Water Curing?

What the basic process? I've never heard of this method and I'm too lazy to google it. How long will you leave it in the water, and what will you do with it in the way of drying/curing after you take it out?
Submerge the bud in water. Change water out every day. In about 3 to 5 days your bud has gotten rid of anything water soluble. Hang to air dry (some use fans). Done. No need to cure after.

Pros: gets it done fast, smoothest smoke
Cons: gets rid of flavor and aroma, they say the bud has less bag appeal (they're ugly)

Most people are doing this for edibles and not smoking. So I figured I would start a thread with the process for the smokers.

Went 3 1/2 days in water. 1st water changed at 24 hours then to every 12 hours. Once pulled from the water she was hang dried. Water cure on left, air cure on right. Both buds from the same plant.

Now we're gonna give the air dried some time to cure with a side by side smoking comparison to follow.

Ok, verdict is in. Water cured bud has virtually no smell. When smoked it was smooth but the taste reminded me of what a burning tire smells like. The high is about the same as the air cured. Would not recommend for smoking.

Some of the best bud I ever smoked was old school imported sativas in the 80s. It was always brown like that. Well cured and smooth.

So I thought the water cure made it look better...

In some ways no. My favorite bud was Thai- and i grow that now and it's very similar to what I smoked from Thailand. Actually pretty much the same bud as it ever was, when you're looking at the Sativas. Some of the sativa stuff was nice and strong back then too. There wasn't much indica around then - so that has changed drastically.

This Dwarf Low Flyer bud weighed 15 grams after trimming. After drying for a day it weighs 11 grams ( 35% lighter/dryer).

I put it in about a pint (1/2 liter) of very soft water (~25 PPM) and then put it in the fridge at 37F (3C).

Next time, press the "macro" button... ;)

I understand the science, but this still seems so wrong...

Let me know if yours turns out any better on smoke flavor!

After 24 hours
The bud has swollen about 10%, making it hard to get it in and out of the jar. Otherwise it looks no different.
The look of the water is unchanged--no cloudiness or color change.
The water smells like cannabis, but not strongly.
The bud smells like cannabis--more so than the water.

I suspect that so far all that has happened is the bud has become saturated with water and that there has been only a little bit of leaching of its contents.

If the bud had dried first, if the bud had been ground, if the water was warmer, or if there was some circulation in the bottle, I suspect the process would go faster.

I changed the water and put the bottle back in the fridge.

Bud after 24 hours in 37 degree water
I'm wondering what effect using cold vs room temp water would have on leeching the buds. I did mine at room temp so I'm happy to see you using cold temps.

The obvious guess is that it would take longer in cold water. I just don't like the idea of a bacterial tea brewing on my counter top.

Yeah, good to compare notes on different approaches.

Isn't the water changed daily, and not left to brew??

I'm changing mine daily, yes. My goal is to extract the water-soluble stuff in the bud while avoiding significant bacterial/fungal/algal interaction.

Day 2 report: Same as Day 1. Water is clear and smells a little like pot. Bud is engorged with water and smells of pot.

Day 4 update
After three days in water in the fridge, the bud finally sank. That tells me that only now is it fully saturated, so I'll let soak for a total of five days with daily water changes.

In the photo, the water looks a little bit cloudy and the bud a little bit darker, but that's just condensation on the jar and lighting. It's the same bright green as the day it went in the jar and the water is crystal clear.

After soaking for three days

After a five day soak

Here is the Dwarf Low Flyer bud after its five-day bath in a jar in the refrigerator. The water it was soaking in never changed except to get a very slight cannabis aroma--no cloudiness or color change.

This bud dried for one day after harvesting and weighed 11 grams when it went in the water. Five days later, after gently shaking loose some of the water and then letting it drip dry for half an hour, it weighs 19.6 grams, an increase of 78%.

Yes, those are intact trichomes that you see there, which seem to have survived the soaking!

The bud is going to hang in front of a fan for a few days, then I guess it gets jarred at 62% humidity just like the other buds... See you then.

My Dwarf Low Flyer bud is dry again and sitting in a jam jar. I don't think it looks worse after its soak (but it wasn't exactly a High Times cover girl to begin with).

The conventionally cured buds from this grow have a slightly floral smell. This water-cured bud has a slight dried plant smell--sort of "herbacious"--but you wouldn't recognize the smell as pot in a blind sniff test.

Further testing tonight... ;)
