Any idea what's doing this to the leaves?

It is possible that the dark green color is normal for that plant.

I can have two plants, different strains, side by side on the bench or in the flowering tent. Both getting the same fertilizers at the same dose. One will show darker green leaves than the other.
i've been growing this strain for 3 or 4 years with the same soil, it is always very dark green. The last one i cut the nutes back as well per Foxfarm's recommendation. It worked out then.

i tried to FIM, looks like I screwed that up lol. ... but still happy as it appears healthy now

Hi 013, do you have a source for that 6.3 soil target? It's just that I've been reading 6.5-7.0 to be optimal. I've worried about this before because tapwater around here is about PH9 with lots of additives, so I just give them spring water, which is 6.8 according to producer

Hey Landracey,

I’m definitely not the best person to explain this… but mostly by studying the work of Miss Emilya Green and others here at 420 mag. When you water the ph drifts as it moves thru the column of soil in a container. When you adjust ph to 6.5 you are missing the lower end of the soil range which is 6.3

When nutes are out of range for the grow media used - those out if range nutes are invisible to the plant. Remember ph is a logarithmic scale so missing by a little still misses by a mile. Target ph for hydro, coco, hempy $ soilless is 5.8 but for soil 6.3

Assuming chelated (most bottle nutes) here’s how to mix your soup. Draw the water into your bucket. Add cal-mag first then stir & wait 10 minutes or as we call it ‘“smoke break”. Add your NPK stir & wait 10 mins. Adjust your ph to 6.3 and feed right away.

If possible it’s best to mix small fresh batches of nutes each time. Once you get a good handle on it with several successful harvests under your belt then you can experiment more. I know Bill284 mixes a few days worth at a time but bear in mind Mr Bill284l been doing this since before Jed Clampett struck oil. The point is premixed nutes from a few days ago can drift ph plus they can also bloom nasties depending on which nutes you select,

Emilya wrote a few books about ph via the FAQ pages here helping newbies like me to better understand. If you want to read more of her work go to 420 search bar up top and type in PH then put Emily Green in the user name box and hit enter. She’s not been active here for a year or two but her volume of work lives on.

Plant looks great (maybe some defoliation ?) and healthy ---don't go down the rabbit hole - IT's GENETICS !!!!
(sure the plant does not look so great - some strange flower growth ) nothing really you did !!

I say just keep growing. My last grow lasted 5 months outdoors and being my first time outdoors I seen a lot of different things mainly bugs and it was a constant battle. The plant I had that looked strange to me was the best one I harvested.

Thanks for that detailed response 013. I am deep into my second grow and am feeling my way forward at a notch below the scientific level of detail of my peers. So, I am grateful for the input.

I’m a hack so far from science it’s not funny; but wanted to add I’m on well water, never tested, never cared. Normally I never ph my water but did for 1 plant grown hempy style it’s passive hydro done in perlite only so had to hit 5.8 mark all the way thru.

My plants aren’t perfect but for my dirt ladies they never get ph adjusted…

apologies for the thread jack dba1954

I've grown this strain (northern lights, indica dominant) 4 times before and the plant has this type of flowering. It suits my needs, puts out close to 3 oz per plant (I keep it short at 28-30"), decent potency for and old man and also not as smelly as others (keeps the wife happy lol). I might defoliate some after the stretch finishes. btw ... I'm keeping it close to 65000 lux now , giving it 1/2 strength nutes every other watering as from other grows I've learned it doesnt need it (at least in the foxfarm ocean soil). It's almost 22" today so not far to go.

I've only been trimming fan leaves that turned yellow.
I'd suggest you leave them on there until they fall off on their own. The leaves are a storage bank for nutrients and if they are turning colors or showing marks it's a sign that the plant is mining them for the top leaves and buds. So, cutting them off just means the plant will go looking for them from the next set up.

Are you feeding them enough?

fox farm soil nutes, week 11 so I believe so. Flushed it 2 weeks ago. I always though defoliating was bad and generally wait till they are spent but I do help it along some :) . The strain is Northern lights and has an incredible amount of leaves. This my 5 th grow with this strain, seems to progressing normally except for issues with my startup.

really consider removing all the lower leaves (about 3-4 inches from top of soil) for better air flow - it will work wonder's with increasing yields and all fans that are blocking light to your bud sites OR just "grow" it out being that plant is close to harvest maybe 2-3 weeks more BUT removing the lower leaves will not hurt plant at all

hard to tell from the picture but the lower leaves have been removed about 4-5" from the soil. They were actually the first fan leaves that were dying off as well as being the oldest.
