Alaskan1's Flo n Gro Mixed Bag Grow

i just read the bottom of his feed schedule and it says change solution every 2 weeks, but ive only got 1 plant in small res say about 1gallon and it wont be putting to much waste back into the solution on its own so im hoping it will last longer than 2 weeks, unless im not doing any harm by using it to feed the plants i have in pots

My experience change every 2 weeks. I've done it twice, gone 3 weeks because my res looked so clean, and they just suk up to many of one or 2 nuts and run into issues,

a 1 gal res I'd change weekly. I evap that much in waste a week :peace:

hows it mate, is it all under control, i gota agree with the post above i think soil is a whole lot easier, less to go wrong, and when it does go wrong soil is very forgiving, with hydro you got to keep a constant eye on things and one mistake could ruin the whole lot, and with root rot and other issues i think ill hold off on the hydro for now.

Considering that 6 months ago I didn't know jack about growing anything what would you expect? Mistakes and learning are part of the game. People who grow in soil don't have issues? If I was in soil I'm betting I'd have gone through some of the same issues. Root Aphids, spider mites, heating and venting issues are not hydro problems alone. The root rot? Yea probably more a hydro issue then a soil issue I'll grant you that.
Right now my biggest issue is my plants are growing too fast.

AK1, you're doing a great job on the grow, my friend, and you're 100% correct about every method of growing having its potential issues. Try overwatering plants in soil for a few weeks and you'll find root rot ("pythium") is not unique to hydro growers.

Pythium is actually in the air around us and the trick is to NOT give it an environment that's conducive to "making a home" and replicating. This can be a little more tricky in hydro since a warm pool of nutrient-rich water makes the PERFECT home for pythium!

I would focus on three areas to help prevent/avoid pythium (removing it is a different issue!):

1) Are my res temps in check? Once you start getting above 72* F, or so, risks go way up!
2) Am I providing good air/water circulation? Get as many bubbles in the res as possible and let the bubbler run constantly. Make sure water is never sitting stagnant.
3) Are all my plants healthy? The best defense for pythium is healthy plants. The pythium will attack weak plants and any unhealthy plants in the res will put the rest at risk.

FYI...I also have found Dutch Masters Gold Zone to be very effective in helping treat and prevent root rot in hydro using synthetic nutes, but should not be used with organics because it can kill the beneficials.

I hope this helps! :goodluck:

Damn, dude, I can only rep you so many times before it says I must spread the love...

Absolutely spot-on post. Everyone should rep for that one.

Mr Krip! Thanks for coming by and making that post

1. Check, I never let it get above 70 or else 1 gallon ice containers go in.
2. Check, I have 3 air stones in each res, all the data and research shows root rot hates air and beneficial bacteria loves it.
3. Check, I tossed the mother plant causing me most of my issues. All my clones now have 2 inches of roots or more before they go into the system.

Xlr8 uses Dutch Master as well and he raves about it...but this leads me to my question. I use hygrozyme and Orca (beneficial bacterias) Will using Zone kill all my beneficials? I know I can put in my beneficials after waiting 24 hours after putting in H202 AND BE OK.

I'd rather have either DM or Corey at BPN tell you which beneficials the DM Zone will kill. I can tell you that I've heard/seen bad things from using Hygrozyme with hydro. In fact, there's a journal from a grower who's no longer active named "ChrgrsFan" (I'll see if I can find it for you) and he had a LOT of problems with hygrozyme and swears that the only thing that fixed it was the DM Zone.

I had bought a bottle of Hygrozyme myself and, when I saw what happened to Chrgrsfan, I switched to DM Zone (I was growing in Waterfarms at the time, and not the hempys I now use). I still have that Hygrozyme on the shelf, although I've heard many growers swear by it and I'm sure it's fine in the right environment.

EDIT: Start reading Chrgrsfan's journal from THIS POST!

Also, I had send him a great article on the subject that he reposted HERE

The girls are dandy, shut the light off for good and will be pulling them Tuesday AM.

Hey A1! Good luck with the harvest, I hope all your nugs are dense and stinky :thumb:
You are taking photos right?

:peace:

hope alls well with the harvest mate, some great info above, i wasnt saying anything bad about hydro mate, just dont think its something a new grower should comit to without having some knowledge on how it works,

Only way to learn though is to jump in and do it. I got thrown into the deep end of the pool with no life jacket. THANK GOD I found this website and the people who have been so helpful and even if they didn't have advice they gave plenty of moral support. You can't buy any of this kind of help and support.

You can read all you want but until you actually dive in you don't get the experience that growing teaches you.
I'm a mechanic by trade and I can read a service manual on how to rebuild the engine but until you actually do a few rebuild a few engines do you get the feel and flow of things.

that is true, when i grew last it was 9 years ago, and i bought a clone and stuck it in compost, i had a fitting from an old street lamp, i turned it on to 18-6 and vegd it for way to long then switched to 12-12 all i used was some miracle grow nutes and i grew it and got more than 5 oz from it, this time i realised i was very lucky to get anything doing what i was doing, and now i know how much more could be done to increase yield and plant health, this site has by far been the main and sometimes only source of help and advice when i needed it, so i agree with you on everything you said, and this site stands out as one of the best.
have you ever looked at the member ship side of this site and the shop, i think their is more content that you can pay for such as the 420 girls in all their glory, some real nice looking girls,

as for jumping in head of feet first, well ive got a 2ltr dwc hempie, thats growing like crazy, i made the res the size of a full 2ltr bottle with just the top cut off, then placed my plant in the lid of another bottle and lowered onto the res, and as soon as the roots hit the solution they have gone crazy with loads of growth and they really do drink a hell of a lot of liquid, i was suprised.

ive also got an aerogarden with 1 plant in it, this is doing ok as well, i just gota decide when its best to empty the res, plus im a bit worried about using all my bpn up on these so might go garden center and buy something else that i wont mind replacing, for me to get bpn again i would need to spend around $100 just to get me the 3part plus bloom booster and thats for the smaller round bottles, so its not cheap for me to replace, and im amazed with the results so until i do a full hydro grow im a bit concerned about filling up and empty the res as its about a gallon of water in the aerogarden, is it ok to use the stuff i take out on my plants in soil or would i do more harm than good, my aero garden only has 1 plant in it and is sitting in a full res of liquid nute mix, it holds about a gallon and as its only 1 plant its not exactly using much off the solution, i have put an air stone in their as all that it normally does is pump the water up to the top of the lid to water the medium the plant is in, i didnt think this gave the solution enough o2 so i added a small air stone to boost oxygen, i have not emptied the res yet but not sure how often, i have been told around once a week, but it would mean using a lot of bpn on just 1 plant, i could probably justify it if i had 6 plants in their but it dont have the room to grow that many plants.

plus i really didnt think it would work at all, all i had was the aero garden which is the hood with the light in, this can be adjusted up and down loads as the plant grows, then on the base sits the res with the water pump in, then a lid goes on the res with 6 holes in it, well as it was not new it didnt have the net pots or what ever else it used, so i had some crazy idea to try and use one of my fish tank filters, so i cut a piece out and cut a hole in it so it would hold the compost mix and i put a seed in it and left it on. i didnt even realised it had worked as it was in the spare room, but i went in and looked and the plant had grown 3 inches so i was amazed it worked, so then as it worked i started adding some nutes, and now im giving it the veg 2 of bpn feed, but im not sure how often to empty and re-fill but using bpn on 1 plant i think is a waste so im going to go garden center and check what they got, i would pull the plant all together but its growing so well in the aero, it really does prove that hydro grows plants quicker than soil does, im not sure how it compares with outdoor growth as i have not grown out doors yet, but ive left it to life in the aero garden to see what happens.

im hoping to put 2 plants outside in the next few days the weather has jumped from below 10deg c to about 25deg c so over the next week its getting hotter and hotter so summer is here it looks, so time to pack my back pack with 2 sprouted plants and some compost and a small trowel and then im off to the spot i found to do some guerilla gardening, so all been well ill have 2 outdoor plants, sex unkown but i dont have enough fem clones to risk been eaten by rabbits so ill try some seedlings and see what happens

some 420girls on the part of the site that you pay for, im not sure how many people or growers on here are aware of this part of the site, it has a shop where you can buy a small amount of items like t-shirts and stuff like that, i think it would be a good idea to add this link to out signature,

dayum how many pound you got?
lol
good going man
mighty fine if i do say so myself
:thumb:

Thanks again Chronic !!!

I myself would be surprised if we got over a pound. I have some saying 2 but I highly doubt it. This first grow had troubles from the start. But, had to go through all this to get my second tent dialed in. I'm betting between 2 to 3 pounds on tent 2 but now that I've had my little accident in there with the light falling it will take a week for the plants to recover some and show me just how much really got damaged.

looking nice my friend, looks like you got some very nice bud to last you a while, im starting a new religion, i take donations in bud, its genuine honest, wheres the church i hear you ask, well when i got enough bud to pay the workers ill get it built till them i work from home, i dont do much preaching, but donations are more than welcome, lol, just gota think of a name to call my religion, errrr ill get back to you on that one, just label the package to the holey one,
