AKGramma's Perpetual Grow

All my potted plants, got nutes and a thorough watering today. The AK 48's are showing flower, finally. Even though I can't get my flowering unit light-tight, it always seems to do the trick eventually.

The sprouts all have their first true leaves, but they are too small to remove their collars just yet. I did water outside their cups, this time, to tease the roots towards the soil, food and water.

I transplanted the three clones. Two into 1 gallon pots, one back into a solo cup because she only had one small root. I'm keeping her in a baggie till she grows roots. Otherwise she will wilt.

Other than maintenance, there isn't much for me to do but feed and water, and trim a few leaves and dying twigs.

I finally have something worth taking a pic of. Plant's aren't all that pretty, but it shows how I handle plants of different ages in one veg unit.

Left side: Cream caramel (F) and a Jock Horror Fem Auto behind her. In the middle are the two AK 48 Clones I potted a couple days ago. The taller AK 48 is now tied down to encourage more branches without having to top her.

Left back: Two CBD Yummy's (Fem) possible auto, but since they are only 12" and 17" at 2 months of age, I don't think they are autos.

Right side: a row of baby Jock Horror Autos. Note that I clipped 23w CFL's to the bins to keep them compact.

Not shown are the pair of MARS 300's at the top of the unit with two auxilliary paired 23W CFLs, mounted in the corners.

All containers are 3 gallon kitchen trash bins (14" tall) except for the two 1 gallon pots in the middle. I use the tall bins for Autos and to keep the footprint small. You can see how many plants I can get into a 3' x 3' unit.

Nice work AKGramma! I like your organization of the space. I have some Gods AK47 regular seeds from Jordan of the Islands and I think of your journal every time I ponder them as a choice to grow next. I think its God Bud x AK 47, with the god bud being a potent indica leaning flavour.

:thumb:

I'm guessing that the AK 47 (a vigorous grower) x an Indica will make one heck of a large bush/tree! If you're growing indoors, you'll need to train with a heavy hand to keep it from hitting the ceiling!

Yeah that would be my concern lol. I don’t need a fight with an aggressive Sativa for my second grow lol

Might be a good candidate for scrogging, to keep her horizontal. You'll only need one plant, ;-)

I removed the solo collars from the Autos today, as they have their second pair of true leaves. Their roots are already 7" long! If they had been in a regular garden pot, they would be trying to switch to flower. This happened to me once and I ended up with a 7" plant, 1/3 of it a cola. Very pretty, but very very small.

Looking good on here gramma! Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season! ...

Looking good on here gramma! Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season! ...

You got this up so fast, you prolly saw the post with the old photos. I just reloaded the new ones, so hope you take another look. ;-)

I planted the autos at one side of the bins, because when they start crowding each other, I can turn every other bin 180, so the leaves aren't touching. Better use of the space with room to spread out, or to tie down if I need to. I've done this before but have no pics to show how it works. Will show you when these girls get big enough.

I've got 10 in a 3 x 3 ft space, so it might get a tad crowded.

Holiday ain't going so well for me. Have a severe parathyroid imbalance that makes me very lethargic and extremely grouchy, and I hurt all over, beyond the osteoarthritis. Plus the stress of finding transportation to the labs for tests, and all the Dr. appointments. All that will go away right after the operation to remove the benign tumor(s) on my parathyroid gland(s), so I have read. So am looking forward to the surgery!

On top of that, my AK48s in flower are failing 37 days into a 60 day flowering period. Leaves, stems, and flowers are drying up and those on the tips are only 3 MM in diameter. It costs me $40 a month in electricity for each unit I run. So today, I'm terminating the AK48s and shutting down that unit. They are 3rd generation clones and have been sh** since they rooted in June.

Other than that, it's nice and quiet here, and I am watching Forrest Gump on SPIKE TV to cheer me up. I must have watched FG a dozen times since it came out. I LOVE Tom Hanks' work! :-)

So funny we (the wife and I) started a family tradition of watching forest gump last night while we put out the presents for our little one. Sorry your day isn't going as smooth as you expected.... sending some love your way from up the road!

...

The failed AK48s are chopped down and drying in a bowl and the unit IS shut down. I'll have a good 1/2 - 1 cup of dried, ground herb for cooking. No trics, this time, but 2 MM buds at this stage wasn't worth another month of electricity and nutes.

Xmas day ended very well with a short visit from daughter and boyfriend. They gave me a fragrant bouquet of flowers that filled the house with a sweet calming scent, and a sample of home-made stuffed mushrooms. YUMMMMMMM! Transportation issues were solved for my trips to the doctors and labs and my surgery, which took away the stress.

Watched a run of M*A*S*H* episodes after Forrest Gump, and was feeling very much better by the evening!

2018 PLANS

I'm re-evaluating the wisdom of my trying to keep up a perpetual grow, which has recently been a futile effort to keep various ages of plants happy and healthy.

After what's in veg is harvested, I'll scale down my grows dramatically, since another of the family has discovered the thrill of growing his own. I don't need an overabundance of cured bud languishing in the the fridge, not being used. And I just cannot get the quality of bud my fellow Alaskans are getting, because I cannot afford the high-powered lights and the electricity that powers them.

That means that this journal will be retired later in 2018, and possibly a new one started for the smaller grow, growing out one small crop from seed to harvest before starting another. And no more cloning for me. Too much effort for so little return.

I've got to make it fun again.

I want you to do what is best for you. And I agree the power costs are absurd compared to the lower 48. I'm finding rather quickly also that perpetual grows are very needy. Not to mention what a pain in the you know who cloning is. I think your making the right call personally. I'm thinking I may be too lazy to grow multiple plants so once I get some good seeds it will be a grow one giant plant in the tub kinda thing.... because your right, if its not fun why do it? We shoiuld get joy from our hobby.

Be sure to drop a link when you have a new journal so we can follow along.

Merry Christmas

I will do that TMD! the link will appear in my siggy somewhere early to mid summer. I'm growing autos right now, so should have everything harvested by then.

Like you, I have a goal of fewer, but bigger plants, maybe just one or two in 5 gallons, trained to stay under 4 feet to allow for the stretch.

Good call, if its not fun then its not worth the effort, best to keep it small and cost effective. I am only a few hours south of you in British Columbia but the costs of living in a northern region are similar. Not so bad that I am in a city now but when we were in a small town the shopping and cost of surviving were tough. Had to get creative with the finances sometimes.
