Cannabis needs a wet/dry cycle. Comparing our first and second grow at 30 days is just eye-opening. The first we overwatered fairly heavily, as all newbies do.

Always good to hear from You Glim, and of course it's hard to disagree with anything the water queen Emilya says. I'm guessing there's some differences in the quality of coco mediums, which may account for the differences in opinions of their drainage potential? I know I've read at least a few journals where the coco didn't seem to be draining as well as expected. Packed too tight maybe even. Who knows.

It's research for a much later day for me for sure. Supersoil and DWC first.

Thanks all, hope you're all having a great Sunday.

Yup, I sometimes forget about certain aspects of growing cause I've been doing it for such a long time, and have somewhat of a "one way mind" now. (which isn't good I know :( ), I also forget that everyone starts somewhere and loves to experiment until they find their own proven methods. After all, we all started at that point, myself included (kind of, my father was a hard ass and cultivated marijuana for the last 36 years of his life before he passed away a few years ago.. So, I guess his "strictness" came off on me a little bit lol :( ) So I'm sorry if what I say comes off as "The only way" It isn't. & you guy's are correct, to each their own and either way, we are all happy cultivators at the end of the day. I try to help as much as I can. I'm more of a happy fellow then a "Boss" anyways. I treat my guys the same way I treat my family.:Namaste:

If you do supersoil high brix first, you'll never go back or change lol ;) The buds get huge, no $ waist on chems and on the possibility of damaging the beautiful fish bowl we live in. The flavor & scents, is undeniably, incredibly, "orgazmically" mouth watering and nose enriching, on a whole different level. Especially when you hit the 25% + brix levels.. mmmmm lol I also like how you pointed out the fact of a commercial scale grower compared to a hobbyist grower. This is very true, and something I think I neglect to remember (and do quite often :/ ) Something I've actually been told before.. The main thing is tho, I love you all and we all mothers and fathers of the most beautiful healing plant on earth. No matter how one grows or cultivates, as long as our community sticks together we will all be successful in our missions. I wouldn't have it any other way. :Namaste:

So good I'm posting it again in full. Thanks and +reps for ya.

Sorry to hear about your father. I'm dreading the day I get that call. Think I likely have another 5-10 years if it's natural, but every time my phone rings I get a little apprehensive. My parents still use a phone to make phone calls.

Once we get this second grow over with and finish up a short sabbatical, I'm gonna be all over you and Shigs for a supersoil grow, you can count on that. :)

Thanks man, it means allot. IT was rough for the first year. I hardly ate.. Me and my pops where close. Very close.. I hope the best for you and I also hope he has longer, cause nothing will prepare you for that moment. Even if you know it's coming. (I just got goosebumps) :*(

Thanks for the +reps Art. Appreciate it :passitleft:

Re: Arteekay's 1st Grow - Sunshine #4 - Spider x 4 - Crop King Autoflowering Mix Stra

Time for Candi to get the boot from the tent, her tribute will follow this daily update.

I'm usually the one to get the girls out of the tent and up onto the table we use, so Jaybiz hasn't done it for quite a while. I've been telling him moving Britney is kind of like balancing a pool cue on end, butt end up. They both survived it, but it was clear he wasn't prepared for just how top heavy she is. It's a real challenge to move her now. We'll likely switch to weighing and feeding her in the tent with everyone else out before she gets much further into flowering.

  • Britney got full strength DNF Bloom A+B and half strength calmag+ at 901ppm and 5.7 PH.

Family pics

They don't exist, Britney has no remaining family. I think this is how the tent feels to her now:

Candi pre-harvest (87 days, 9.0 lbs) drying out for the chop:

You certainly run a great journal and dang! Jars of it!

 :slide: :yahoo:

I'm hoping I'll have more time available for your second journal. This was such fun to read. Regardless, I plan to stop in periodically. You guys hit it out of the park guys. :high-five: I hope I can come close to this level of excellence when I get up and running next week.

I could use a year of hardly eating, but I'd rather do it under healthier and happier circumstances for sure. Growing has been great exercise though, didn't expect to see any real health benefits until after we'd harvested. Down two belt sizes already! Been carrying around an extra 40 or 50 pounds for a decade, and thanks to this hobby i might actually outlive my father.

Anyway, pot induced tangents, sorry. Glad to hear you've come out the other side, can't imagine how it'll affect me when the time comes.

Everyone LISTEN UP! Go call your father or mother, RIGHT NOW!

So spaketh rtk!

:)

With the team of growers you have assembled on your new journal, I can't imagine there will be any problem you won't be able to overcome, both in this hobby and in just about everything you do. I just hope I can keep up with the pace of yours and still get to my journal every day.

Thank you so much for stopping by, it's always a highlight when you do.

Our SweetSue here carries a rep-stick that could knock a grizzly out cold! :)

This is so gracious and eloquent. I totally understood that you're passionate, very experienced and you're growing at a professional level and scale. Every bit of advice I've seen you give is helpful, expert and kind and I hope my own tone wasn't sharp. I just wanted to defend the needs of beginners :)

That's very moving about your dad. What an extraordinary privilege to have learned cultivation from your father, and how sad that you've lost him. My most sincere condolences.

So much love,

Re: Arteekay's 1st Grow - Sunshine #4 - Spider x 4 - Crop King Autoflowering Mix Stra

Today was the end of the line for our fifth girl. Candi, our (obviously, because I lack creativity) CKS Candy Cane autoflower was our most out of control plant. She blew past our height limit and forced us to supercrop her top so she'd fit into the tent with a light above her.

She never seemed to be affected by the cold floor to any degree, and it was her accelerated watering schedule that we forced onto the rest of the first four in 3 gallon round plastic nursery pots. The other three were overwatered because we failed to treat each as it's own separate entity and incorrectly grouped them all together with this one in a firm lead.

She should produce the biggest yield of the four, but she'll be pretty skinny once she dries out.

Anyway, she gets the now usual life tribute.

Two Weeks:

Three Weeks:

Four Weeks:

Despite what I said above, we overwatered them all by this time obviously...

Five Weeks:

Six Weeks:

Looks better looking down on her:

First time I took a top down picture, oddly...

It was also this week that we decided to try our first supercrop:

Before:

Her punishment:

Seven Weeks:

Knuckled up well:

Eight Weeks:

Nine Weeks:

Ten Weeks:

Eleven Weeks:

Twelve Weeks:

And finally today, before harvest:

We were going to do the usual "pluck the fan leaves and take pictures after", but once we got into her and removed the first support, it became clear how important that structure has been for her. She flopped open like a rag mop and we had to quickly cut and trim individual branches without interim pictures. Then we kinda forgot for a while, but we stopped for the supercropped part.

Tore the supercrop apart, for fun:

Roots:

Hanging in the tent:

She was 9.0 lbs before harvest, and 6.0 lbs with everything above the roots removed. So about 3 lbs of plant material.

Dry weights next weekend at the earliest.

Thanks all. Have a great night.
