A Little Help Needed To Evaluate Trichomes

We also plan to make some butter and tincture. So hopefully we have enough to go around. The thing with edibles, oils, and tinctures is once you consume it, you're in for the ride, so I definitely make sure I test the batch in increments.
Oh yeah. The only sane policy.

I've got a good friend, who likes to say that everyone that eats edibles has at least one story involving:

--it's not that strong, I'll consume more...

A bit later: Still not doing anything, so I'll take some more

& a bit later: I'm too stoned, can somebody please help me!

I also make edible oil out of fan leaves both wet harvest and dry. @andIhalped recipe will work well for you. I like to use the lecithin in my oils as it helps bind the oil to your fat cells and seems to make the high last longer, in my opinion;) Good luck and happy cooking:)
Thanks newty. Had wondered why the lecithin. :)

That's so accurate! I know so many people who had too much of an edible and totally regretted it.

Here in CA the edibles got curtailed to a 100mg limit en total. I thought that a bit of a nanny state over reaction with a smudge of political pandering tossed into their miracle law making machine. No matter to me because I grow but for others situated similarly to me but lacking cannabis and cooking abilities the picture's bleak. Dispensaries I think are gaming the price for profit and blaming the pols. At this point I can help a few folks but.....

I'm always out to do more with less.

In the following I usually use about a full shopping bag of trimmed fan leaves (wash 'em first)

My simple oil:

Spread leaves & trim on a baking sheet & decarb at 230F for 45 min. (easy enough to decarb in oil, too).

I break up the brittle decarbed leaves in a cast iron dutch oven w/ enough extra virgin olive oil to cover (I seldom measure anything). Give it a stir & then:

Put it in the oven set at 190F. My oven's pretty accurate--I've I spot checked the ambient temp+that of the oil, both have always been nearly 190F. Let it go for two hours.

Some folks use the lecithin, but I don't---I never have any, because I don't use it in anything else & I won't buy single-purpose items.

Cool & strain through tripled up cheescloth (I don't mind the cannabits anyway).

About a teaspoon gets me pretty ripped. Mellooooooooooow high.

The oil tastes just like the weed, which is pretty durn tasty.

Easy! & nothing much to clean up, too. This technique doesn't require any added gear, double boil set up, machines, or the cleanup of all that other stuff.

Also let's see if grower extraordinaire @newty answers the bat phone on this thread...I know she's a big fan leaf oil fan.

For more ornate, gear-intensive (and messier) approaches check out Fresh Harvest Infused Cannabis Oil
I like to do mini experiments each year changing stuff around and then one sees effects or not. How much lecithin I wonder do you not use Andihalped, since I already have a pkg of the stuff. (smile)

Maybe @newty will chime in on how much lecithin to add since I don't remember how much I don't use;)

As I dimly recall, some folks also make hash outta trim...If you're interested in that, you could check in the hash section of 420.

I use 1 tsp of lecithin per 250 ml of oil used.

2 cups oil = 2 tsp lecithin

I add it during the infusion process but some add it after they strain. I’ve done both and don’t notice the difference personally. I do however notice if I forget the lecithin and then will warm the oil and add it later (if I forget).

I've heard of people making hash, I was unaware you could use trim though! That's awesome, I always figured you had to use the keef. I'll have to check that section out!! Thanks!

I've not made it before but kief some cannabis each year. Potency is not an issue for me so much tho a Wiz lady cut and drying nicely and 2 GG4 plants that will be cut in a few days promise some proto-hash will be deposited on rubber gloves from my doc helping me to manage pain. If I figure out how to work the hash from loads of gluey resin I'll let you know. There was fine hash in Southeast Asia back in the day that gave many of us the first taste, and Afgani too. How I would have loved to run thru a patch catching resin on my shirt with the local folks. Make hash, not war!

I think I will indeed harvest a cola or two now (after about 5 days flush) and then complete the flush before harvesting the rest. This might give me a good bit of personal info on whether I can tell the difference in taste and high.

If getting the nutes out is a concern and you don’t want the trichomes to mature more you can water cure your buds. Just google water curing weed and you’ll get all of the info you need. Water curing gets rid of all of the stuff you want and leaves the good because trichomes aren’t water soluble, but you do loose some of the taste and smell. Water curing takes about a week, then you just dry and smoke. Very smooth smoke with the same potency in a fraction of the time. I’ve done it on my last 4 grows and I love it. I usually water cure a quater of my harvest and air cure the rest in jars

That's super interesting, I've never heard of water curing! So the process is you trim, dry, water cure, dry again, then ready to smoke?

Process is

Trim but you can leave the leaves that have trichomes on them and water cure those as well. I know this is going to sound crazy but you submerge your buds in room temperature water (too hot or too cold can damage the trichomes) inside the jars. You can put a top on or leave the top off and use something to weigh the buds down. I use a pill bottle filled with water to weigh mine down. You want to keep everything below the water to prevent mold on the buds. Leaving the top off is supposed to let the chlorophyll evaporate. You’ll change the water out every 24 hours. What this does is by submerging the buds it gets all the nutrients, salts, chlorophyll and other stuff out of the buds because they are water soluble. Trichomes are not so they stay in place. The first couple of days the water will be brown after the 24 hours which is all the bad stuff coming out of the buds. Each day you’ll notice the water is clearer each day. Once it’s pretty clear pour the water into a bowl and test it with a TDS meter. Once your PPM is what the water you’re using is on it’s own you know your buds are clean. Then all you do is dry it like normal and smoke. A couple things to note though is you do loose the smell and taste of your strain but that’s a good thing for being stealthy. Because the water turns brown it will turn the buds to a brownish color. Also, even though trichomes are not water soluble you can damage them if you aren’t careful. I slowly pour the water into the jars up against the side of the jar so I’m not pouring directly on the buds possibly knocking some off, and when I’m pouring out the dirty water I do it very slowly. There is no need to dry before you water cure because you’re putting them in water anyway. Just trim, water cure(usually 7 days), dry and then enjoy.

I've smoked water cured buds & it's smooth, but it does obliterate the inherent flavor of the grow. which makes it not for me.

Have a good buddy who grew up in Michoacan. Told me that's basically how they collected & made hash: ran thru fields of ripe flower on hot days & then scraped the resin off their clothes. He's told me that it was some of the best hash he ever had.

That would be fun to try.

My running days are warm memories bro like those memories of hashes past, but as this purloined thread continues I imagine you, and L. and I and others passing a bowl of the best stuff around. Cheers!
