1st Hydro Grow

SouthernWeed! looking real good man those plants are looking healthy! Those roots also look real healthy! i can see those white hairs! i bet your excited as much as i am! cant wait to see them fill! keep up the good work! +REP

Thanks for the rep L8...and yes, I am excited. But I am completely out of room with this setup, so I'm going to head over to wally world and buy a larger tote this am and build a larger res system. need one about a foot longer and 6" wider I believe. I'm just not happy with the light thats getting thru, even with the 2 cfls so I'm going to get the girls a larger house...problem solved!

Tortured...haven't seen you around in a couple days but I'm sure you're still there so here's the stretch report. They seem to have stopped with the vertical growth. Average height gain for the 4 WD was 10.5 inches...plants range in height from 22" to 25 5/8". After I move them into a new res I'll keep a close eye on them and see if they start stretching again.

Y'all have a great day...will post pics of the girls in their new home this afternoon!

Just got back from running all over hell's half acre looking for the right tote for the plan I have, but couldn't find one. Well, I did find one place that had what I wanted, but they were sold out. Going to try back Wednesday, when new stock is supposed to arrive. If I can spread these things out a bit, I'm sure they'll come out better.

Lowes has a tote that is heavy and black but about 5 gal. I look at american agritech stuff and hydrofarms stuff, the reservoirs and containers are really hight impact, but high dollar too. I found a nice flood and drain 5-6 gal, easy for me to change and move around, Very durable, easy to clean. I use it for overfill or when I need another small unit for a while. (like if I am isolating some plants or thinning out forests or growing new plants whatever...) That was at the nearest HP store 200 miles away!
SInce I'm not too good with the "building " part some premade stuff is just easier for me.
Hey but I am a good improvisationist!!
You seem pretty handy. Hope you find what you need.. Try Lowes

Yeah, I went there. I have an 18 gallon res right now. I'm not worried about the capacity of it, just the dimensions. Need to get a longer, wider one to give the plants some space and get some additional light penetration. The cfls have helped alot, but I believe I can get more yield if I can get more of the HID lighting down low.

I agree just wait and go back until you get the one you wanted because im pretty sure you already had plans and dimensions made up or tought about and helps the process go much faster lol. and i also agree with the down low hid do it man!

Day 40 or thereabouts...

Morning all. Though I'd toss up a couple pictures of my girls. Batteries gave out after these 5 so I'll let 'em charge up and post some more later on.

Things are clipping right along with no real problems or concerns today. I'll be heading back to Home Depot tomorrow to buy my girls a new home, they'll just have to get along in the close quarters til then...lol.

I'll be posting more later today. In the meantime let's all join together and congratulate his exalted, grand imperial poobah, L8nightskunk, on being voted Member of the Month...good work brother, and try not to forget us peons!

Hell yeah, Southern....looks like that nute burn was caught in time. Your plants have responded quite nicely, given the short time it's been.

Yeah man, I don't play...I quit school 'cause of recess!!!

Man I crack myself up...gonna let em soak at 1100ppm til thursday morning then I'm gonna ramp it back up.

Well good morning from the midst of an Autoflowering jungle. Just wanted to throw out a quick update. I think my girls are a bunch of drunks...they just keep drinking and drinking and drinking. And not just water...they are slurping up nutes like they are starved or somthing. It's given me somthing to think on.

Quick question for the experts here...how much water uptake a day are you dealing with? I have learned that nute uptake is a widely variable thing...some days they are hungry...some days they aren't...but water uptake has gone up dramaticall the last 3-4 days, not worried, just curious.

Also, being inside 30 days to harvest, I'm starting to think about drying/curing. Now bear with me for a minute, I want to explain the method I used for my outdoor plants, a method noone seems to use for hydroponic growing, and I'm curious as to the reason.

First, we pulled the whole plant, and then cut the base of the stalk where it met up with the root ball.

Next, I hung the plants upside down for 3-5 days, depending on the rate at which they were drying. An old school grower taught me to do this for two reasons. One, a certain amount of thc would migrate down into the buds. Second, it would actually help to shape the buds. Being a bit hardheaded, I tried a side by side with identical plants, and found out that he was right...there was a noticable difference in the potency/shape of the buds.

Next came the trimming of the "sucker leaf" a local term I know, but I'm sure you understand. After this the plants would hang for anther 2-3 days or until the cut base of the stalk started to split or crack...when that happened it was time to cut the buds.

Buds were then cured in paper bags for 10-14 days, being dumped out twice a day for about 30 mins each time and then were placed back into new paper bags.

Following this, buds were placed into large mason jars to complete curing...jars were opened daily for a few minutes and buds were dumped and then re-jarred. curing took 30-45 days for most of the wet weight to finally come off.

What I'm seeing with most of the hydro grows is straight removal and manicure of the bud...followed by hanging until the branches "snap" when bent...then into jars.

Just curious about whether or not to stick with what I know, or to do what I'm seeing others do...any opinions welcome.

SouthernWeed the reason why I dry that way.:ganjamon:

Roots are easy in a soil system to remove from soil. Have you tried to get the roots to separate from the net cup and the hydroton. With soil you can bang the dirt out in hydro you end up with a wet mass of roots longer than the plant.
Most of the time I have to cut off the roots to free them from the net cup.:ganjamon:
Triming I like to trim fresh leaves because I use it for Hash and fresh leaves freeze better and make better hash than dried leaves do.

I hope that helps.:smokin2:

Pan4

It does help Pan...

Believe it or not this harvest will be the first I've tried to make any hash from, although with the size of the crop, I don't expect much of a return...more like practice for the big crops to come.

Thanks brother, your help and advice has been invaluable!
