420's Canuk Seeds Comparative Grow By Absorber

Really enjoying the discussion of the sneaky roots. :cheesygrinsmiley: Running the flood and drain, I've ran into a few root issues. My first time running with the flood and drain pvc tray cover, the plants had gotten kinda large and the flood had been over for 45 minutes and the reservoir was still half full. My roots in the tray had started following my inflow hose back down into the reservoir. No fun. I solved it by cutting a maintenance hole in the top of the pvc tray just a little to the right of dead center above the inflow and overflow in the tray. A little to the right because I'm right handed.:) It would have been nice to have a youngun with small hands.😎 So, every so often when I'm doing my daily checks, I move the maintenance cover over and reach in and clear the roots on my screened over inflow hole. :) One grow I put the tray cover on, and didn't pay attention to the position of the maintenance hole. It was on the left now. Real pain in the arse the rest of the grow trying to do it with my left hand.:bong:

You could turn around and do it behind your back with your right hand 🤣🤣🤣

They are little buggers ,im contemplating fitting a section of clear hose as it comes out of the reservoir/buckets then wrap led strip around clear pipe and print a cover so I dont upset the plant light cycle . That way the roots should avoid growing up the pipe and the screen should stop residual light hitting the rootball .
Thats what im tossing around and possibly having one of those fishtank magnetic glass cleaners in pipe to clean algae.

Thailand has a super high crime solving rate. They all snitch on each other. Families shop their Mum and Dad the cops they think there’s a reward in it! 😅

Luckily I didn’t write anything & Co doesn’t tell them each time they call up asking for money off her 😂

Hey Sorbs - I was reading something about Netafim irrigation dripped last night. Just thought how it might apply to you and GV

The irrigation and DWC suppliers have rules for it apparently. This applies to my needs which is to prevent particles entering the 3mm feed tubes so appreciate its different.

I bought these which top right corner look like they’re in the correct range:

So far so coco growing with automated irrigation.

But I started looking at what other people were doing on the smaller scale and the best thing that I read was

“A 5 gallon paint strainer for $2 from Bunnings, wrap it inside the pot with your airstone inside that and never get root clogs again”

From another board. Might have added Bunnings in my self 😄

The roots are gonna go with the water flow aren’t they? The current will take them there So once they block that section in front of the exit pipe the water can still flow into the “moat” section from other sides of the pot.

If you just covered the pipe section it’ll clog and you’ll have to cut them (which is fine) but you have a “Nick’s DMZ Moat™ System” then problem solved?

Nick with 6 Sisters in Law 😅

Do you have pre filters before your drippers? I have nothing but I drilled my dropper holes bigger to get a faster flow.. probably why I get issues in flower 🤣🤣

The net is not a bad idea as I have 40mm over flows so would be easy to fit and try.. as long as it doesn't slow the flow of water at all.. if it worked I probably wouldn't even open the buckets at all 👍

@Absorber I'm over here avoiding light at all costs and you speak of adding light 🤦‍♂️ them magnetic runners are wack you'll need a sucker fish 👌 he'll probably be blinded but he won't get far anyways 🤣

The light would need to be UV, wouldn’t it? You want to kill the roots?

I like the magnet idea but with razor blades in a bracket. I mentioned this elsewhere 😂

IMG_9612.jpeg

A bracket with one or more of these fitted inside attached to a pole. Once a week or whatever, plunge the pole down and shave the roots. Can you send me some of the razors, not shaved in about a week 😂

But I like the filter idea, as long as you can keep it with a spacer or something not sucking it over the egress hole.

Sorta like this, a solid basket probably better. The roots may even spread out better as they follow the path of least resistance?

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes I learnt the first week to fit a filter in the main reservoir right after the pump ,i was constantly getting slowing flows .
I just have visions of roots getting through net and net blocking up with fine particles.

Buy higher flow rate drippers 😂

Our big ones, collars we’re about 12 minutes a feed, that gets to 40L Our solos 3 minutes but thats only 4-5L

We have filters in the manifolds. Cleaned then the first time in 8 months. Yuck! Stank. But the small drippers we had first time clogged - they were also adjustable but just meant the adjustable bit fell off. Paid a tiny bit more, I think they were like $5 for 20 Netafim 2/L and hour and added the filters. After 3 weeks they are still same flow rate. They have 5/10L an hour as well. Then you go to the collars like we have for bigger than solo pot size. 12cm and 25cm - but you have those right? 12cm?

Yeah we found once they’re clogged they’re clogged. Chuck ‘em and buy new plus filters 😅

I have the dripper lines but I don't have a spray or dripper end on them

Yeah that's the ones.. Im feeding 2mins at lights on that's all atm. I'll look into some filters but never tested run off rates they just look ok still 🤣 and was planning on changing the insides of my drippers to the 4mmT and tubing.

That's what I have for my DWC 4mm feed pipes on blast constantly 🤣 but when I drain my system back through the 4mm pipes it's long! So will be fitting larger drain holes at the bottom for the next run. Need to save time!

I fill with four 4mm lines and drain with two 20mm lines 😊

The grey/beige Netafim I think is 3mm - black standard garden rubbery is 4mm. That 3mm on the collars to remove you gotta cut it then use a pair of pliers pull the bit over the barbs preferably having warmed it with a lighter.

Doesn’t leak though! Also its allegedly smoother on the inside so micro particles can’t collect.

I'd like to see what happens with the leds on the clear hose. :) I'm not sure what the fishtank magnetic glass cleaner is.

I checked - standard LED will do nothing to roots. UV will kill’em. Part the reason our waterfilters at home run through UV as well as all the filters.

You put one half in the tank and the other outside - they’re magnetic. The one in the tank has a cloth/brush on it so cleans the inside of the tank as you move the brush round the tank with the outside one. To go round corners, just move to the top reach in and oull the inside bit out and move. When you have a 80cm deep tank on a 1.5m shelf dropping the inner bit is really annoying.

Someone told me 🤣
