Hello everybody! We have some awesome news that we would love to share. We were contacted by Neil (LEDRF) from Black Diamond LED to do a sponsored grow for his new light, the Perfect Sun COB. We will be doing a complete grow from start to finish to test to put this light to the test. We were told that we don't have to start a new journal for this grow but I may do it to keep a dedicated log of the grow. Everything that would be posted there will be posted here.
Perfect Sun LED - Perfect Sun COB
New Perfect Sun COB gets 2 to 2.8 pounds 675w -- $995 - YouTube
Today we will go over the unboxing, specs, and setup of the light.
The outside of the box literally had no markings on it other than the shipping label. Stealth shipping is a desirable trait with our hobby. Inside the box there is plenty of foam padding for protection and everything arrived safe and sound with no damage. Removing the foam we are greeted with the light.
On the side we look most forward to we find a total of 102 LEDs. 6 - Cree CXA2530 COBs and 96 - Bridgelux 5W LEDs. The COBs have 120 degree lenses permanently affixed to the light.
Before we get the to the install portion, let's take a look at the specs.
The numbers show that it has great coverage in a 4x4. I like the fact that the spectrum report and the PAR coverage sheets were sent with the light and I wish more companies did that. It goes to show that he they have nothing to hide. We don't have a PAR meter as of yet and we will test it when we do get one. Looking at the hanging heights, the higher you can hang it above the plants the better. The "hot spot" in the center diminishes and light at the edges increase.
Now lets take a look at this light shall we? Hanging it was a breeze since it only weighs 21 lbs.
It has 2 switches on the side of the panel to allow the light to be run at half power, retain the coverage, and the full spectrum. I noticed that the switches favor the red spectrum and the blue spectrum. Basically veg and bloom switches, but not labeled as such.
We currently have the light 30" above the top of the plants. I raised it after I took this picture but I wanted to get a bud shot in there.
Just to make sure the light is centered into the tent I got out the LUX meter.
For everyone that is concerned about heat created by the light, it really isn't much. After a few hours it only raised the temp 6 degrees over ambient temperature. 6" exhaust running at 75%.
That about sums it up so far about the light and I will be sharing more information as it happens. First impressions are quite positive. The light is well built and I think the it will perform as claimed. Current claims are 2 lbs - 2.8 lbs per light with 4x4 core coverage. That would be 1.4+ GPW. So its first grow will get some heavy yielders, big pots, and a canopy full of buds. The current choices are Dinafem Deep Cheese, Dr Kripplings Red Leicester tease, and Heavyweight Dream Machine. They range from 600 - 1000 grams per square meter so it'll give it a good shot.
That is all I have right now and it is going to be a great journey ahead. Feel free to ask any questions and I will do my best to answer them.
