When do you perform major defoliation?

I train/top my plants, so the main cola isn't the main one or is nonexistent. I just go by the moon calendar and defoliate on mowing days. Having no fan leaves will force the rest of the stem to develop but you need to find balance as overpruning will be detrimental.

I didnt do it last time but i had my crop with buds as big and heavy like softballs mold. this time same strain, but i stripped those girls down . not gonna have that happen again.
