Right on Dabber! I went back and read this all. Thank you for posting that video on branch shaking! It made me so happy to put a voice to all the text and pictures. This certainly has become the light thread! Good timing as I am in the market for a new light or mover. Where do you start IF you are looking to build some of the lights you guys are talking about? I went over to the Timber site last night, $200 for a 200Watt light is not really what I'm looking for. Nor is $1200. I like my ViparSpectra 700 a lot. Especially since it was only $329. Thoughts?
Your vipar actually costs about the same per watt as a DIY build. The vipar, which isn't a bad light at all, I have one blasting over half the tub as we speak, just doesnt offer the coverage needed. They say it can cover a 4x4 tent at 24 inches.... I can't even cover my 2.5 x 4.5 tub with one.
The biggest problem with Chinese blurple is 2 fold. Coverage and penatration. Get it high enough to spread the light evenly and the par is too low. Get it the right distance and the coverage sucks cause of the small footprint.
Blurple and boards are the same in the regard that you want to space them S much and as evenly as possible. Ie 4 300 watt Chinese units in a 4x4 instead of 1 "900 or 1200 watt" units.
So let's back up. Right now the vipar costs 225 and gives you 285 watts. Well quick little tidbit, a good amount of that is lost in the 2 fans aboard the unit as well as the fact that some of thag is lost as heat. ARCTICS par 600 I'm borrowing is more or less a space heater...
So all that being said your paying 225 and getting MAYBE 250 watts of good useable light. Well let's go to the next point. Coverage and penatration. The secondary lenses and dense diode configuration is the opposite of what you get with a boards. More even light, less shadows, more penatration.
Here's the kicker 190 dollars (130 in boards and 60 for the driver) will get you 240 watts at the wall. So your actually paying less than the vipar and getting more power! Not to mention the true full spectrum of white leds versus blurple.
You spend less on electricity if you don't have to cool the light and or environment. You get a light with better efficacy and efficiency with white led, while fulfilling more of the plants needs. The return on investment is far greater, and your grow "pays for itself" in less time.
Shoot I mean I know I talk these lights up, and any DIY setups.... but come on, isnt it obious now why haha?
Hopefully this out things into perspective for you ripe. And as always it's GREAT to have you here!!!
