Hey everyone -

I've been keeping items that I find particularly useful/helpful in my blog section for a while now. Trouble is, not nearly as many people use blogs or look there for information it seems. So, after some thought, I've decided to post some of the topics in the forums for further discussion and greater visibility. I'll post links here afterwards, but I thought I'd try to get some of this info out there a bit more. I'm not going to journal forever, but I enjoy trying to share some of the things I've learned or picked up with others and discussing it - so this might be another way to do that. Now, and in the future.

On that note - here's the first post. It's regarding selectively pollinating a bud or branch on your plant to make seeds (your own cross!):

I love the lighting plan! I can't wait to see how it goes. I think it contains every element that's supposed to enhance bud quality.
I'm wondering, have you finished with MH before? or is this a first time too along with the MH/HPS combo through bloom?
Happy New Year X and congrats on a well deserved NOTM.

Hi iSmokes - Thanks!

In the past, I've use all MH for veg stage, and all HPS for bloom phase (with the exception of first 2 weeks of bloom, I still use MH until week 3 of bloom). I'm wanting to see what I think of having some MH during the bloom phase. :)

Finally got around to testing out the new USB scope I got from Mrs. Clause.

These are just pics of random nugs from the bottom of our stash jars. The Super Lemon Haze and Chocolope nugs are from a couple of grows ago already. Still, thought these were pretty cool and I love my new toy!

Great shots....I like mine too...helped me find my pests and identify them AND checking trichs:3

Speaking of PAR values... the modern school of thought suggests that lumens are "for humans" and not indicative of a lamp's ability to grow plants well. Instead "PAR" is measured, which is meant to be a measure of "Photosynthetically Active Radiation" or how much of the light is able to be utilized by the plant. The Sunmaster bulb has a very high PAR value compared to other grow bulbs, even though it's pushing fewer lumens than a good HPS bulb. Also, this bulb has a warmer Kelvin rating than most other MH bulbs, at around 3,000k. Will be interesting to observe the effect on the plants.

Even if MH can help you equal the results that you shared above, I still think it's more about your grower's skills and your attention to details. Good lights are good yada yada. Simple hydro systems are simple, no? Fans blow air but a grower's got to care. Put the package together and attend it like you do. I don't recall ever seeing such thick dense trichomes. Is 'better' even possible?
Aside from my hot air, your densely encrusted nuggage grew under HID, old school. Your attention to lighting XLR8, is not going un-noted. I love the twin 400s, rather than a solid 600 or even a tricked-out honkin K watter for cooling, and get that authentic kiln effect control.

Thanks Chronic, I love this thing. There are only a few different USB scopes out there. There's one on @mazon similar to mine: try searching for "20x - 800x digital microscope". But, I think they all produce similar images regardless.

Why thanks Gator!

I like the twin 400's and the reflectors I use seem to make the most of the light in my limited space without crazy heat. I've been bumming today that I didn't go with the Horti "Blue" for my MH. That thing has a crazy awesome spectrum, (and a price tag to match). But I like the Sunmaster, and it boasts the highest PAR value, though Hortilux doesn't publish theirs. The "Blue" may be my next bulb.

Lately, I'm intrigued by Induction lighting. I'd really like to see a good induction light grow. I stuck my fingers right on a 400w induction bulb with no discomfort today at the hydro store, and they make some pretty impressive claims for these. I believe 400w induction is supposed to compare to 600w (or more) HID without the HID heat and a better spectrum (and about a 20 year effective life on the bulb or something crazy like that). But, I can't afford a change and I'd need some greater confidence that it performs like HID. I haven't seen that proof yet, but have just started looking so... who knows. I'd have to think if they were that great, more people would run them, right?

Them pictures are cool, what sort of microscope is that? Might have to invest in one of them.
