1st Grow: Blue Dream

I will preface this with the note that I am a person that obsesses about performance metrics in life. I could never be a baseball coach. I work in an industry where your worth is determined by certain ratios at the end of the year....so that being said.....

Is the gram/watt metric applied to grows? individual plants? or some other period.

I have thought about g/w for a bit, it makes sense as a metric if your doing a 'grow' of a set number of plants in a space over a period of time. But for those of use who sprout and move stuff constantly in and out of the tent growing a number of single plant varieties...it's kinda a false metric....If your running 500w and grow one auto that is 20 grams but have 5 other plants under the light at the same time....well.

I have not broke a gram/watt yet on a plant basis. Doubt I will in this tent. But I don't count all the larf and trim, I only count jarred bud.

For example, I have three plants in a tent all due at different times. Do I expect a gram/watt from each plant, or the tent? Since the plants are harvested at different time periods it does not make sense to measure in terms of power as that is a function of time (watt)?

So, if I get on
day x 125g +80g of larf and trim from plant one.
day y 25g + 10g trim from a spog auto.
day z 55g + 10g trim from a very compact photo.

all under 200w over a period of 3 weeks during harvest.
I personally would not consider that a g/watt.

What I am getting at, is that this metric is great and all, but for those shifting plants of different ages in and out of a small square footage tent, it's kinda a wonky metric.

I prefer the metric of - can someone smoke your grow and look at you and say, "screw retail"

and its fun to look at quantity, but obsess about quality
I would think with the moving of plants like you spoke of that a g/day would be more beneficial. I see some lights advertise a certain g/w. I would assume their measurements are with high yielding plants in optimal conditions as well. But with this grow, with the same strain grown under the same light from start to finish I could see it being useful.

nice pull for a first grow MM...:thumb::high-five:...admittedly, I like to see yield #'s...I set early goals for myself based on research and results from others...I've bested and have fallen short on expectations, but the focus is always on quality...biggest problem for me, as a lightweight, is WTF am I gonna' do with all of this......cheerz...h00k...:rollit::passitleft:....

Me too! I was just telling Shed earlier how much of a lightweight I am. Lol. It will last me a bit for sure. I think I’ll set the goal for this new grow for 10 oz. I do t know what the max I can get from a space this size but I plan on finding out!:surf:
I’m definitely happy with these numbers!

Congrats brother! That's very good and even more as it s your first grow! I m happy to see those nice numbers for the short plants you had! It just means how much you nailed it! You can be proud! Congratulations again on that grow my friend!

I heard stank is hitting 2 lbs in a 4x4 lol

Duggan also I believe. Mine is just 2x4....plus they probably have me on height. Lol I’ll just keep upping my goal.

That means a lot Flash! Thank you!

I am a big time metric person as well so I want to say this. Make sure you know what you want to measure and why.

Grams per watt is one measurement but what I don't like about it is that it doesn't include time. For instance, I can veg 4 plants for 3 months and harvest it, get 800 grams out of 600 watts and have a nice average of 1.33 grams per watt. Great right? How does that compare against a crop grown and vegged for 50 days instead of 90 and yields 600 grams. That one is only 1 gram per watt. Time has to be a factor.

The issue with measurement people is that they need to ensure they are measuring the right thing. Show me how I am measured and I will show you how I perform. If I am measuring Grams per Watt, what stops you from vegging incredibly long periods for larger plants, specifically to measure well on your metrix. The reality is that Grams per Watt doesn't paint the whole picture. I used to measure Grams per Watt, actually still do.....but I do it in conjunction with other metrix over time.

I stole Grams per day from Graytail. Gives me an indicator of the performance of the plant. My highest yielder was a Northern Lights that I vegged for 70 days and flowered for 65 and came in over 3 grams per day. Most of my other plants are closer to the 1.4-1.6 grams per day. I also like to track grams per gallon of soil as well.....kind of gives me an idea of what size pot used in conjunction with how long I let them go, gives me the best yield over that said time.

For me, efficiency is how well I use my space and time to produce the most of the best produce I can. Its not just about grams per watt. Its a combo of grams per watt and grams per day and grams per gallon. I figure over a couple years, I will know what strains grow best in what size pot, for what amount of time.....FOR MY setup. Each person's will be different based on their individual growing environments (RH, temps, lights, medium, etc). What works for me, won't work for everyone.

Not quite but within an ounce of it. Hopefully this next round I will be over it....though I will be switching to a 10'x10 here in the next 2 months or so (hopefully) so I will be growing em a bit bigger in there perhaps. Maybe grow more of em in 15 gallon pots now for bigger yield.

As you should be brother!! those are fantastic numbers for any grow, let alone your first grow! :bravo:
Thanks Van! I’m shooting for 10oz off these next 2.

Grams / day of flower with static on the lights makes the most sense to me.

Regardless, goo that is a hell of a haul, you could open a dispensary....lol.

Gotta use what ever works for you. I try to look at it from the 12 plants I can grow. I have 365 days of possible production from 12 plants. Veg has to be a part of the equation for me as I can only flower a max of 6 at a time. Now space plays a big part of peoples growing style and its the main reason for my perpetual and the way I try to run it. I want to know what I am producing per day per plant, including the veg time. Allows me to track what I am producing vs what our medicinal needs are. I can tell you that with my 12 slots, we are averaging 18 grams per day (1.5 Grams per plant x 12) of production. I need to produce about 8+ grams a day to meet our current flower, oil, and topical requirements. Everything else is stuff I can give to others or experiment with cobs or other things.

It also allows me to track those same numbers when I make changes to a batch of soil and I can balance any changes in production (positive or negative) vs an improvement/drop in potency or smoothness or flavor and figure if it was worth while or not.

My measurement is more of one that measure my ability to manage all the factors than any single component of it. What can I do with what I have and how can I make it better. Over time I will my sweet spot with the soil, the rain water, my environment and my growing skillz (manipulation of all those things).
