Vapedogg223's Got a Brand New Bag! All Organic - High Brix -Nirvana Ice- 49 Plant SOG

Re: Vapedogg223's Got a Brand New Bag! All Organic, High Brix, Nirvana Ice, 49 Plant

Subbed, great journal :) Can't wait to see them as time goes on! Very clean set up, informative, and real nice pictures. :thumb:

:thanks: I love pictures in journals! :thumb:

what do you feed your mother plants vapedogg?

They have been transitioned over to the same high Brix methods, so they are feeding off the soil, weekly EWC teas as both a foliar spray and a soil drench, and maybe a monthly shot of fish/seaweed fertilizer.

I did have some problems with the transition because of dolomite in my old soil mix...I might go into that a bit later!

subbd, looking great so far, interesting to see how sog works out,

:thanks: brother! :thumb:

I agree it all looks so good Vape n subbed. :welldone:

:thumb:

Wow dude, me likey all your moms! I always fret about my moms and end up flowering them or killin em. I think a bonsai mom journal's a great idea!
:peace::Namaste:

If you're going to keep bonsai moms you'll get over the fear of killing them very quickly! You almost have to try to kill them... I did just lose my first mother that I had run in the POTM contest a couple of times, but that was a long story I'll probably tell when not much is going on, if you folks want to hear it.

Re: Vapedogg223's Got a Brand New Bag! All Organic, High Brix, Nirvana Ice, 49 Plant

Okay, so I thought I’d share a little more about my room and environment.

The room I use was supposed to be only temporary, until my new grow room was ready…that was last year.

The new rooms are going to happen, there’s just issues that keep coming up. I’ve already had to upgrade my home’s electrical service…probably should have been done anyway, but that’s beside the point. Then it was moving gas pipes…anyway, you get the idea.

So this room has actually been gutted down to the studs. Under the panda film is just studs and the building’s sheathing. No insulation means a proper growing environment is somewhat dependent on the climate here. I can however, cope fairly well for most of the year. The dead of summer though, becomes a challenge. Having to deal with this, is one of the main reasons my new rooms will be sealed, and fully climate controlled but, I digress…

I use a Phresh 6” x 24" 550 CFM carbon filter. Room air is pulled through the filter and through a Vortex VTX600, which is a 452 CFM fan, and then pushed through my hood and exhausted into the attic for the warmer months.

Everything is suspended from the ceiling joist. Carabiners make it easy to add or remove wired devices, while keeping everything pretty neat. It also allows for easy take-up or let-off of slack in the wiring when raising or lowering fixtures and devices.
CIMG3291.jpg

CIMG3293.jpg

The fan is on a speed controller, and the heat from the lamp is used to help maintain a proper environment in the winter months. When flowering though, it will usually be on full blast, so I can keep the light as low as possible. The timer is there for the colder months as well, once things start warming up and the ladies start stinking up, the fan stays on 24/7. The panda film seals it up enough to easily maintain negative pressure in main grow area.
CIMG32951.jpg

My ballast is running at 750 Watts right now, and the hood is about 31” above the plants. I’ve singed leaves before, by going too bright, and/or too close, too quickly with new clones, so I’m going to err on the side of caution this time.
CIMG3294.jpg

I use these Acu-Rite remote thermometer/hygrometer’s for monitoring my various grow areas. They have a switch to select the radio frequency they communicate at, so you can use up to three in the same house. The fact that it displays the day’s high and low temps make it very easy to tell if I have to tweak something in the room, even if I wasn’t there when it happened.
CIMG3302.jpg

CIMG3303.jpg

I always have at least one oscillating fan running 24/7, but a second one gets added when plants start to get larger. I also have an electric heater for the additional heat that's needed when the lights are off.
CIMG33231.jpg

Lastly, I wanted to mention that a while back, I started growing genovese basil alongside my moms... I don't do this because I love fresh pesto...which I do, but I grow it because it has a wonderfully strong smell that actually masks the smell of the sticky-icky! I keep potted basil indoors, throughout the house. If there happens to be some smell from the grow, I've not had anyone that's been visiting that were able to discern the smells from the grow, instead they just comment on how strong the scent of the basil is, and how much they like it!
IMG_05688.jpg

I never let the basil flower around my ladies though... flavors and aromas of some vegetables and herbs can be effected when pollen from one species comes in contact with the flowers of a similar species. I haven't done any research to determine if that might be the case with cannabis, so I just don't let them flower...usually not a problem since it's really hard to grow flowers from inside my food processor.

Another rule of mine is that no plant enters my grow rooms, that wasn't started in my grow rooms...the same rules apply for basil. The plants I keep in the grow room are started from seed alongside the moms/cuttings.

:Namaste:

Wow, killer setup your running Vapedogg!! I really like those wireless temp gauges, I'll have to look into those!! Man I can't wait till I have a large area like that to grow in :)

How often are you spraying your foliage? once a week, or like once a day?

Keep watching! I think it will be interesting. :)

Wow Vapedogg, it looks like you have been busting your hump with great results! :thumb: Keep up the good work! :goodjob: :peace:

:thankyou: I always stress about everything at this point in my grows...it's really easy to screw up young plants at this stage, so I try to be hyper vigilant!

I can't get over how organized everything is, it's really impressive. Nice job with the enviroment control, you seem to have it down to a tee.

Thanks bro! Keeping things as orginazized as possible is the only way I can do it, and stay sane. I have things under control with the environment, but I'm usually tweaking something every day. To complicate things, we've had some crazy weather here lately. Two weeks ago it was in the high 70s and I think it hit 80 one day. Then last week, we had a night that it went down to 20°.

There's a lot of variables with my environment that I'm always dealing with, and I really can't wait until my room is run by a total environmental controller. :hugs:

looks great! man keep it coming!

Again great set up vd.
No way back for you ,cant wait to some fireworks !
Good luck

:thanks: again brother! I think the fireworks are coming...they've already doubled in height!

The wireless thermometers work great! For $19.97 at Lowes, it's was a no brainier for me!

The extra space is nice! My new flowering room will be a bit smaller, but will be set up to run two 4'x4' trays with 1K Watt lights over each one. Originally I was thinking 3K for 4'x8', but if I can make this SOG work, 2K should be fine. :thumb:

The plan is to spray them with the EWC tea once a week, with just waterings in between as needed. I did hit them with some more tea on Friday. I don't like to water them too much when I first transplant, I think it slows down the root growth...so after a couple of days, I wanted to give them a good drink, and also boost the beneficals in the soil.

I also lowered the light to about 28" the same day, but kept it running at 750W. The plants were looking good, so just this evening, I raised the light back to 31 inches, and kicked it up to 1000W.

This should just get me into the optimal range of the light... I plan to move it closer, but I want to go slow!

I use these charts as a reference.

Foot-Candle_Chart_MH.jpg

If the data in this one is accurate, I'll need to be 20" away to equal the tropical sun.

Re: Vapedogg223's Got a Brand New Bag! All Organic, High Brix, Nirvana Ice, 49 Plant

I dig the chart, I wonder how accurate they are? 12" for a 400w and 20" for a 1kw equals the tropical sun? If so It looks you will be doing fine for lumens. :peace:

Well...they were used in one of my "grow bibles", so hopefully the data was vetted before they used it.

The numbers don't seem to match what my cheap Hydrofarm light meter says I'm getting thought...but, I think I'd tend to doubt the acuracy of the light meter.

I'd love to get a better meter, and have been looking around to see what's out there...

Re: Vapedogg223's Got a Brand New Bag! All Organic, High Brix, Nirvana Ice, 49 Plant

Hope you still have room for one more.......I can't believe I missed this.
What a set up! AirPots for ever!
:high-five:

There's always room for you brother OMM! :thanks: for stopping in! :thumb:

Re: Vapedogg223's Got a Brand New Bag! All Organic, High Brix, Nirvana Ice, 49 Plant

Do you measure the temp. in shade or under the hood ?
If you measure under the hood its better to make a hood cap on your tem/hum sensor .

I'm right at the edge of the hood. It's normally kept at the height of the canopy, but right now it's at 23". You can see it pretty good here.

What do you think?

Re: Vapedogg223's Got a Brand New Bag! All Organic, High Brix, Nirvana Ice, 49 Plant

I thought I ought to do a quick update tonight since I'll be away from the garden all day tomorrow, and I'm going to be needing some advise soon from you SOGers out there!

So the light is about 28" above the tips of the plants...that's about 6400 foot-candles according to my chart, but my light meter is saying maybe 2700 at about 29".
CIMG3354.jpg

I know I shouldn't question the precision piece of measuring equipment that cost a whopping $14.99...but could it be that far off? It wasn't directly under the bulb, but If I have to measure dead-nuts under the arc of the bulb, than the chart isn't reflecting real world numbers. I think I'll withhold judgement until I get a different light meter. :)

Anyway, since the plants seem to be looking okay, I'm going to lower the hood a few more inches when I get home tomorrow.

Here's a few random plant pics:

CIMG3372.jpg

They're all around 4 inches or so high...they've doubled their height in about 5 days. So something is telling me I really need to start thinking about when to switch over to HPS and 12/12.

This is where I need some advice. I'm going to go back and look at one of 420fieds journals to see how big his are when he flowers them, but I think they were about 6". I was expecting my growth to be a little slower, since hempys grow very fast, but now I'm starting to wonder...none of the Ice clones I've grown before have taken off quite this fast.

Here's the whole SOG so you can get a better idea.
CIMG3382.jpg

CIMG3373.jpg

I've been watering them every other day, which would be tomorrow, but since I won't be back until very late I sprayed them all down just now to tide them over until then...I really don't like to let the top dry out too much with Air-Pots.

Let me hear you thoughts!

Re: Vapedogg223's Got a Brand New Bag! All Organic, High Brix, Nirvana Ice, 49 Plant

Well....it's a joy to see that many AirPots in use at once. I hear you about checking with 420fied.....he's the man for SOGs. I think his were just a bit taller, before flowering. Since your going to HPS bulbs I think you could lower those air cooled HPS just a bit closer. However, better safe than sorry.

I'll be doing a SOG very soon, so I get to learn from you. Sorry, your going to be my crash test dummy. :Namaste: I'll be doing the 2 litter soda bottles the first time, then I'll change to AirPots if things go well for me. This is exciting.:high-five:

Re: Vapedogg223's Got a Brand New Bag! All Organic, High Brix, Nirvana Ice, 49 Plant

Really up to you when you want to flip. Vegging out for another 1-2 weeks isn't a bad idea. Soil require longer veg time to bush out. Then you can make your selections on which branches to keep so they don't grow into the near by plants. I would flip when the plant's height is same as the length of the air pot.

Another idea you might want to think about is placing a screen over it and create a SOG under SCROG, triple your yield. The screen has to be high enough to reach under to water all those pots.
