100% Virgin Grower

so yea...i thought I was gonna be spending about $100 for lighting...now its looking like $400. cant put a price on happiness right!

O, my roomie just got home and had a gift for me: some seeds!!! lol, like I said earlier I havent been able to find seeded buds in over a year! Like my fellow newbies, I am going to run a trial with these 6 bagseeds while I am waiting for my top44 seeds to get here.

So how should I germ? I didnt get an answer earlier as to if I can just germ them in the same container they will flower in???

If theres any question as to if it will hurt them, then I will germ in solo cups with vermiculite and soil mix. Would this be ideal?

I like to use the paper towel method to germ. You just have to watch them closely. I also like to use Solo cups. I find that it's better for root development to do it this way.

Thanks Ms. Foxxy I decided to go with your towel method. I have them two to a bag with the seal open. its nice and warm here so I have them in my attic. PLEASE tell me if I am doing something wrong!!! Thanks to all of the help so far and continued input!

Re: 100% Virgin Grower- Day 2

UPDATE: Checked on the seeds first thing this morning....no activity as of yet. Im not going to be able to order the MH system until tomorrow so Ill get that delivered fastest way possible. I decided to go with the 400 watt enclosed MH system. Its going to put me back about $190 after tax and shipping. I see that as a great deal, especially with a 5 year warranty.

I read that germing 6 seeds is usually what people will do in order to insure that they have at least one female out of the batch, so I have high hopes. On the other hand, I wont be too discouraged if I muck this grow and have to start over.

Im also going by the nursery today to see what I can get!

Today is a beautiful day. :peace:

Should I create a mixture of FF Ocean Forest and Vermiculite or Perlite? Or neither? :bongrip: :reading420magazine:

Re: 100% Virgin Grower- Day 3

Thanks Myzz, I think CFL's might be perfect for the grow Im trying to do. Thanks for the reference and suggestion!

GOOD NEWS: I germed the 6 bagseeds, and I woke up this morning and 5 of them have popped. Now I am going to make my decision on veg lights and get this thing poppin. :ganjamon:

The T-5s can get you through the whole grow with changing the bulbs when you go to flower. You mentioned a rubbermaid container as a grow room, that thing will melt with the 400 watt hid light to close.

Roughneck bin will not melt. Your supposed to have them a few feet if your going to use a HID light. I plan on germinating some seeds from the reg bud I get off people to get my germination skills up to par. The grow container should be the rubbermaid bin not the grow room. And NP on the CFL reference. Need to plan good before you start wasting money on seeds if you buy them eventually.

Hey Myzz, I read back through roseman's tutorial, and I decided to go with CFLs. Im gonna get 4-42w Spiral CFL's (red and blue colors, 4 of each) and pop those in clamp reflectors. Im going to use the cool bulbs for vegging, then move to the warm bulbs for flowering, but change to a combination of the two for the last couple weeks of flowering.

Thanks for your joining us OilField! I have decided to clamp the CFLs to the top of my rubbermaid container, which is 4ft. long, 2.5ft. wide, and 3ft. tall. This is enough room for me to veg my sprouts in. I really want to do a SOG grow, but Ive also recently been enjoying seeing other grows done using LST. I should be able to keep these bulbs 2 or 3 inches away from the tops of the plants without burning them OR the rubbermaid. I think your right OilField, it would be a different story if i were using HID.

Anyways, I am preparing to construct a larger grow box with a seperate veg chamber as well as a carbon filter chamber, but in the meantime I really dont think that using this rubbermaid will be a problem. Ive followed some journals that actually had great success in a rubbermaid...I wish I could reference who did the grow but I can't remember. Anyways, their grow is what inspired me to use a rubbermaid with mylar. By the end of the grow the top cola was a good six inches poking out of the top of the box, but by that time i think I should have something figured out.

And remember guys, this is MY FIRST GROW and it is BAGSEED, so Im really not stressing real hard. I am aiming for success, but this grow is mainly for learning. As always, you guys are the BEST!! :thanks: for everything!

Another Update:

I bought two t5 strips but it says I need a 120 volt 60hz power source. What is that? I thought I was going to be able to plug these into an outlet but I have to wire them to a power source. HELP!!!

I got my germed seeds in SOLO cups with vermiculite and FF Ocean Forest. Their outside in the sun until I can get this light situation figured out...so I need to have this figured out by the time the sun goes down!!

No, it has a black wire, a white wire, and a green wire (the grounding wire). Any ideas?

Thanks OilFieldTrash, Ill do that. In the meantime I have 4 CFLs in two clamp reflectors with y-adaptors pushing 6400 lumens for the seedlings. I have these in the rubbermaid container with the reflectors clampt to the top (mylar as well). The seedlings are in solo cups on top of a shoe box to put them about 3 1/2 inches away from the bulbs. I spent $31 for this setup and I think it should be sufficient until I wire the t5's in. Any suggestions or opinions?

How many watts is your T5? It sounds like you have a logical way for this grow. I will be checking back in. Also I am going to use some official reg seeds or bagseed as well to get germination and prepping for veg growth down pat before i start ordering the good seeds :):Rasta:

You will want HPS for Flower and MH for Veg. You can get a switchable ballast that will be able to run both types. The problem with the HPS/MH is it will be greater than you $185 limit. As for LED's I have read that the yield is lower, and there is a longer flowering period.
I just bought a new 400 lumitek hps/mh dimmable ballast with a nice wing type reflector, for 180. if you want a air cooled reflector, then you're talking more.
