Weffalo's West Coast O.G. First Time Grow: Indoor, Soil, SIP, Auto

Awesome thanks again mate.

It's late here, took a while to get everything perfect but other than slightly lower humidity things are looking good, temperature is about 23-24c currently which will have to do until a heater arrives in a few days.

I'll post images of the seedlings and exact methods I used in the morning and looking forward to seeing whats next :D

Checked today and temperatures are slightly below 22c when I woke up, potentially dropping below that during the night so heater needs to come asap!

So yesterday I planted the seedlings and put them in the tent.

The pots were layered with perlite, then compost/dynomyco and ecothrive mix, then more perlite, then a layer of compost and then finally another layer of perlite and another layer of compost. Compost was mixed with 10-15% perlite to create some gaps.

Made a small dimplet and then put a sprinkle of Dynomyco just before putting the seed (taproot down) in and covering it lightly.

Plan today is to place the tray onto something to raise it slightly so the seedlings are still getting 12 DLI and lower the plants onto the tray so I can bottom feed. Not exactly sure when to water or how much so I will wait a few hours, check how damp the soil seems still and add a small amount of water to the tray to see if it all gets absorbed.

Gonna try be overcautious with watering until they go into SIP, this is the only time really during the grow that overwatering/watering might be an issue, hopefully the drainage oriented layers attempt at imitating Bill's method will work their magic and keep it well drained :bong:

@Bill284 's method is designed to use with top watering and I'm not sure how well the soil will wick the moisture up from below since the perlite layers might impeded the wicking. Not saying it will, just that a homogeneous mix seems to wick better. We haven't tested that yet to my knowledge.

On the other hand, those are small pots and the roots will find the moisture on their own so probably don't need to worry about it too much. Also, perlite itself does have some wicking properties.

You could just temporarily sit each pot in a saucer of water briefly to wet the bottom 1/2" or so rather than changing your entire setup.

Looks good. Game on! :thumb:

@Azimuth I did think that but unfortunately with my somewhat scattered research I only re-read about creating the moisture gradient memory after I had already planted :D I am hoping because the pots are quite small and my layers of perlite aren't super thick that it should still be okay lol.

Good morning my friend :ciao:
How is everything going today?

Good morning :)

Very good thank you Bill! How are you doing?

Very excited to see my first signs of plant life, trying not to check the tent every few hours at the mo. Saucers with water going under the pots in next few hours :slide:

Everything is going well thanks. :high-five:
I'm so glad your enjoying your garden.
It's such a rewarding hobby.
Very addictive though.
As you see.;)
I'm plant - less again.
I'll catch you soon though.
A little more work on the grow room.
Keep up the good work my friend. :thumb:

I've seen a few pics of the grow room, it's looking good! You've defnitely got a slice of heaven with that place by the river, I'll be sure to keep an eye on your thread and see how your getting on.

I'm already addicted so I imagine after a harvest or two it will be a full on obssession :)

Cheers for stopping by @Bill284 , be well mate!

Morning people!

Hope everyone is well :)

So I added around a half inch too an inch of water in the bottom of the saucer last night, The top soil is quite dry now and I am still waiting for any signs of life, it's only been around 1 day and 12 hours so I think it's normal not to have seen anything sprout yet.

Just not sure if I should top water it a bit so the soil doesn't dry out or leave it for now?

I guess if the water in the saucer hasn't really depleted by tonight then I should maybe consider it? What do you think?

:passitleft:

Once the seed pops and the roots are able to grow for a few days they'll find the moisture down in the soil quite quickly and then eventually the reservoir. But before they pop you need to keep the area around the seed moist to keep it from drying out.

Not super wet but moist. Assuming you planted the seed a half inch down, spritzing the top right over the seed with a sprayer to keep it moist should be all you need. Once it breaks the surface let the roots go find the water on their own.

Sunny England mate :) Will be following yours as well, I'm sure you will be getting different issues to me over in Thailand but I'm sure we can both learn something lol.

Definitely addictive, been smoking and buying it for way too long so I'm excited to try and become more self-sustaining and hopefully I can grow nicer buds than I can buy :lot-o-toke::bong:

Ahh I know the DM struggles i think I'm still a few posts short too lol, dm me when you can bro i'm not from around those ways but I think I'd prefer Thailand given the option :p

Anyone have any experience with the supplied Mars Hydro hygrometer/temp monitor?

I've bought a fancier one that has tracking/wifi so I can accurately monitor it overnight but I am getting wildy different readings lol and it's hard to say which one is at fault !

Mine used to go blank it got so hot.
But it worked accurately according to the old school dial one I have.
