A New Top LED Panel for Testing

I know it is too soon for a final report on the LED light you got from TOPLED , but do you have some insight on your current opinion of them? I ask because I dont know that I can wait for the end of your grow before I buy my lights.

This panel so far has done exactly as advertized and I have no doubt I will do well in bud.

I have not bought this yet..still thinking about it. .to me..its a lot of $..I need to do more research.

I can replace a 400 watt MH hood and toasty ballast with a panel pulling 150/250 watts no bulbs to buy the power and bulb savings brings the cost into line.

So I am thinking now about starting with a 3'x2'x5' tent and a 144x3w panel hoping to get 2 plants to veg and flower using LST methods. Any thoughts?

That sounds like a nice setup. That will get you going veg to flower. I would not veg for a long time and choose a strain that is known to be compact.

Well being the newb that I am do you have any suggestions as to how long to veg and what strains you have found to be compact? I know your not a teacher just hoping you might share some wisdom :thumb:

Most pure indicas are compact like Northern lights or Black Domina. When your ready to buy some beans make sure to read the description and characteristics of the strain, they usually tell you how the plant grows:)

Thanks Jon, with all the sponsors there are so many selling "beans" as you put it lol. Any suggestions on a good dependable discreet source ?

The sponsors at 420magazine would not be around if they were not dependable, when you pick a vendor ask about shipping, most are discreet. Jon is right something more indica would be the ticket. I would let them get no bigger than the last post of my seedlings and put them on 12/12

Have you ever used the LST method before Buck? I am thinking that should help keep them shorter and make for more bud sites with less concern about light penetration. But I can be completely wrong also.

I am in a similar boat right now. I'm needing to get a good light source to cover a 3'x4' area. I actually have one of these Bud Buddy | but I only got the box as I felt I could do better and have more versatility if I were to gather the rest of the components on my own. I really like it as a piece of solid furniture that can be a bit discreet if need be. It also has the ability to remove the shelf and grow larger plants should I not want a perpetual in it at the same time. I'm not on a fast track to get it complete and growing and have plenty of time to research, compare and get exactly what I want. While I suppose I could get a couple lights for different stages, I'm hoping to get something that can veg, flower and allow my plants to get close without getting scorched. Despite the fact I've seemingly looked at everything offered, I still am not sure what might be the absolute best solution. I have confidence Sara has something that would fit the bill, but I still don't know exactly what that might be. Accordingly, I too am open to suggestions.

I know the Area-51 says it's coverage area is 2.5'x3.5' which is almost the exact dimensions I'm looking to cover, but while cost isn't much of an issue, I'm still too frugal to spend more than I need to and continue to browse TOPled's products. I like the 3w reflector veg/flower light idea, but...still undecided.

lst training is for spreading the plant out, it changes the plant from an x-mas tree to a shrub, the more you lst the wider the plant will get so it might not be the tecnique your looking for bro, I suggest UBT topping, it stands for Uncle Bens Topping method. Let the plant grow unmolested lol...until you have 4 nice side branches, what I mean by that is there can be alot more branches on the plant, leave it alone until you see 4 nice thick side branches and then top right above them and remove anything below them so you left with 4 main branches so 4 main colas, you should be able to do 2 plants in your tent with this style of training as long as you dont let them get to big before you flip to 12/12. Most indica dom strains will double in size, so even though the tent might not look full but it will fill in during the 21 day stretch, the more indica in it the less it will stretch which is what you want.

ok, so you dont think 2 plants using the LST method can grow in a 3x2 space?

well...if 2 x 3 is the size from wall to wall then you really only have 1.8 x 2.8 give or take because you dont want the plants touching the tent, the leaves transpire or "sweat" if the leaves are touching the tent they will sweat more there and this can cause mold issues. So that gives you 10 inches by 16 inches per plant, you will have to flip them when theyre very small to not overcrown the tent and not use all the height thats available, personally I would only grow 1 plant in that space, then you can lst or ubt or whatever tecnique you want and since your new to growing maybe working with one plant for now until your comfortable would be better.you will get the same weight with one larger plant than 2 smaller ones, it all boils down to gram per watts but thats a whole other topic:)

I agree with John... that method would work well in your area. I do HST when needed (High stress training) I snap the tops right over. Careful as I have snapped tops right off :cheesygrinsmiley:

how much do you generally get out of your 1 LST plant grows? I am not to familiar with SOG

My first one in that space got about 1.5 ounces, but I had a few hiccups in that run. Right now im in week 8 of veg with a giant bush(not as awesome as jons) just waiting for my new bulb then I will flip to 12/12 and put my 400 overhead.

I guess my question right now is...What would be considered "too much" light for a 3x3 or 3x4 area?
the more the merrier bro, you probably couldn't fit "to much light" in a tent using led's, its all about height, the bigger the panel the further away it needs to be and the more "shadows" you will have, if you plan on sticking with the 3 x 3 tent then 2 smaller panels like ufo's maybe angled a bit would give you better coverage but then again this light im testing right now would work great in a 3 x 3 space too, depends on your budget really.

Which light are you testing Jon? Do you have the link to a journal?
