Afgoo - First Time Seed Grow

Now that I think I am past the mites and very close to harvest I find a couple buds that have worms. The little bastards get inside the bud and start gobbling from the inside out.
How I noticed was I found a couple brown dead leaves on 2 buds.. I dove in to investigate and it looked like a problem since all the rest were healthy. I poked around and pulled the dead stuff off and little clumps of bud came off. Then in the middle I could see a big fat green worm going to town on my bud.. I pulled it out with my fingers, dropped on ground and stepped on it. I found like 3 or 4 more in other areas.

I found one worm was small and light brownish. I read where they eat the plant and it turns them green...

Anyone know what to do. My thought is just looking for any problems with the buds and if I see one probe around and pull out worms and kill. I think it is to close to harvest to do anything. Plus I don't think any sprays would penetrate into the bud to kill them.. If so it would be probably leaving residue on the bud and not good to smoke.

Bummer! Yeah, sorry to hear about the worm invasion!

Definitely don't spray them with anything at this stage. You're just going to have to try to pick them out as you go and after harvest.

What does your new loupe indicate when you check your trichomes? You can compare with my BBK and GDP microscope photos taken just before I harvested if you are not sure. :)

Those were my thoughts too Goose, not to spray.
I've been attending these free grow classes since the beginning of the year through my local dispensory. The instructor there recommended despite my 2 week harvesting estimate to spray the buds with something like "Safer Brand Catepillar Killer." He said the Hydroponics shop has an OMRI listed one called 123 something I think he said. Anyway he suggested spraying that (shake each bud) then after a few hours later mist the plant with PH 6.0 water (shake the buds) . Then he said a couple days after that then spray undersides of leaves, branches and soil with Azamax.

I still think your thought may be the better one. But if I can find an OMRI listed catepillar killer it might be ok. From what they say, at this time of year during the full moon is a common time when the white moths will land on your buds. Then they burrow in and lay their eggs. Then the worm appears and eats your buds from the inside out.. sucks ass big time. I pulled about 10 out already.
Then after the worm gets so big they make like some cacoon inside the bud with webs (All I need). This doesn't sound like anything new though and apparantly this is a common thing for the outdoor growers. One guy told me he stands out there with a fly swatter and swatting the white moths before they land...hahah . I can see myself camping out there overnight on guard waiting for the white moth.. lol

As for my trichomes, my loupe reveals that they are 100 percent cloudy with no visible signs of amber yet. The pistols are about 25% brown now.. I estimate harvest date in 2 weeks.

dude sorry about the worms!!! use them to go fishing!!! im surprised that the Azamax didn't keep them away!!!

hope you stop them before they ruin all your crop!!!

Thanks Aston..

But don't make jokes, I joked around about a buddies plants who got worms and a few days later
I found I had them.. They lay their eggs in the bud and you don't even know you have them till you start seeing some of the primary/secondary bud leaves turning brown and dying. Then you go to pull them off and chunks of the bud pull off with it. Then you see a big ass green worm smiling at you.

I could see they work fast.. Hopefully I got the major eaters..
I wonder if they keep eating even after you harvest.. that would suck
literally.

Man! Sounds like a nightmare! I sure hope that we don't have those moths up here in the Sierra. Its probably too cold for them at night even now, but you never know. Have not heard anyone I know up here suffering from an infestation which is comforting. You guys should check my latest journal entry for some photos I took tonight of all the Purple Urkle I've got flowering on the back hill. They are really going to town now! That moth of yours would have a field day with those Urkle buds if they are anywhere around our area!

Nice Astonr! :thumb:

That looks like a real even mix! You gonna chop now or wait for more amber?

do i still add in the molasses til "chop time"???

Hope you enjoyed the tric show!!!

Also one last thing,
I heard somewhere that you can take all the fan leaves off the plant at about a week before harvest to allow the most light to all the bottom buds?!?!? does anybody know anything about this or is an indoor thing like the 60/40 thing???

:peacetwo:

Nice! The magnification you are using there looks about like what I see through my 10x Loupe. It appears that you are getting really close to a good mix of cloudy to amber in those samples. You might want to wait a little longer for a bit more ambers to show up.

As far as pre chop trimming... I do that sometimes. I usually trim off all the yellow and yellowing leaves which when you are this close to harvest, doesn't leave much but the buds on the plant! ;)

It does help to get more light onto the bottom buds, and this can help speed the degradation of slower trichomes over to cloudy and or amber. If the plant is finishing outdoors, this is primarily caused by UV radiation.

SAD SAD SAD!!!

Unfortunately today is now harvest day!!! I am forced to harvest today due to the rain that casted upon my ladies all this morning!!! I got to them at 8 this morning and talking with someone else, found out it had been raining since 4:30 this morning, so i built up a drying area and have started chop time!!!

pix up after all done!!!

Sorry to hear that you were forced to chop earlier than you had planned. Hopefully you can dry the buds thoroughly enough that you can still end up with a decent harvest.

I would suggest putting some fans on the buds and cranking up the heat and trying to keep humidity levels low.

Unfortunately for all of us growing and finishing grows outside, we are coming into that time of the year where the weather starts to play a bigger and bigger role in our harvesting decisions. Right now I am tracking some pretty large Thunderstorm cells between our location and Yosemite park. If they drift out our way, I could be dealing with something similar or worse than what you're going through.

Hang in there! Like I said, if you can dry your buds, it won't have much of an impact on the quality. Keep us posted!

Cheers.

Great Job Aston, your plants look nice and healthy.
I'm battling bud worms now and hope I can salvage at least 80% of my crop.
I think I battled some of the worst bugs this year. I have a different strategy for next year. Hope it is better.

So Aston, due to the rain you didn't get a chance to let your plant dry out for 4 days ey? I'm going to try to do that, but like you mentioned we have to battle mother nature. My target harvest is 9 days from now.... If I can make it.

Thats a good plan BudMan if I may say so! :)

I think Aston will still do fine with his harvest in terms of the medicinal effects His cloudy to amber ratio was pretty darned close to being spot on for harvest in my opinion, so I don't expect he will be disappointed at all! :)

Sorry to hear that you are still battling the darned worms! Man! I can only imagine how frustrating that must be to deal with! My only issue up here is Powery Mildew which as you know is native to the forest floor and impossible to erradicate up here in the Sierra.
