Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures & Photos From The Garden - 2012

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

We are looking at getting a vap. It's my wifes prefered method
Always enjoy chatting with you X :)

Hi Alaskan1!

Feeling is mutual my friend. I almost don't enjoy "smoking" it anymore. I so prefer the vaporizer, that I could never go back now. It's got to be better for your health, too. I like my Silver Surfer quite a bit - but there are a lot of good brands now.

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

I'd be hard pressed to give up the smoke, as I am so used to it. It's the only thing I smoke anymore as well. There is a certain relaxation just from the experience. I miss this from cigars and pipes, years ago.

I'm sure it's all in my head.... :thedoubletake:

as I stuff another bud into a bowl.. :bongrip:

No worries, we understand.. appreciate the updates and comments

Thanks Smokz! :thumb:

I can understand that. I was never a smoker anyway (cigs) so I probably have an easier time letting the bong go - (what I use when I smoke bud). I still break out the bong once in a while, but less and less.

Think I'll stuff a bud into my vape whip, and join you! :bong:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Update, continued:

The flowering plants (Deadhead OG, Jack the Ripper, and OG Kush are getting a flush at the moment. Not sure if I'll harvest them all at the same time - might just take the Deadhead for now and let the others go longer. I'll decide in the next few days. Saturday will be the completion of 9 weeks in the bloom phase.

I can't seem to quit playing with clones. These are some I took as back ups to the ones that I plan on for next round. Most of these are just now showing roots through the cubes - not sure if I'll keep any of these or not, but good insurance?

This is the Chocolope that I sprouted when I explained how I germinate seedlings - pic taken yesterday. Today I topped this plant above the second (maybe 3rd?) true node and put the cutting in a rapid rooter with the rest of the clones in the humidity dome. Chocolope prior to topping:

I should try a vape sometime though, ya never know if you don't give it a shot..
Have to ask around and see if anyone I know has one.

I have a small water pipe I have used for over 30 years, sweet little tool. Fits in your hand, holds about 4-6 oz of water. Still like my papers though. Blunts are OK but I'd prefer my smoke straight up thank you.

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

...
This is just what I do: I start my seeds in rapid rooters, which contain a small amount of micronutrients and seedlings/clones love them. I use un PH balanced, RO water to water the seedlings, nothing else, until they have their 3rd true set of leaves or the cotyledon leaves start to yellow. Then, I start with a mild nutrient solution at about 300ppms or so, and ramp up from there.

Maybe it would be different with rockwool or something else, but I don't typically need to feed them anything until the 3rd set of leaves are fairly developed. I used to feed them earlier, but sometimes would burn them. I haven't burned a seedling since I started my current germination/seedling method. But, a weak solution is probably okay earlier. Again, just what works for me. More than one way to skin a cat!

Hey, I don't remember if you're using BPN or not, but the Seedling schedule at (2.5 all) is only 190ppm (calculated on the website)
Blue Planet Nutrients PPM Calculator

N . . . . P . . . K . . . . S . . . Mg . . . Ca . . Fe . .Mn . .Mo . Zn . Cu . . B . ppm
46.70 18.57 60.75 17.05 12.92 33.25 0.78 0.17 0.01 0.10 0.05 0.07
Total ppm:190

Pretty weak, and it was engineered that way. I use it by that schedule right when I see roots for one week, then go straight to Crazy Growth for all my clones. I haven't seen any burning at all - seems to be VERY balanced.

Couldn't do that with Jungle Juice, but BPN Elite 3-part is quite easy and forgiving.

On clones, I ramp it up pretty quick too, but on seedlings I'm just saying it shouldn't be necessary until 3rd set of leaves - at least in rapid rooters (this has been my experience). I've fed them earlier than that, but I've been slower on feeding them more recently and have had healthier seedlings since doing that too. I think the real answer is: when the cotlydons start to yellow indicating they are hungry and needing the energy, then feed light solution.

But, I don't think anyone should worry about feeding them as/when you suggested at a light level like that - and assuming RO water or low PPM water.

I'm just saying this is what's worked well for me with my germination media, etc. Seedlings have crazy stored energy and can sustain themselves well for a while (at least in rapid rooters - I'm not sure about other media).

For me, it's a health thing, too. I have enough issues with my health, need to do what I can to take care of the rest of myself. I highly recommend giving it a shot sometime. :cheertwo:

Too true, my friend, and well put. The cotyledons are literally the stored energy from the mom, and they serve no other purpose than to feed the developing plant. More to the point, they actually have very little chloroplasts when comparing them to that of the other leaves that form after them.

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Glad to see you X :high-five:

You know me I was beginning to worry! :high-five:

Aw man, thank you! I'm appreciative of your concern. I'm doing okay, but being so busy lately has worn me out, too. I'm off to bed soon again, as a matter of fact. I just can't seem to get caught up anywhere here lately, and I'm pooping out early. I also have come to grips with having pretty bad insomnia, and I'm trying to work on it by going to bed a bit earlier.

Sorry everyone for being so MIA in other journals, but it's been all I can do to keep up with my own lately. I can't wait to see what everyone's up to!

I'll be busy having my mind blown by the crazy cool new changes to the site!

I'm loving it so far - cool fun little changes if you look hard enough.

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

4/20 update -- Just shy of 9 weeks bloom for the flowering plants

Flushed the flowering plants for two days, but they aren't ready enough I don't think. Plan B, will take effect, and I'm adding another 4-5 days to things. I use Clearex to flush, and switched it each day - got it down to 80ppm pretty quickly. OG Kush noticed it right away - leaves just went yellow fast!

I came to the realization that I had a stoner moment when I put my system together. I had intended to buy 2 new bulbs, but put 2 of my old ones in to get going (who needs new bulbs for early veg). NEVER DID IT. I started pondering ways to improve my next crop, and the thought of "how old are my bulbs now...?" came to my mind. That's when it hit me that I never ended up getting the new bulbs. DOH! One of them has maybe 1 year use - but the other might be close to 2! Yikes. So, there's one great way (expensive though) to improve the next crop. Had to beg/borrow/shuck/jive/prostitute myself to come up with the $$$ but I got 2 new bulbs for next round.

Speaking of bulbs -- I really studied up on them these past few days, and the Hortilux EYE Super HPS still seems like the one to get, at least in 400w. They updated them in the past year or two to work better with "digital" ballasts and from what I can discern it is still the one to get.

I did learn a few other things - these are just opinions based on my research gathering. A friend of mine works at a hydro store in the returns dept, and he said they get buried in Digiluxe returns, saying they are probably the least reliable item they carry. I was strongly considering either Ushio or Digiluxe to try something different (So far I've only used Hortilux HPS), so I found that interesting. Granted, second hand info - but he shoots me straight. He suggested trying the $19.95 UltraSun bulbs, and replace them every 3 months, still saving money over the Hortiluxe (if replaced in a year). Thought that was an interesting approach, but I finally caved and shelled out for the Horti's
.
;)

I had an opportunity to take some pics this morning, and went with it. The OG Kush looks interesting - the fan leaves are yellowing out, and just starting to purple a bit at the same time, creating interesting colors (tough to see the purple in some of the pics for some reason):

Last but not least, the Jack the Ripper plant - she grows her buds in such a way that they look like they're foxtailing, but I think that's really common with JTR - many of the pics I see of it look this way. This plant has a lot of Sativa traits. Some of the places she buds, her buds stack up single file like beads on a stick. She just keeps building new buds all the time, and then a few days later they're frosty like the rest, and there's new budding starting on top of that. Combine that with the wicked side-branching, buds on the leaves, extra leaf blades, short bushy stature and this is one unique plant compared to others I've grown. Smells like cherry gummy worms to me for some reason, but I LOVE it. I purposely fondle her for the smell, true story!

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Hey, what about the Ushio bulbs? They have a higher lumens output that the Horti don't they?

Also, how the hell did you get your pics uploaded? I can't get it to work in the new site format.
