300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports Competition - GrowLEDHydro 300w LED vs. 400w HID

I agree, those Honeywell pivoting fans are excellent.

If you can score one locally Irish, that might be the cheapest and best option.

The airstream on those fans is nice and focused, so works great for vertical.

i have one i think just like his? but its so strong on the lowest setting it would be way too much for my plants. its also very very loud. but it moves lots of air, the strongest fan that size i have felt. mines a 12" one. and its digi on the power setting so i ave to tap the top because of the blue led light.

either way i still need another one since i am running two grow areas, ill use that one once my girls get allot older and ill see if they can handle it? but i haven't used it vert so it might not be that bad? ive only used it to bounce off of the walls to hit my plants. i cant remember how much i paid for mine? i thought it was around $40-50 but cant remember?

Hi Sun :)
Still bumping along with you. Your indoor grows are wonderful old friend. Always amazing photos and beautiful plants. :MoreNutes:
You have it down to a science now, actually for a long time now.
Do you remember where you saw that rainwater collector.....looked really interesting and would be nice to have.

Now your doing Videos! Great!:clap:

i love the video updates, maybe some time ill get enough balls to do a video update on youtube and show my buds.

12" is too big holmes, lol

Yeah, no doubt - I've been using my 4" vortex pointed straight up to send a stream right over the vert. bulb - cheap 3 speed fan controller works great and without the buzz of the variable speed controllers.

Sun, those girls have rebounded right into perfection... :MoreNutes: :yummy: :adore:

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports Competition - GrowLEDHydro 300w LED vs. 400w HID

Your ladies are looking very sexy SS! I'm real interested to see how they turn out in the end and what the comps look like. These LED's are our future and it's pretty cool watching the technology develop.

I was recently looking for some fans for my cab and both kmart and home depot were sold out. I ended up getting a 200cm computer fan. It's decent but I need something with more air flow.

Damn winter, why was I not smart enough to buy my fans during summer time?!

Since I switched to the 9" fans, I'm having to water the HID plants every other day, and the LED plants every 2-3 days. It's keeping the ladies cool and mold-free, however, so I'm very OK with that.

Hope it makes a difference on your summer grows. I think it will, and if you're going to be using 5-gal pots and soil, you shouldn't have to water too often, but my watering frequency increased significantly.

Part of the reason my garage felt like a steam bath during the rainy days was all the water the plants were processing and transpiring.

Temps always seem to increase in my tents as they get filled up with growing plants, and the HID tent was running a little higher than I like at 83-85, so I compensated for that with more air circulation, which scavenged the tents better and brought my temps back down to 79-80, but at the expense of lots more transpiration and need for water.

A better solution is to upgrade my exhaust fan(s), as that would drop temps and not have as much effect on watering, so I got a Suncourt Centrax 4" 200cfm exhaust fan for the HID tent in order to keep temps equalized between the tents.

The HID tent will now have more ventilation than the LED tent, but the S&P fan in the LED tent is working very well since it doesn't have to pull through a hood and a bunch of additional duct, so I'm going to keep using the S&P fan in the LED tent.

The Suncourt fan is speed controllable (unlike my S&P fans), so I'll be able to dial-in the temp in the HID tent so that it matches the LED side.

The brown truck of happiness just dropped the new fan off at the front door, so I can't wait till lights come on in a couple of hours to install it.

I plugged it in to play with it and to see how it worked with a speed controller, and I'm very happy with it. It moves a *lot* more air than my S&P fans, and it's still fairly quiet, though not as quiet as the S&P's, but I can't really compare noise until I get it installed.

I love setting up new grow gear ;).

I was out in my garden shed at 2am this morning, doing a little work on my LR2 grow that I'm finishing with a 150w HPS since growth had kind of stalled with the cold weather and shorter days.

Thought about how many other peeps in my town might be up at 2am happily working on their grows as if it was the most natural thing to be doing, because it is for me ;).

I'm always subbed to your journals OMM, even though I don't drop in very often these days.

Your SLH ladies got my vote for POM. You did a great job with those ladies!

The pic of that big rain barrel was something I saved a long time ago from who knows where, so I don't remember where I found it, but if you google "rainwater collection" you should be able to find a similar setup.

I'm going to get something like that once I convince Mrs. Sun that a huge plastic barrel next to the house won't look too hideous, lol. Mrs. Sun puts up with a lot, but you have to time these things properly ;).

I don't think I'll ever have growing "down" to anything, much less a science.

If I ever say I've got my game down, slap me upside the head hard enough to deflate it ;).

thank you for visiting and for your kind words, my good friend.

as always, grateful our paths have crossed ;).

I was really disappointed when I tried using a speed controller with my S&P fans. They buzzed and hummed, and the speed control was everything but linear. The only way to do it right with these types of fans is with a variac 120v controller, but they're a lot more expensive and the S&P fans are quiet at full-speed, so I didn't need the speed control with them anyway.

Sun, those girls have rebounded right into perfection... :MoreNutes: :yummy: :adore:

They're doing very well now. I switched from cal-mag in the RO to 1 Tbsp epsom salt per gallon, since the last thing they needed was additional calcium, and they're doing very well.

I'm going to be doing a thorough weekly flush anyway to make up for my bonehead move of not rinsing the coco before using.

If I like PPP, and the yield from both tents is acceptable, I may repeat the same grow in soil with a CRF.

The Dynamite purple is doing a great job on this grow. I haven't added anything else at all nute-wise except for the N in the cal-mag, but now not using that anymore, so it's basically a "just add water" grow.

Using soil, I could go with tap water and not even have to add the epsom salt or cal-mag, but our tap water is blended from two sources, and just isn't consistent enough for plants as valuable as MJ.

thanks OBX, always a pleasure when you drop in ;)

thank you Marley!

seems a lot of the stuff we use is seasonal at HD and X-marts. In spring, they sometimes even have bags of worm castings and bat guano, but it goes fast.

Probably bought up by all the local personal MJ growers ;).

you'll be primed and ready next summer ;)

yup going back to 5 gal pots, still thinking about the soil, but some reason in my mind everything tells me to go back to SS#4 with 50/50 perlite/SS#4. ive notice with more perlite it over rides the peat moss and the PH, because this grow PH wasn't a problem. at the end of the day i am like you when picking my medium ill chose the last min.:thumb:

ah u got my fan? i am ordering mine right now! did u get it from that one place i showed you? or did u find a better place? also it doesnt come with the cord right? is it a 3 prong or just like the S&P fan cord? those fans kick ass bro, allot cheaper then the wintunnel. its louder then the S&P but also more CFM. i am ordering mine right now since the cat is out of the bag.lol

i am going to run the 4" 200CFM in my led tent in my room, then i am going to run the 6" 410CFM in my other 4x4 tent when i get it, not thats going to move some air and help in the summer time.

Hi Sun Man I hear you....too much going on in 420 now to keep up with it all. Drives byes are the norm now. Doing a journal right takes more time now too. Our visitors are our most important people.
No slap warranted. Your still on the ground with both feet!

Timing is everything when wanting something new. A nice dinner out maybe?

Will look for the rain barrels.

Sure glad we crossed paths too! :surf:

2.5 WEEKS BLOOM

Here's a few pics of my new Suncourt Centrax 4" 200cfm exhaust fan:

IMG_7385.JPG

When the weather's cold, I vent the exhaust into the garage to warm it up, and when it's hot, I vent the exhaust up into the attic to help keep the garage cooler. Both options are very effective in helping to manage ambient temps in the garage.

It's a fairly quiet setup when venting into the garage, but it gets almost eerily quiet when venting into the attic. I wish I could vent up there all the time, but it's real nice to heat the garage with "free" heat too.

Here's some comparative temps I took at different times after installing the new fan in the HID tent:

IMG_7355.JPG
IMG_7356.JPG
IMG_7357.JPG
IMG_7362.JPG

Pretty darn close with the Suncourt fan running at full steam. It needs to be at full speed in order to come close to the temp in the LED tent, so I'm not using a speed controller, although this fan does work fine with one.

Using my hand to estimate the exhaust flow from each fan, I'd say they have about the same flow rate. The Suncourt fan has twice the cfm rating of the S&P, but is pulling through a hood and lots of duct, so winds up performing almost exactly the same as the S&P fan in the LED tent, which just works out very well for keeping things as equal as possible environmentally.

As it turns out, the ventilation in the HID tent is not greater than the LED tent after the HID fan upgrade, so that has not been affected. Ventilation is now very equal due to the much higher drag in the HID tent, and so temps are very similar also. That Suncourt fan turned out to be the perfect upgrade for this grow to keep things equal between the tents.

It's a great fan too. Solid, well-built, well-balanced, and very quiet for how much air it flows. Most of the noise it makes is from the airflow, not mechanical noise from the fan itself. Only consumes 40w. Great product, IMO. They make bigger ones too.

Took the largest plant out of each tent for a side-by-side. Very little difference in stretch between these two, although in general, the LED plants still averaging about 3-4" shorter by eyeball estimation.

Remarkably similar IMO for having been grown with *very* different lighting. Trips me out actually.

I mean, there's some differences, but they're on the subtle side and I expected much more difference by this stage of the grow.

The HID plants, again, average about 3-4" taller overall, but the tallest HID plant is only 22", and they look like they're done stretching, which is very cool because I was running out of headroom in the HID tent. I was getting some heat stress at 15", and raised the 400w up to 18", with much happier plants now.

I raised the LED light up to 17", as it has plenty of intensity at that height and I don't want to bleach or burn anything on this grow.

The HID plants, while doing good, aren't quite as dark green as the LED plants, but I'm working on that ;).

I'm going out of town again tomorrow for a couple of days and may or may not have internet access, so if I'm not here for a couple days, that's where I am ;).

:thankyou:

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports Competition - GrowLEDHydro 300w LED vs. 400w HID

Gorgeous plants SS. :yummy: Love the fan porn. I need to scrap the cheap axial fan (weed wacker) I bought to test ventilation. So loud that I can hear it outside through the garage wall. I'm working with an unfinished garage and the temp daily swings are about 20 degrees.

Very interesting how close the two sets of plants are. Guess the final proof will be in the smoking.

Hope the trip is for fun and relaxation. :surf:

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports Competition - GrowLEDHydro 300w LED vs. 400w HID

IMG_7381.JPG

hmmmmmmm, the missing lower fan leaves on the HID plants *isn't* such a subtle difference, but I didn't notice it much until this update.

I removed more of the lower foliage from the HID plants because of burn from the salt toxicity issues.

Wondering if I should snip some of the bottom fan leaves off of the LED plants to even things out?

What do you guys think?

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports Competition - GrowLEDHydro 300w LED vs. 400w HID

If you don't need to because of air flow reasons or anything I'd leave them. No reason in taking a chance at lower yields due to less solar panels. I think that the hid plants having problems is part of the equation. No sense in taking away from the led plants because they didn't suffer the same stress. That might just be another advantage for using led's. Just an opinion.
