Xlr8's Quest For The Best - 2012

You just use the T5's for vegging? How big do you think they would get with two months of vegging under those?

Nice grow, btw. Very frosty buds.

Shoot, I lost a long reply to this somehow...

T5's work great for vegging, and they are my preferred lighting for early veg especially. I can't answer your question very well as far as how big they'd get after 2 months, because I tend to constantly trim or shape them during that time. But, they'd mature nicely in that time if all else is good (environmental conditions, etc.). I use them for seedlings, young plants, and small moms that I keep. Metal Halide (MH) bulbs work great for veg, too, but a lot of younger seedlings or fresh cuttings will find the intensity a bit much at the beginning, and it can stall them if you're not careful. With T5's, you can get the plant right up to the bulb most of the time as heat is very minimal. CFL's work great for vegging too.

Thanks for the props on the grow! :thankyou:

Hey X ....Glad to hear you say that about the T5's ....I've been using 8-bulb T5's for veg., for over a year now, and am happy with the results. I Agree the plants can go right up to the light (few inches away) and it seems to keep the plants from getting to tall and lanky.
I started using them and dropped my electric bill in half. It has been a bit of a pain but I run my Big Boy Flowering 1,000 watt-ers at night (off peak hours) and cut the bill in half again.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Clayhead. I let them grow within an inch of the T5's. Sometimes I come in and the leaves are touching the bulbs, lol. Not ideal, but it rarely seems to do more than cause a little brown spot on the leaf. Definitely energy efficient, and the plants absolutely love the light energy they get from T5's. :)

i defo love my 4 foot 5 bulb t5 light its a perfect fit in my short tent 4x2x5 the growth seems just perfect and last run i did a scrog and used the t5 for the first month of flower the over to the 400watt hps and it worked out really well, better than the 400w mh i think the even light spread lights up more surface area than the mh, i noticed shadows were more diffused and the plants seemed to bush out and lean less since its not just one small point of light, and i think they get more light and lumens being that you can nearly lay the light on top of them, , yup suffice to say t5 comes highly recommended from me i love mine, i know some sog & scrog growers use them from seed to harvest with great results switching from 6500k to 2700k spectrum for flower i hve contmplated getting some 2700s and trying that, only time will tell :thumb:

Heya X! Missed you man, thanks for popping in to check on me...means alot. I have a whole new setup now and hitting harvest early to mid next week! Looks great hope you are well!

Shizzy

Thanks for everything X!
You're an inspiration to us all!

:high-five:

Hey Xlr8 !

Just had a quick question seeing you get such amazing results with BPN;

I may possibly soon be adding a second grow room to my setup and am very tempted to order BPN nutes once it gets populated!

--Do you run m(any?) other additives in your nutrient regime ? Trying to work out costs and efficiency and just wanted to see what supplemental products you use. Also, if you dont mind me asking, do you adhere strictly to the nutrient chart on their website or do you start off at 1/4 etc ?

Thanks - and loving your journal as always !

Hi AlphaPrime - I use all of the products in the "High Yield" package from BPN, plus Cal/Mag for my RO filtered water. The only other additives I use are Silica (Pro-Tekt, but there are many other good brands, too), and "Zone" root zone conditioner by Dutch Master.

As far as amounts, i tend to use slightly less than recommended amounts most of the time, but I also adjust as I see how the plants respond, both up and down. Important caveat: What works for me, might not work for others - as grow style, environment and genetics can all impact proper nutrient strength to a fair degree.

Okay, generally speaking this is what I do: I typically start at 1/4 strength once a seedling has 3 sets of true leaves. Until then, the Rapid Rooters I use provide sufficient nutrition. With a clone/cutting I start a bit higher depending on how developed the roots are. Clones can usually be bumped up pretty quickly compared to seedlings. I build up to about 80% strength and adjust up or down from there, lately I consider adjusting just 1 or 2 of the "3-part" bottles depending on reading the plants, but that takes developing an eye for what the plants tell you (color of leaves, shine, whether they curl up or down, twist, show deficiencies, etc.) I use additives at recommended strength though I adjust Cal/Mag based on stage of grow somewhat.

One thing I did a little different this time is i cut the "Grow" part of the 3-part down to half 2 weeks prior to flush, and cut it out completely the last week. Most (all I think) of the mineral salts in "Grow" are in the other 2-parts or Cal/Mag in amounts I felt were enough for the final ripening stage. It seemed to work out great...

For the money, you can't beat Blue Planet's line and additives. For the quality you get, the prices are outstanding, especially if you live in U.S. (even with shipping). I've been lucky to win a bunch of it, but I liked it enough that I've bought more of it, too. I've used other lines, as well, and I am thrilled with BPN. Best part? The owner is extremely helpful if you have questions or issues and he is very knowledgeable regarding plant nutrition. He often participates in journals here, and has saved many peoples grows with good, timely advice. You can't go wrong.

Good questioin - thanks for commenting in my journal and the kind words. If you get time, check out my current journal (this one has completed though has had some activity recently). :)

Thanks for the detailed explanation - always nice to learn something =)

Hopefulyl by the time im ready for my next batch I will have some money saved up to try out the BPN range... Spent too much money (damn marketing lol!) on the Advanced Nutes range and cant justify buying more until its all used up - so maybe il get ready for BPN in about 5 or 6 months :)

Will follow on your current grow also !

Congratulations for your new status, xlr8 !!! It's not nessesary to refer that you earned that , by teaching people how to grow my friend !
A generous helper to every single grower, advanced or not ....
Thank you personally , for this !!

Life is getting very busy here, no time for browsing lately ... :(
I just got 2 more DS 300's panels 2-3 weeks ago , so I got 4 now in total. (1200w :yahoo:)
Unfortunately , as I had told you , I also got flo n gro system couple of months ago and that was a HUGE mistake my friend !!
Despite that, I'm trying to recover from that hit and get a god damned new f%#**g European system !!!
I feel so bad about this huge mistake of mine! ( due to not excessive research ) I'm ashamed ...

I Wish you luck to your new duties my friend , I'm sure you ll do great job
